1 starI was told over a month ago my rental was squared away. Yesterday, I was surprised to wake up and find my account overdrawn. The reason? Hertz had charged me $500 after the fact using the card they had on file. No call, no email, nothing. I already paid before and was told that I was "good to go." I have done more research into reviews and other customer experiences and it looks like this is a regular occurrence with Hertz nationwide. No wonder their business is failing. Stealing money is not a good look. They took money from someone just because they could and it was at a time where they were at their lowest. It is gross and underhanded. At least Honda and Progressive were both upfront about how terrible they were handling the situation. Hertz is a different kind of evil.Review fromRebecca P

1 starI rented a car from hertz and was asked if I wanted to prepay for gas at their rate which was lower that the going rate at the time. I agreed, gave my credit card for the deposit and this was the transaction. Upon returning the car even though I only used half a tank they charged me for a full tank and refused to "refund me for fuel" which I find amusing because they didn't use that money to fill the tank with fuel as it was already half full. No one told me that I was paying for a tank of gas, I was told the rate and assumed like other companies in the past they would just fill it and charge me the cost. Then when I reached out to customer service it took them days to get back to me and their response was "they encourage their customers to return the car with as little gas as possible". I was never told this, and I'm not sure if they wanted me to drive the car around in circles at the airport before returning it? I visited for a short trip and only used half a tank of gas, never had to fill on my trip. This is a stupid policy and it is not looking out for the best interest of their customers. I think if you have to make a statement on the recording of your customer service line regarding this issue (which there is) then there's a problem with the policy not with the customers. I will never again rent from hertz.Review fromIndia S

1 starI rented a car from Hertz at the Detroit airport in May 2022. The reservation was pre-booked through a third party. I waited in line for 30 mins to pick-up the car. When I got to the counter, the agent pulled-up my reservation and said, "For a $10 upgrade, you can grab and go." This is when they have a group of cars ready to go and you don't have to wait. Sounded good to me. I was given the Total Estimated Charge of $98.80 for the one day rental and I was on my way. BTW, the car I got was a small SUV which was what I had reserved (there was no upgrade). When I returned the car one day later (less than 24 hrs later), the tank was filled. My credit card, however, showed a charge of $537.29. When I called, I was told that I hadn't returned the car for four more days. Eventually this was corrected and I was credited back $391.43. This brought the total charges to $145.86. I call again - I'm told that there was a $49 airport charge fee. The numbers don't make sense for that. Then it was a $50 grab and go fee. No, that was only $10. I went around and around with the very nice girl on the phone, but nothing made sense. As of now, I am waiting for a supervisor to call me back. That will take 24-48 hours. Can't wait! Bottom line, I won't be using Hertz again. There "Total Estimated Charge" document is nothing of the sort - it does not include all possible charges.Review fromRaymond J

1 starHertz charged for a cleaning fee of $200.00 for smoke smell in the vehicle when the smoke smell was already in the vehicle when the vehicle was rented out. The employees Craig W******* Manager Associate fraudulently charged a $200.00 cleaning fee after consulting with and asking Charles B**** Manager Trainee and Charles B**** Manager Trainee stated that he would charge the cleaning fee so then Craig W******* Manager Associate proceeded to charge the $200.00 cleaning fee. The fraud committed by the employees should be illegal, if it is not already illegal. Also, Donna R**** Manager Associate II refused to assist.Review fromLarry W

1 starI rented a car for the Masters, a once in a life time opportunity to say the least. The vehicle broke down, it happens no ones fault, I called the road side service, they dispatched a tow truck and instructed me to go to the nearest Hertz rental to get a replacement, my wife and her friend grab a Lift to the airport, a hour away missing almost half a day of the masters, my friend and I walked the rest of the way to get to the Masters, again things like this happen. The road side Hertz operator told us to save our receipts for our Lift expense that would be reimbursed, not only are they not reimbursing me for that they charged me $127 refueling charges on the broken down vehicle and also refuse to reimburse me for the $246 rental charge on the the replacement vehicle, I had already paid for the the entire rental that broke down through expedia. After 10 phone calls and without a shadow of a doubt 8 hours of being on the phone, they told me that their was nothing wrong with the vehicle that broke down so they will not reimburse me, such a crock of , and if I dispute the charges on my American express I will get the money back but then they will put me on a do not rent to list and NO rental company will rent to me in the future, so NEVER use Hertz or Dollar they have the worst customer service in the world. I have never done this in my life, this is the first time I have ever written a bad review, not my style. Just didn't want anyone else to get ripped off by these two terrible companies (actually one)Review fromKatherine P

1 starOn 17th June, I ordered a Hertz Rental car. I received my confirmation number the same day. I was asked to be at the Hertz Rental office on 8000 Georgia Ave by 10:45 am on 19th June as the office closed at 11:00 am. I was there on time. As I walked into the office, there was only one lady behind the counter waiting on a man and two others standing by to be waited on.
As I entered the office, the lady looked up at me and said in a very loud and aggressive manner that if 'I am there to pick up a car, she has no cars'. I asked her if she was speaking to me; I then informed her that I had a reservation. She said she still had no cars and that I should have received a call to say there were no cars. Confused about how I could have taken my time to order a vehicle and receive a confirmation from Hertz and now be told there were no cars was quite unbelievable. I just turned around and walked out. Not at any time did this lady say sorry, this should not have happened, or any such comment.
I am old enough to realize how long Hertz has been around, and I am also old enough to know that Hertz used to be one of the leading and most reliable car rentals. To see Hertz deteriorate to this is something I cannot imagine. The fact that this lady very likely still has a job at Hertz is even more unbelievable. If Hertz is tired of being in the business and chooses not to fix these issues, Hertz needs to throw in the towel. Look at all the reviews that are a 1-star? I doubt you are even reading all these reviews. There is nothing good here to read!
You have lost many customers and now, you have just lost another one, me. What you fail to realize is that customers have choices and many of us are now looking at our other options.
Customer service is key and, hopefully, you will find managers that realize this and turn your company from a 1-star, back to a 5-star car rental!Review fromRuthanna I

1 starPrepaid for a $102 rental. My card then had two deposits placed on it. One for $100 and one for $200. Two weeks later I am still trying to get the holds released from my card. They gave me some bogus release numbers that mean nothing to the credit card company. I will walk before I ever rent from herz again. DO NOT RENT FROM THEM. THEY HOLD YOUR MONEY HOSTAGEReview fromHelene K

1 starCar I rented was not available, received a comparable car after going back and forth a lot. This is after waiting in line at the Hertz gold member counter for a bit to start with. Got the car, windshield wiper fluid was low. Drove to my first stop, got a low tire pressure warning. Ended up not being able to use the car at all. Hertz would not send out roadside assistance to change the tire on a car they sent out with a nail in the tire. Just awful all around.Review fromShaglavia J
