This company is scamming people left and right. I originally paid $1 to get a report. The report had information of over 6 years ago. Then, it signed me up for a subscription $39.96. Said, I can only cancel by calling. I called and it was an automated system. 3 days later my account was charged $39.96. I called again and same automated system. Then, I finally spoke to an agent which told me no attempt of canceling was made. Odd, I realized the automated system was a scam. He then mention that the $39.96 is for their time and effort of processing the payment. He offered to lower the next monthly payments to $2, even though I had mention I don't use this service. They refused to give me a full refund and mention to perhaps give me $19 but weren't sure. Pissed, I call my bank and they are also refusing to dispute the charge. I then, check review and notice a big percentage of their reviews are claiming the same issue I am having. Just stealing hard earned money from people while they sit at home. This company needs to be held accountable.Business Response

Thank you for contacting us and we are sorry to learn that you had difficulties with your subscription. We see that you signed up for our monthly service with an initial 7-day trial period. After the trial, the account was active on the scheduled billing date and charged the normal monthly fee. The trial fee and monthly fee are explained during the online registration process and we require all customers to check a box that specifically agrees to these fees. We also reiterate this billing reminder in the email that welcomes new members to the service. Sorry again if this was different than you expected. After your billing date, our records indicate that you canceled your account using our automated system and then spoke with an agent. The agent re-explained everything to you and attempted to accommodate your situation by refunding half of the charge and providing a month of free service. You noted that your best option would be to contact your bank about a dispute, and it seems that your bank found no issue with the legitimacy of the transaction. Of course, we always want our members to be satisfied, and so we reached out to you to ensure your account was canceled and refunded. This company does not have an option to cancel or stop subscription without calling in. This is not a function that is available to me nor was this clearly stated when signing up for their services. This company uses bait & switch tacticsBusiness Response

I cannot provide a link, because your website required purchasing an account to get a link, but my information is clearly visible as a preview. The verification step requires additional personal information. I will not be providing additional personal information, just to remove my information, as that's contrary to the point of wanting to reduce what personal information of mine is available and sent to companies.

Better Business Bureau:Thank you for the response from Public Data Check. When I last wrote, my information was still visible online -- but I can confirm that it is now no longer available. I would have picked up the phone if I would have gotten a call from the company, but my phone shows no missed calls. However, to their credit they did call to confirm an earlier data removal request (before I submitted to BBB), which I appreciate.

On 8/7/2024 I subscribed to a 7 day trial for $2.00 to public data check. I agreed to pay that and could cancel any time after. I only needed to use it one time so I cancelled it on the same day. I successfully unsubscribed and today 8/15/2024 was charged $29.96 to my discover card. I have disputed it with credit card and reported as fraud. Not sure what you can do about this but it absolutely fraudulent, and if they do this to everyone they could criminaly make lots of money. Accounts can be canceled 24/7 online or through our automated phone system. We also offer live agent support by phone and email 7-days from 5am - 9pm PT. We do not see any record of a request to cancel your account and this is why you were charged the normal monthly fee on your scheduled billing date. We are not sure what you experienced when attempting to cancel your account and we apologize for any inconvenience. I utilized this company to find my property tax numbers while doing my taxes. The cost of report was $1. They billed me twice. I never ordered or concented to any recurring charges or subscription. Today I received a fraud alert for a 28.95 charge from publichousedata. Forcing me to cancel my card. By the number complaints I believe this to be a common practice with this company. I paid $1 online to get information on my house. I never received the information requested. I also did not know this would be a recurring charge of $28.95 a month. I have no contact with this company and do not know how to cancel this service.Business Response

We see that an account was created on our website on 2/17/24 with your name, email address, phone number, and payment information. We sent an email confirmation with relevant account details at the time the account was created. We attempted to process the monthly fee of $29.96 on your scheduled billing date but we were not able to process the payment. When this happens the system will periodically reattempt the charge during a grace period before automatically downgrading or canceling the account. Earlier this month I signed up for the $1 trial for seven days through Public Data Check. Unfortunately I did not find the information I was looking for so I went and cancelled BEFORE the seven days were up. I even received an email confirming that my trial was cancelled BEFORE my days were up and that I would still have access until that seventh day. Today doing some online banking I saw a charge that was in fact for $29 for Public Data Check! Not sure why I was charged when I cancelled before the trial had ended. In regards to this I am requesting a full refund as your site did not have the information I needed( nor was what I did see accurate) so I had no use for a membership which is why I cancelled but was charged anyways!Business Response

I think the issue here was just a misunderstanding about the timing of the trial. The account was created on the morning of 2/6 with a 7-day trial that provided access through all of 2/13. The account was still active on 2/14 and the normal monthly fee was processed. The account was then canceled online later that day and an automated email confirmation was sent to the email address on file. The email noted the most recent charge with a reminder that website access would expire on 3/16. Sorry again for any confusion and it is not our intent to charge someone who does not want to use our service. I used publicdatacheck’s website and canceled the $1 trial well before the one week trial was over. I received an email confirming the cancellation. However, the debit card used for the $1 trial was charged $29.96 a few days ago despite the cancellation. I want my money refunded and assurances that I will no longer be charged.Business Response
