It appears that I am not alone in my disappointment with Family Tree Maker. I, too, purchased the Companion book in 2020, and have made several phone calls only to be told each time it will be coming out in a few months.A year-and-a-half later I am still waiting. They do not have a **************************** They have people hired to read off of a prepared sheet! What ticks me off the most is that they have my money and I have nothing to show for it.0 stars in my book.

My story is similar to others on here. I purchased the software in November 2019, and at the same time paid as well for the "updated" Handbook - I think they call it the Companion Guide - as well as shipping for the handbook. I have never received it. I have written to the company several times over the past 3 years and eventually received replies from someone named ******. The company has my money, but I don't have the Guide.****** "apologized" but said the handbook is still in progress, and I would be sure to receive it free of charge (even though I paid for it in advance) when it is completed. He advised me to use the "built-in" manual, which is frankly not very good.In my last email I told ****** I had lost patience, and if the handbook is not immediately forthcoming I would like my monies returned. I have not received a reply. That was several months ago. I have kept copies of all the emails. I am experienced with computers (since ****) yet I have difficulties with the software. So if there is indeed an "updated version", lets have it. And lets have the Companion Guide as well. Or, return the funds.

To be honest, I am confused with the comments concerning the companion guide that people cannot "find" as it is embedded as a link to the online companion guide. It is located under the Help pull down menu tab, third selection down. Click on FTM 2019 Companion Guide... This will take you to the site that stores the *** file. You can then choose to save it or read it online. To be honest, I would save a copy as a backup, but use the online version (to make sure you have the latest info). If you cannot connect (no internet connection or whatever, you still have a copy on your computer). Printing it is about 335 pages (not my preference). I have had a hardcopy on my computer since its release and tested the connection to the guide before this review. Note that I have found no issues with it with the 2017 version or its 2019 upgrade. It has no issues with Windows 11 either. Tip: no genealogy can create a good management strategy for you. That takes time to develop. There has been frustration with updates (few and far between) and I would retain an online copy (updated online version of your ancestry tree). Software packages cannot be all things to all people, but if you have a large Ancestry tree, FTM is the only surefire way to get all your data from Ancestry to your computer. I have yet to upgrade to the recent version ( just got the notice of upgrade from Mackiev today) so I may revise it to 4 stars if I see more improvements.

I purchased Family Tree Maker 2019 in May 2019 and the Companion Guide in October 2019.I have chatted with them online several times about issues with the program, especially one in which you cannot actually search Ancestry.com from within the program. Apologists suggest you just go directly into the Ancestry window to search. If you have to do that, you may as well, skip even trying to work within the program. The last time, they told me they were making me a Beta tester. Even as they said it, I knew they were throwing me a bone to get me off their case. Of course, there has been nothing to Beta test.As to the manual, they suggest I just use the imbedded manual. No apologies, no nothing.I teach genealogy classes and have had occasion to demonstrate how to do things with your programs. At this point, I am pretty impressed with RootsMagic and wish I had made the change to RM in 2016 when Ancestry bailed on FTM. I intend to tell everyone I know that RM is the better product at half the price.

On December 1, 2020, I ordered and paid $29 for an updated "FTM 2019 Companion Guide" which I have never received. (July 2022).I have contacted them (MacKiev) several times with the response that the ordered item will soon be sent. Most recently they gave me an offer to return my $29 or continue waiting. I asked for a refund. I have never received a refund! Is this FRAUD?

I ordered the *** Version **** of Family Tree Maker's Companion Guide two days after it was introduced. That was 11/30/20. After trying to contact the company serval times I have had no response. I would like the book or my money returned. This is a poor way to do business, and I hope their software is not as much as a problem.
