I just got off the phone with a very rude agent from Clean Choice Energy. My bill this month is 535 dollars. Lyn, the agent, said a letter was sent to my house-not addressed to me, the account holder, but to my husband who’s not the primary account holder, saying that the fixed rate was ending and to give them a call to lock it back in. No letter was ever received and it wasn’t even sent to me in my name-the name on the account.
The only way she could offer me the difference in what my bill should have been with the fixed rate and the amount it is with the variable rate is if I agreed to sign on for another 2 year contract.
Is this fair? They need to be investigated for fraud.CleanChoice Energy Inc

We are disappointed to hear that you did not have an excellent clean energy experience. However, the amounts you are mentioning are more than double what we show as billing you. We will have one of our supervisors reach out to you to make another attempt to resolve the issue. We will also review your interaction with our agent. We apologize in advance that the agent came off as rude on the call.Review fromLia B

What an absolute scam — the rate increased exponentially without warning or reason. Make sure you're double-checking the "Energy Provider" line in small text at the bottom of your city/state energy company's monthly bill to make sure you accidentally didn't get signed up for CleanChoice Energy Inc. I don't even have a recollection of consenting to use their services at any point, nevermind that the cost is exponentially higher than the default kWh rate through my city's standard supplier.CleanChoice Energy Inc

Thank you for reaching out and providing this feedback. We've noted that you have been in touch with our team, and that one of our supervisors will be reaching out to work with you directly. We want to assure you that CleanChoice Energy is not a scam. We serve thousands of customers across 9 states, and CleanChoice Energy is a certified B Corporation.
Our records indicate that you enrolled via a completed form with a name, email address, account number and signature and have been a customer since November of 2020. Terms and conditions for this plan were sent by mail to the address for this account, which state that after the introductory rate the price is subject to change monthly, based on market conditions and CleanChoice Energy’s cost to provide energy supply service.
A member of our team will reach out to you soon to help resolve your concerns, and we are always here to help.Review fromElizabeth K

I was totally misled by this company. When I switched from my Eversource Company in MA, I was told by a staff person that I would pay only a few pennies more for the alternative energy sourced electricity. My bill would therefore be almost similar to my previous company's prices.
However, last month I received a bill for over $400 (much higher than the past). I discovered that CleanChoice Energy actually increases its prices frequently. So, I switched to my city's company (City of Cambridge, MA) which is local and less expensive.
To my surprise and shock, I received a new bill for $686.36 for one month! When I spoke to a CleanChoice Energy person I was told that I had switched during a cycle and had to wait until the end to make that change. I then asked for help to reduce the cost as I'm a senior citizen on fixed income; I was told that since I was no longer their customer they couldn't do that. Yet, they charged me as a customer.
I've contacted AARP and other organizations to warn people not to deal this this company that uses unfair and very burdensome practices.CleanChoice Energy Inc

I find it extremely disappointing that the only way I was actually able to speak to a representative to take me off the mailing list was to go through you automated system as if I was going to sign up. Without following those prompts and instead waiting on the line as the recording instructs, the system sends you straight to a customer survey. I also have to assume the survey is fraudulent, as I did not get those prompts when I tricked you into actually letting me speak to a human being.
I also have reason to doubt I was taken off any list, because wouldn't the representative have given me the same copy and paste disclaimer I see on all the responses here claiming that it could take up to 90 days?CleanChoice Energy Inc

You are the most evil scam, right up there with the calls I get for my extended car warranty. I am helping my brother who is on SSDI and lives in a terrible apartment in the Bronx, NYC. You originally bamboozled elderly mother in 2017 (she was 86 years old) to somehow sign up. When she passed in 2019 I ignored the requests to renew and when I just spoke to a representative from your company (Nia) and she said you just changed the plan!! My brother's bill for this month is $443 and the rep from ConEd says it should be about $50, You are disgraceful ripping people in low income areas and it's racial profiling at its worst. I will be contacting my long time attorney, Mark Tallmadge from Bressler, Amery and Ross to right this disgraceful policy of ripping people off.CleanChoice Energy Inc

I am a CleanChoice subscriber. I received a mailing recently offering a $75 rebate if I had an electric car. I took them up on the offer and in the mail received a $75 check, but the letter it was attached to did not reference an electric car rebate. Instead, it contained the language, "Please be advised that by cashing this check you agree that your complaint has been handled in a satisfactory manner." I interpret that as precluding me from participating in any class actions against CleanChoice Energy.
Their call line rep couldn't explain why this letter included that language. I repeatedly said that there was no reference to an electric car rebate I asked for another letter referencing the electric car rebate without the "...you agree that your complaint has been handled..." language and he refused.
I feel that it is unethical (at very least) to promise a rebate for one thing but make you waive other rights unrelated to the rebate in order to cash the rebate check.CleanChoice Energy Inc

We sincerely apologize for any frustration our mail may be causing and that this has taken you more than one attempt. I have confirmed that you were added to our do not contact list at the end of June. When we add customers to this list, we ask that you allow up to 90 days for this to take effect as some of our campaigns may already be in process and mail might be already on its way. Again, we apologize for this experience and we want to make it right. There was a price increase with no warning that a contract or pricing rate was ending. While I typically pay $49 for energy use in the summer, I received a $93 bill. I live in a 1-bedroom apartment and I barely use lights. They offered to lower my rate, but I find their tactics similar to cable companies in which the customer is responsible for keeping on top of their predatory rate hikes. I canceled them this morning, and I was assured there were no cancellation fees or penalties. Also, it doesn't seem like their sources are indeed derived from renewable energy. Not to mention, this company was started by political operatives in the Obama administration. You may think that's positive, but I encourage you to search for the Daily Beast article on this company that covers why that's problematic. And I'm not a Republican. Do your research. You may feel like you're doing good for the environment, but they're just robbing you of money.CleanChoice Energy Inc

Thank you for providing your feedback. We noted that you enrolled on an introductory rate plan that then transitioned to a variable rate plan, which means the price per kWh varies month to month based on the price of energy. CleanChoice Energy buys clean, renewable energy on the open market. Like any other commodity, energy prices fluctuate. We buy the most affordable, regional clean energy available to us. If the price of renewable energy goes up on the market, it will go up for our customers on variable plans. If it goes down, our customers will pay a lower price. Like many things right now, energy prices have have increased and right now we are at a time of high usage, the summer cooling season. We do not notify our customers each month of the new variable rate; however, we do offer 12 month fixed rate plans, which allows us to buy energy in advance for customers that are willing to give us thee commitment of their time. These plans allow customers to lock in a consistent rate for the time period. Customers on fixed plans are able to cancel at any time without penalty.
Our team would love to work with you to see how we can improve your experience. Please don't hesitate to contact us at 1-800-218-0113 Monday through Friday from 8 am to 8 pm and Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm EST to speak with a member of our Customer Care team.Review fromJo B

I am busy caring for a 90 year old husband, grandkids (one with autism) and others. Wanted to help the environment and this company said it is a little more but felt it is worth it. I trusted them (stupidly). My bills tripled! I read a Daily Beast article that goes into CleanChoice’s practices. Buyer beware.CleanChoice Energy Inc

Bait and Switch!
I was told that my energy cost would be on par or only slightly higher than my existing energy supplier, National Grid. Lo and behold, after the introductory rate, their variable rate is more than double that of National Grid (126% higher to be exact). To put this in financial terms, this has cost me over $400 in higher electrical bills over the last two months.CleanChoice Energy Inc

Thank you for sharing this feedback with us. When you enrolled, terms and conditions for this plan were sent by mail, which state that after the introductory rate the price is subject to change monthly, based on market conditions and CleanChoice Energy’s cost to provide energy supply service. Well, as you may have heard, there are a number of factors that have led to a rise in electricity costs, and there is currently higher demand for all sources of energy including wind and solar energy. This has led to a rise in prices for utilities and suppliers like CleanChoice Energy. We are sorry to hear that you are dissatisfied with our service. Our team would love to help make sure you have a great experience and discuss plan options with you. Hmmm... the cost of what my previous supplier, National Grid, charges has stayed basically flat over the last threw months while you have increased your rates by 45% - seems to me that you are price gouging.
As far as contacting your customer support, I have emailed them as you requested three days ago and have not heard back from them. This is on par with my previous interactions with your customer support in which supervisors were not available and, when they finally called back could not offer me anything remotely price competitive.
To anyone who reads this and still wants to move forward with CleanChoice, be prepared to pay at least 50% over the cost of regular electricity and, if you have questions, be prepared for a "mom and pop" customer service experience.
