We hired Shamrock Chimney on Saturday, December 3, 2022 to repoint and fix our leaking chimney. Work was to start on the following Monday but was delayed to Tuesday. On Tuesday work started at 10:27am. Lunch started at 12:27pm and lasted until 3:42pm. Then they worked until 9:16pm, using my husband's lights. Before leaving they covered the chimney with my husband's tarp (consequently ruining it). They were to return on Thursday. They called at 1:00 saying they were 1/2 hour out, but didn't arrive until 2:50. Left again at 3:39. We were not happy with the work so they agreed to return on Thursday, December 15, after accusing us of ;not liking the work bc we didn't like the young man in charge. That couldn't be further from the truth. We DID like him at first, that's why he got the job. They arrived at 8:45, did a minimal water test, found water leaking near the top so then went to purchase cement. Shouldn't they have appropriate materials on hand? Anyway, we had to leave for a family emergency and were gone for two days. upon inspecting the work we found mortar on the roof, siding, and windows. The cement was not the same color as original. They used black tar in areas to seal gaps with no regard to aesthetics. They said they were waterproofing the chimney and that did not prove to be true. There is still an area at the top of the chimney that needs sealing. And now there is condensation near the inside top of the chimney which drips down into the house bc they put some sort of cover on the top of the chimney. We have called numerous times to get them to come back and fix the issues, but never receive a callback. They were paid $5000 in cash.

In early September 2022 (my receipt is dated September 9 but the workmen were here 2 days to complete the work). I have 2 chimneys - one that is exhaust for the water heater and another to vent two fireplaces. I needed dampers put on the two fireplace flues on one chimney and a liner put in the other. I needed repointing on the fireplace chimney as well. In December I started using one of the fireplaces - infrequently maybe once a week. Almost 4 weeks ago, when using the fireplace - so that one damper they installed was open - I heard a loud noise and when I went to close the damper the damper chain was gone - the damper had flown off the chimney taking the chain with it and landed in my driveway. I called the next day. Suffice it to say I have evidence of many unreturned phone calls - 2 weeks ago I was told sometime would be her on a Tuesday - when no one showed up all day and it was getting dark, I called to see what was going on. I left a message because as was the case 90% of the times I called, no one answered. Spent the next two weeks calling to get them out here to fix the damper assembly (living in the meantime with the equivalent of an open window in my house including during the arctic front days last week) - calling and calling leaving message after message without getting a call back. Finally, this past Monday morning finally got the receptionist (?) on the phone and she said shed get someone out here Thursday (today) but it wouldnt be until afternoon. I waited all day- called 5 different times starting around 2:30 to get an estimate of when to expect them (leaving a message to that effect each time) - no one ever answered or called me back or showed up. Its been nearly a month that Ive had a gaping hole from my house because there is no way to close the flue. I spent over $5000 for the work that they did shoddily and I want to have it fixed by someone else and I need the other work inspected for ******************* havent used the other flue yet.

      Better Business Bureau:

I have reviewed the response made by the business - TWO YEARS after the complaint was made - in reference to complaint ID# ********* They did finally, after about a month, come and fix the damper that had flown off after hardly any use. However, this late response is unacceptable - they were horrible when I called to complain to the "manager" - not apologetic at all and telling ME to go ahead and file a complaint -- that it didn't affect them - that it was up to them to do anything about it. My complaint has NOT been resolved because I went through the coldest month of the year in Massachusetts with an open to the sky chimney before they got back. Heating costs in Massachusetts are ridiculous and I am sure my heat was cranking away only to go out that chimney. I had asked for a refund or at least partial refund of my $5,000 ... received nothing and not even a communication until now.

I know they will not refund any money -- they couldn't even be bothered to answer THIS complaint (from February 2023) for TWO YEARS. I submitted this complaint to BBB more as a warning to others NOT to use them more than anything else.

On January 12, 2023 I had an appointment with Shamrock Chimney to evaluate and take care of issue of water entering my fireplace and front on fireplace. Their technician, *****, did evaluation and presented quote for work that needed to be done to correct my fireplace water damage issues. ***** explained to me that my flashing was not done properly and needed to be replaced. He said he would remove flashing and shingles and replace with new materials properly done. He quoted me $600. for new flashing and repair cracks in fireplace. He then told me if I want to complete all work to eliminate any water from being able to enter chimney he would install new damper system for $700. I agreed to the $1300. fee that I was told would solve my water issues. I agreed and paid the fee including a $40 charge to remove debris. ***** and his partner installed the new damper but did not replace flashing. They chalked my exsisting flashing. I expressed my displeasure with the service and asked them to replace the flashing as quoted. I had to leave my house at that time but had another contractor at my residence at the time who told me Shamrock left as soon as I left. I called Shamrock Chimney to have the issue resolved but I have not had any luck getting them to return. I still have water in my fireplace. They did not solve any of the water issues for me. I would like the flashing replaced as they quoted me. I would like my water issues resolved.

On July 17, 2019, Shamrock chimney stuccoed my chimney. In the summer of 2021, they came out to clean it and found the stucco was cracked. They said it should have had rubberized paint, but didnt. The damage was repaired under warranty, but I paid an additional $600 for the paint. They said it wouldnt crack again. In summer 2022, I was on the roof and noticed it had cracked and was falling apart again. On July 19, 2022, I called to report the issue. They asked for photos, which I sent. I then called and emailed repeatedly with no response until November 20th asking how they would repair the chimney. The last email was to say that if I didnt hear back by the end of the year, I would be filing a complaint. No response, so here I am.

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID# ********, and have determined that my complaint has NOT been resolved because:The original complaint and images clearly show that it was the stucco work that was under warranty that was defective. The workers came back and painted it with sealer to fix the problem, which they said should have been done originally, and would prevent the stucco from cracking again. As you can see from the included images, it cracked again after the sealing paint was applied. When I called to report that the solution failed to fix the problem, the company failed to respond in any way. After repeated attempts, emails, and calls on my part.

Shamrock inspected and replaced my 15 year old chimney (which was just fine) three years ago in 11/15/2019 for $2000. In the recent medium wind the whole unit blew off. They are not taking any responsibility. Please help me in recovering my money or get it replaced/repaired. Very cheap work and no liability.

October 9, 2020 paid: $2100 I wanted my fireplace inspected and repaired so that I could use it. Shamrock came out and told me I needed a liner. So they put in a liner and charged me $2100. I've been trying to get them back out for the past year because every time I use fireplace, the basement fills with smoke. They have not come out or called me back even though I have called numerous times over the past year. The liner they put in that they attached to my furnace is also coming out of the wall because of the poor cement job and must be further investigated. I had a MHS licensed technician come out today to tell me they used the wrong type of cement, did not clean or sweep the chimney, and that they did not repair the cracks in my chimney. I now have to pay another company more to fix the botched job that they did. The work they did was not good, I would like a refund so that I can pay for the work done right. I can provide a detailed report with pictures from Central Jersey Fireplace which shows the extent of the poor job and damage.

We had our chimney rebuilt by this company in June of 2021. The total cost was $7000.00. We received a 25 year warranty for the work. Our propane insert fireplace never worked correctly during the winter of 2021/2022. We do not use the fireplace during the warmer months of course and when the weather turned cool, we scheduled our propane insert for routine service and cleaning. (This was with a technician that only services propane fireplaces, not chimneys.) We told this technician that the fireplace had not worked right during the past winter. He said the insert was fine and the problem was likely in the chimney. Because of my husband's age, the technician went on the roof and looked down the chimney to find the flue pipes broken and twisted. No one has been inside the chimney since Shamrock completed the work. We were told we could not use the fireplace till the flue pipes were replaced and installed properly. We called Shamrock Chimney and left a message. This was the first of MANY messages. Finally someone from their company showed up, looked in the chimney and agreed that the fault was theirs and they needed to fix it. Then we heard nothing from them. Again after many MANY messages, they called us and said that parts had been ordered. This was 2 weeks ago, We have called many times since, asking for an update on when the work can be done. They have never called back and do not answer the phone. We have a copy of the original invoice stating that we have a 25 year warranty. We also have a picture of the mess in our chimney.

      Customer Answer

      Date: 01/03/2023

At this time, I have been contacted directly by Shamrock Chimney regarding complaint ID ********, however my complaint has NOT been resolved because:

The owner of Shamrock Chimney finally answered the phone when I made a final call after filing this complaint. He became instantly angry, complaining about the number of messages we had left asking for a call back. I told him the issue could have been handled if he had simply called me with an update on the status of the repair. He said that he had told my husband that he had ordered the necessary parts. This is NOT true. He NEVER told my husband that he ordered parts. I asked when the parts would arrive. He said he didn't know. This seemed highly suspicious to me - surely any reputable supply parts company could provide an idea of when parts would be available and I told him this. I reminded him that we have a 25 year warranty on this chimney repair and the least we could expect was a phone call with the status of for the repair. At this point he became verbally abusive, screaming at me that he was cancelling the parts order and hanging up. We never asked for a miracle - simply an update on when we could expect them to repair the damage they caused. After he treated me this way on the phone, my husband and I realized that we could not have Shamrock Chimney do the repairs, even though we supposedly have a 25 year warranty. If simply asking for a call back causes the owner to treat us this way, we could not trust them to repair our chimney where the safety of our home and family could be at risk, in light of the fact that a properly working fireplace/chimney involves FIRE in our home. And further, we know that their 25 year warranty is meaningless when simply returning a call engenders this level of anger and abuse. We will have to pay someone else to make the repairs, which will likely cost us thousands. And this after paying $7000 to Shamrock Chimney and their ******* causing the damage.

      Better Business Bureau:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID# ********, and have determined that my complaint has NOT been resolved because:

[Your Answer Here]The original complaint was filed 12/09/2022, which included details of our interactions with Shamrock Chimney, as well as a picture of the mess they left inside our chimney and the invoice for the $7000.00 we paid them to fix the chimney. On or around 02/01/2023 I filed a further update to the complaint, detailing the angry and abusive phone call I had with a person at Shamrock Chimney. This communication took place over TWO YEARS AGO. And now Shamrock Chimney is "truly sorry to hear" that they have not adequately addressed the issues at our home. And they want to assure us that they are committed to resolving this matter. After 2 years, now they are committed. So NO, our complaint has not been resolved. We had to pay additional money to repair the damage that was done by Shamrock Chimney, and go without the use of the fireplace for an extended period of time.  If Shamrock Chimney is truly "committed to resolving the matter," they will refund us $3500.00 - half of what we paid them - for shoddy work that left us with a serious fire hazard in our home. Presumably they can access the original invoice or can look at it via this complaint communication stream, and send a check to the address listed. Or if a reasonable and courteous person at Shamrock Chimney would like to speak to me in person, I can be reached at **************. The only question now is, will it take another 2 years for Shamrock Chimney to take "customer feedback seriously?"

In September 2022 Shamrock CC provided a quote to line my wood burning fireplace and do some very minor exterior chimney repointing. I have used the fireplace for 32 years without a problem. Unfortunately I did not use the fireplace until November at which time my home filled with back up of smoke setting the smoke detectors off. The company did come out and made an adjustment to the damper and claimed my chimney capper was the problem. Chimney capper was removed and a fire was started. However all windows and doors were open to rid the home of smoke. Once the windows in the room were closed, the house again filled with smoke. That was the eeek of 11/14. The smoke filled the entire house, smoke detectors went off. The smell infiltrated my rugs and furniture. Shamrock promised a lifetime warranty. They said someone would come by on 12/1 to correct the problem. No one showed up They do not return my calls I made at least 6 calls this week. i am unable to use a previously functional fireplace I paid $4200 for the liner and repointing. Shamrock does not stand behind its warranty. The install is faulty and I deserve restitution or correction.

10/18/2022- Shamrock Chimney was supposed to clean the chimney for level 3 creosote. They charged $1000 for a *** treatment and fireplace cleaning. The fireplace cleaning did not occur and according to ****************** (when they arrived to install the lining on 11/12) the chimney appeared the same as it did before 11/12/2022- ****************** Company (who is installing fireplace insert and lining) came to check that the chimney was appropriately cleaned and to install the liner. The person stated that it looked the same as it had pre-cleaning and that a cleaning was not performed. I called Shamrock chimney while the ****************** technician was still at the house and spoke with a woman who stated she would pass it along to the **************** and also provided me their email address ********************************** as well. I sent an email that same day.11/16/2022: Due to no response (phone or email) I called the office and explained the situation. I spoke with a person named either ****(?). He stated they would have a technician come out the following day between the hours of 10AM- 2PM.11/17/2022: No one showed up and I called twice and got voicemail both times. I was not able to speak with anyone this day. 11/18/2022: I called again and asked why no one showed up or called to say they would not be coming, and Shamrock Chimney could not give me an answer. We rescheduled the visit for 11/23/2022 and was promised we would be the first visit of the day at 9AM. 11/23/2022: Again, no show and no communication from Shamrock Chimney. I attempted calling and left a voicemail. No return calls have been made. When I called them on this date, I stated I wanted a return call and a refund. I have not received any follow up at this point. During this process I have contacted another chimney cleaning service whom stated that after applying this product a follow up brushing should been performed. I also called the *** chemical company who confirmed this.

      Better Business Bureau:

At this time, I have not been contacted by Shamrock Chimney regarding complaint ID ********. In addition to the original complaint I also found out that I was ripped off for a new chimney cap and flute. Another company came out to do an appropriate job and stated that the reason last season was so smoky in the house was because the incorrectly installed the cap and that it barely opened. They also didn't clean up after themselves and left a mess around the chimney. Never go with this company- they lie, rip people off, and do not perform quality work.

      Sincerely,

      *******************************
