My loan was approved, and I called several times during business hours, to speak with my local branch about the status of my loan, and no answer. I also tried emailing and texting with no resolution. There's a hard inquiry on my report and I signed a contract. A human employee at Mariner Finance has not made contact with me. I just want the delivery of my payment.Business Response

Mariner received an online application from Amini ****** on September 15, 2022. The application was referred to the local Mariner branch due to income qualifications. It is important to note that pre-approved loan offers presented are conditional based on the information available at that time and are subject to change based on the applicant's credit qualifications and the ability to successfully complete all application requirements.

I missed a payment on 8/20/22 and attempted to pay the past due balance on 9/20/22. I utilized the Mariner APP and unfortunately the APP would not accept a payment. Today I received a letter from Diana ** ******** Mariner's Attorney dated 9/19/2022(when my account was less than 30 days delinquent) that my account was being referred for legal action. In this letter it stated that Mariner has made several attempts to resolve this debt. I've received one call from Mariner, and their attempt to resolve the debt was simply pay it. I've been hospitalized after surgery, I've just gotten over COVID and my finances are a little crazy right now. On top of that I'm a disabled Veteran suffering from PTSD and the letter from Ms. Holland has done nothing to aggravate that. I want to work with Mariner to resolve this debt, I don't like being late on payments, however after being sick, it was either pay my rent or pay Mariner. It's funny throughout the pandemic Banks and other lending institutions were working with their customers to help them. Yet here I am needing help and sorry nothing we can do. Maybe it's some form of subtle discrimination, perhaps its lazy management. But to send me a letter threatening legal action when my account is less than 30 days past due that's just absurd and harassing!Business Response

Thank you for contacting us. Mariner Finance, LLC ("Mariner") takes customer concerns seriously, and our Customer Relations Department has thoroughly investigated this complaint.
A review of account records confirm Mariner made reasonable attempts to contact Mr. Peters regarding his account status. With the account remaining past due for the August 20, 2022 contractual, Mariner's system auto generated a delinquency letter, as it does for all delinquent accounts, outlining potential next steps in the event the delinquency is not addressed. Mariner has not initiated legal action to collect Mr. Peter's account as of the date of this complaint.
Regarding Mr. Peter's attempt to make a payment via our mobile app- it is important to note that Mariner's app and online Customer Account Center (CAC) will not accept a payment for less than the amount due at the time. Because Mr. Peters' account was due for August and September at the time the payment was attempted, the system would not accept less than that amount. Partial account payments can be made directly with the local branch or by mail.
Mr. Peter's spoke with the local Mariner Assistant Vice President on September 27, 2022. A deferment was processed to assist Mr. Peters in bringing the account current. We believe our customer's concerns have been resolved.
We appreciate the opportunity to assist Mr. Peters. Should he have additional questions or concerns, we ask that he contact our Customer Relations Department at XXX-XXX-XXXX.

Was sent a check for 3,000 . I thought it was money owed to me for a class action suit. Then was told it was a loan. I never applied for a loan. There is no paperwork signed by me that I applied for a loan. Now it's being reported to credit agencies stating I owe 6,000 dollars. They will not even speak to me about it . They have many disputes and a bad bbb rating. My credit is perfect except for this black mark . It has increased by 3 grand .Business Response

Thank you for contacting us. Mariner Finance, LLC ("Mariner") takes customer concerns seriously, and our Customer Relations Department has thoroughly researched this account.
A prescreened firm offer of credit, also known as a "Loan by Mail," was sent to Ms. Shaughnessy. The "Loan by Mail" is a direct mail loan offer that complies with all applicable state and federal regulations and is extended to credit qualified individuals. The prescreened offer, as required by law, clearly states that it is a loan offer and by executing the document, the individual is entering into a contractual loan agreement.
Mariner received notice that Ms. Shaughnessy executed the offer by on May 23, 2019. Upon execution of the offer, Mariner attempted to conduct a welcome call to go over the loan terms with Ms. Shaughnessy and mailed a welcome letter detailing the terms of loan and providing available options for submitting payments. Customers are also provided an option to cancel the loan by returning the principal balance within 15 days of the account opening.
Mariner received this same dispute from Ms. Shaughnessy in January 2021 and responded appropriately. Please see attached. For any additional questions regarding this account, we ask Ms. Shaughnessy to contact our Customer Relations Department at XXX-XXX-XXXX. If she would like to make a payment, she may contact our Recovery Department at XXX-XXX-XXXX.

I was paying off some of my credit card debt and a personal loan through a credit union loan in June 2022. I sent out checks from my credit union bank to my creditors including Mariner Finance. I had been trying to contact them via website contact email and by phone because I couldn't access my account and to ask for a payoff amount. Since the balance had not changed since my previous monthly payment and the date I sent off the check, I knew there was time for them to process my check so that the balance would be $0.00. However, they took out an automatic debit monthly payment and didn't clear my check until after this date. I expected to have the automatic payment returned to me. I called and a woman told me no, I wouldn't be getting that full amount back but some charge of roughly $30.00, a balance of $99.00 or so. I was also told I would be getting the check by mail with a package detailing the breakdown. I never got this package nor any further communications about my refund payment. I reached out to them around September 1st or 2nd because I had not heard from them since July. I checked online and saw that a state general is suing them in five states for their foul practices. Now I am worried I'll never see my refund payment that is owed to me. This was the only creditor that had delayed clearing my paid in full check all because they wanted to earn $30.00 or so in interest? That is what I'm left thinking because it made no sense that I was not only paying them twice but I don't even have the refund I was told I would get!Business Response

I want to thank BBB of Greater Maryland for allowing me the opportunity to share my experience with Mariner Finance. I didn't expect anyone from that company to reach out but I guess when there's a complaint filed against them for the way they run their company, they make responding a top priority. Unfortunately, I have decided to address my issues with Mariner Finance with Matthew J. Platkin, Acting Attorney General of New Jersey and copying Attorney General **** Shapiro who thankfully filed a Complaint against Mariner Finance on August 16, 2022. It's a 444 page document that is available online since it's open to the public and worth a read if you have the time! Mariner Finance should just cut a deal with them because they are guilty of the Factual Allegations and Claims for Relief presented in the Complaint. I can attest to several under each part of their Complaint to how they tried to sneakily bill me more for unwanted add-ons as well as how they try to manipulate vulnerable customers. I hope it's okay that I share my BBB complaint with them. The last action that someone from Mariner Finance's Customer Service Manager's Department, Tisha *****, should have taken was to bait or antagonize a customer who has already involved BBB in a complaint against her company!
I can confirm Ms. ***** had left a voicemail message last Thursday, September 15, 2022 that I listened to last weekend. She came off as pleasant in her message with giving me the option to either have them overnight the check or come in-person to pick it up. I called her back on Monday, September 19, 2022 to let her know either option worked for me since I now live in Virginia and there is a location near my workplace. I left a message with my new address. She ended up calling me back and explained that Mariner Finance isn't set up where one branch can issue a check for an account with a different branch. However, instead of just confirming my mailing address and stating she would pass ** the information to the Union, NJ branch and ending the call, she chose to grill me regarding my new address. She asked why I didn't tell the Union, NJ location my new addressnever asking me when I had moved. For some reason, her goal was to flip the situation as though it's my fault I have yet to get a refund check. She was very unprofessional which is shocking since she works in "Customer Service" Relations. Poor customer service skills. She wasn't a representative of the Union, NJ location so why would she personally need to know anything but where to send my check? Every time I had tried calling Mariner Finance, I didn't get an answer. No one had called me back when I was trying to discuss a payoff request in June 2022. There are only three times people from Mariner Finance had reached out to me after I had to initiate contact: In August 2022 from an online inquiry contact form and the two in September 2022 in response to this complaint with BBB. The latter two calls were not picked up because they either called while I was at work or commuting home.
Ms. *****'s interrogation about my new address and why didn't I inform them makes no sense when I wasn't able to reach anyone from the Union, NJ location in June 2022. My August 3, 2022 phone call from the Assistant Manager, Marquita Lucas on August 3, 2022 only happened because of my online inquiry. She was the one who told me they had mailed me a check and documentation explaining the breakdown from my two July 2022 payments and why I was getting less than I had expected. I honestly don't know what information they had on me since I have had limited communications with anyone at their business. I felt like the business hours the automatic message listed needed to be updated since no one was calling me back. I couldn't access my account to even try to see if I can update my address so how exactly did Ms. ***** believe that I should still have informed them. I did explain all this to her as well as mentioning the envelope the check they opened had my Virginia address. She found that absurd while I found it crazy that in 2022, a check took 13 days to be received and cleared. They can't seem to communicate with me voluntarily about my refund check status, but they know how to keep emailing me new loan opportunities from "Make no payments until October 2022!" and "*******, apply today with quick funding available!" I'm having trouble getting a refund, but I'm supposed to apply for another loan with them?
And this is all because I had decided to pay off my Mariner Finance loan in June 2022. A personal loan opportunity with my credit union bank came in mid-June 2022. Upon approval, my bank's interest rate was going to be 5.99% while Mariner Finance's was 29.99%. I had arranged for five of my accounts to have a $0.00 balance and all that was required was proof of the current balances on my credit cards and loan with Mariner Finance. I had been locked out of my account for entering the wrong password *** they don't offer a "forget your password" reset option on their website so I was left getting "Sign-in Help" by manually submitting personal information for one-time limited access to see my balance to send to my bank. Every single time I tried to access my account, I had to go this manual route. I also called several times to get assistance plus the payoff loan amount as instructed on their site. So, while I was trying to reach someone at the Union, NJ location, time was ticking and I wanted to pay off the loan before my July 9, 2022 payment due date. I would check it every single day from the time I was informed by my bank for proof of the creditors account balances to make sure the total never changed.
My bank issued five checks for my creditors, and I mailed them out on June 29, 2022, before the cut off time for shipping that evening. Two checks that went to North Carolina were posted on July 1st. Another one posted to my account on July 2nd in Nevada. On July 5th, my fourth check posted in South Dakota. All went to p.o. boxes while the one for Mariner Finance did not post until July 12th at a physical address in New Jersey. And this is what was stressing me out, the fact that the check for Mariner Finance was still not posted before my July 9th due date and an automatic payment would go through instead. And that's exactly what ended up happening. So not only did they receive my regular payment, they also cashed my payoff balance check leaving me still wondering where my refund is and why didn't anyone contact me if payoff amounts have to be called in according to their site? Ms. ***** tried to explain that they charge a daily interest rate but my balance never changed from the date of June 22, 2022 when a representative from my credit union bank notified me that payoff statements were needed to finally seeing Mariner Finance update my balance to $0.00. The account balance I sent to my bank for Mariner Finance has "Today's Payoff" Amount with what would be the loan balance. It had not changed the numerous times I checked since I was offered my credit union bank loan. I wouldn't just send out a check with a specific amount while continuing to see a daily change of a balance each day when my goal is to pay off the loan.
I will end this response by mentioning the Account Statement Ms. Lucas emailed me on August 3, 2022 did not show anything about the refund amount she told me over the phone. The statement did show my July 9, 2022 payment as well as listing the check from my credit union bank as "Loan Payoff". There was no indication of my overpayment balance being deducted to confirm the amount Ms. Lucas had told me on the phone. There wasn't much to this one document that offered any assistance except a breakdown of the distributing amounts for each payment for principal and interest. That was something I could see on my own in the account. That statement didn't offer me what Ms. Lucas had explained to me in our telephone conversation. The last communication I made with someone from Mariner Finance was a returned call to a representative at the Union, NJ office. I believe the name he left in his voicemail message on September 16, 2022 was Alan. I had returned his call on September 19, 2022 with my new address and let him know that I was going to share my experience with Mariner Finance with the Attorney Generals suing them.
Thank you for your time.

2 days ago I received an email from Mariner Finance. The email was titled "******, check your offers" After opening the email a message in Yellow stated I had an available offer. Under that message another message stated "You are approved* for $6,500.00! This offer expires on 10/17/2022!" This is copied and pasted. After filling out the application, the company denied the loan. They didn't offer any counter. I asked the loan officer about the email offer. Telling him the email stated I was approved. Not pre-approved. Midway down it even states it guaranteed. "To take advantage of this guaranteed opportunity*, please take one of the following steps:

Thank you for contacting us. Mariner Finance, LLC ("Mariner") takes customer concerns seriously, and our Customer Relations Department has thoroughly researched this complaint.
Potential loan offers presented are conditional based on the information available at that time and are subject to change based on the applicant's credit qualifications and the ability to successfully complete all application requirements.
After having submitted the initial application information, Mr. ******'s application was denied due to income requirements. The income verification provided did not meet the minimum net disposable income requirements. Had the verified income allowed, a counter offer would have been presented.
Because Mr. ******'s application was denied prior to signing a loan agreement, only a soft credit inquiry was performed. We invite Mr. ****** to apply for a loan with us in the future should a need arise.

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
Very generic response. Sounds like it was read right off a script. Where does it say pre-approved.
They know nothing about my credit to make a decision. They never pulled it. A soft inquiry cant provide the information needed. So again, how do you have the information to offer me something, but denied me base upon reading NO credit history? I've had loans with this company in the past. Paid them off way before the mature date. So I got denied for paying stuff OFF early??? Very interesting. So before you break out another generic message, save yourself the time and effort. This company lied to me any now the BBB. SHAMEFUL
BTW, I make more than enough to afford this payment and many more if I wanted.

Why choose a BBB Accredited Business?BBB Business Profiles may not be reproduced for sales or promotional purposes.
BBB Business Profiles are provided solely to assist you in exercising your own best judgment. BBB asks third parties who publish complaints, reviews and/or responses on this website to affirm that the information provided is accurate. However, BBB does not verify the accuracy of information provided by third parties, and does not guarantee the accuracy of any information in Business Profiles.
When considering complaint information, please take into account the company's size and volume of transactions, and understand that the nature of complaints and a firm's responses to them are often more important than the number of complaints.
BBB Business Profiles generally cover a three-year reporting period, except for customer reviews. Customer reviews posted prior to July 5, 2024, will no longer be published when they reach three years from their submission date. Customer reviews posted on/after July 5, 2024, will be published indefinitely unless otherwise voluntarily retracted by the user who submitted the content, or BBB no longer believes the review is authentic. BBB Business Profiles are subject to change at any time. If you choose to do business with this company, please let them know that you checked their record with BBB.
As a matter of policy, BBB does not endorse any product, service or business. Businesses are under no obligation to seek BBB accreditation, and some businesses are not accredited because they have not sought BBB accreditation. BBB charges a fee for BBB Accreditation. This fee supports BBB's efforts to fulfill its mission of advancing marketplace trust.
