In early April of 2023, I began planning to move out of my apartment. I was looking for a moving company who could move my belongings and place them in storage for a few months until I was ready to move into another home. In late April, I received an unsolicited phone call from a person named ***** who worked for Tri-State Area Movers. ***** had seemingly got my phone number from some kind of list of people who may be looking to move. ***** mentioned that Tri-State Area Movers could come to my home and provide an estimate for moving services. A few days later, ***** visited my home while my wife, ***********************, was there. ***** assessed the amount of property wed need to move and provided a quote on April 26, 2023. The quote I received was as follows:Quote: $1,338.50 According to ***** this quote included moving my stuff into storage, storing it for 3 months (the expected amount of time I would need to store it), and then delivering it back to my new house when we were ready. On June 30, my move date, Tri-State Area Movers was supposed to arrive between 8:30-10:30AM. I had already left the home with our kids to get them out of the way and my wife had stayed behind to coordinate the move with the movers. Tri-State finally arrived just before noon. My wife had only a few hours before she had to leave for a show she was participating in. The Tri-State team packed up our belongings along with about 25% more stuff than we had originally expected (the original estimate contemplated 582 cubic feet of belongings and we ended up with 732 cubic feet). By about 4pm they had everything in the truck and my wife had to leave imminently to make her appointment. Moreover, this was our last day living in our home and had to leave within a few hours. At this point, the head mover came up to my wife and said this is the bad part. He then told her that we were not actually paying the $1,338.50 we had thought but instead $3,449.75. The mover confessed that this is a problem he experiences in most moves and its part of the scheme. At this point my wife was stuck. She couldnt have the movers unpack all of our stuff and put it back in the house because we had to vacate the apartment within a few hours. There was nothing to do but pay and deal with the problem later. On July 5th I called Tri-State to try to understand how a quote of $1,338.50 could have ballooned to $3,449.75 - a 2.6x increase. The person on the phone told me I had more stuff to move and then asked if I thought that having more stuff should mean I pay more money. I agreed that having more stuff should result in paying more money, but I would think that having 25% more stuff would result in 25% more cost - not 160% more cost. Over the course of the coming weeks, I called a number of times and tried to plead my case. I continued to express confusion over how a-little-more-stuff-than-expected could have somehow increased the price so exorbitantly. I also expressed frustration at the predicament Tri-State left us in: with nowhere to go or put our stuff, how were we supposed to handle the situation they put us in? I told them it felt an awful lot like extortion. These phone calls got me nowhere. On November 8, 2023, I called Tri-State to plan to have my stuff, currently housed in their storage facility, delivered to our new home on November 22, 2023. The woman on the phone told me I had now had a balance of about $2,400 (I dont remember the exact number but it was in this ballpark. Tri-State has subsequently sent me a confirmation email that now says my balance is $1,196.50 but given my experience so far, Im skeptical that number is actually accurate.) All the while, my understanding going back to the very beginning of the ordeal was that the move back was already included in my price - Chase had said so from the beginning and nothing provided to me throughout the ordeal would have suggested otherwise. When I mentioned this, the woman on the phone told me I was being patronizing to her. Through some light research, its clear I am not the only person who has been a victim of this scam. You can see similar reviews on the companys Yelp page and BBB page - I have pasted some in Appendix C below. Based on the comment the mover made to my wife when he finished the move and these reviews, its clear this is a pattern of fraud that the company clearly is aware of but does nothing to correct. I believe this business is operating in bad faith and taking advantage of consumers in moments when they are highly vulnerable - during a stressful move after they have collected all of their property and have no choice but to pay them.

On October 20th Tri-state area mover picked my things my dinning table with 6 chairs, bicycle, 2 small boxes, 3 medium size boxes 70 labs each and 1 small bag, picture collage and broom decor. I explained to them everything I had the quantity and they told me that I was fine. They said that the packaging was all included in the pricing. I did my packing myself and all they did was pick up my stuffs. They came late and never called to say that they were running late. I was waiting from 8 am onward and they arrived after 5pm that day. The movers mentioned that I was a little over the estimated cubic but he was not going to charge me. I told him that if I am over and it will affect my pricing do not move my things. He said I was ok and they will not charge extra so I agreed for them to move my things. We loaded it in the van that night. I initially paid $100 as a deposit then half of the moving cost $650 out of $1275.00. The remaining half I am suppose to paid when my things got deliver. I called them multiple times to ensures my things will be deliver on November 3. They told me yes, Friday I will get my things, they are always going south. I told them I travel for work and I am not always home and it is important that my items get deliver during the time frame they promised. I kept calling them because the online portal kept showing that my delivery was scheduled for November 9th and no one is around during that day. They said do not worry. 11/3/2023 nothing came and no one called me. I called them that day and they said that my things will be deliver on Monday. I told them that I am not home on Monday because I am going away. I called back to deliver my thing so that my neighbor can received. The quote went from $1275.00 total price to $3,364.50 as my remaining balance. Thought it was a mistake but I spoke with ***** who did my estimate she said that I agreed to this amount which is not true. She said that they will put a lien my things.

Rep(*****) came to the house did a walk-through of the entire house, and provided us with a quote of $6857.80. Move Date: April 7, 2023, Estimated Movers' Arrival Time: 6:30 PM - 7:30 With this quote, they agreed to pack the large furniture with extra padding since the items were being delivered to a storage unit. At around 2 p.m. the movers showed up all "buzzed up" and were rude to my wife as she tried explaining to them our scheduled pick-up time. The movers then stormed out at this point my wife called the office only to learn that the movers already called and said that we refused their services. The woman at the office assured us she would fix the problem, and after a while, a man came out of the truck ready to work. He apologized and asked if they could start from upstairs while we finished up the garage. Upon completing the pack out, the supervisor gave us an invoice for Boxes and Square Footage that was in the truck. That value came out to be $9731.31. We called the office on this new cost and were advised to pay the down payment and when the truck gets back to their facility they will evaluate what was packed vs. the paperwork. The price remained the same. It was delivered one week later, but they refused to unpack it without final payment. On the Contract, we stated that the large furniture was to go to the back of the storage, along with boxes that were labeled back of the storage. When reminded they kept saying no problem but did whatever they liked upon checking and letting them know they got upset. Now they were using obscene language and throwing stuff around the truck when the headboard fell from the truck and broke along with other furnitures. I had many phone calls and texts to the supervisor ****** since April who keeps promising a restoration company but with no success. Every time I call the office I'm getting the run around saying that someone will call me back. The last I *************************** was supposed to call me. Now no answer when we call.

I hired a moving company called Tri-State Area Movers. They say they are located in ***********, **. The *** has their dot # as ******* and at ****** St *********.Asked for an estimate to move from ************ ** to ******* **, a 1-bedroom apartment.they sent an estimator to the apartment and I was quoted in the $4200 area. As I packed myself up, I compared my stuff to the inventory they listed and noticed many items were missing. I called and added the items and the adjusted estimate came to $4818.32. Why those items were omitted made me start to think that it was a game they play to up the price on moving day. But now , even though $600 more, I was confident that it was accurate.Moving Day Jul 29, 2023. Once all packed up driver informs me my cubic feet used is way up. How can that be the inventory was calculated by your people? Anyway it was pay half or leave stuff behind. so I pay using Venmo 1/2 of $6626.28 or $*******. Remainder due prior to unloading of goods. (according to contract)During phone conversation the following week, where I was trying to find out the delivery date, I am told final pay due before truck is loaded. and not ******* but $3501.14 because they add tolls. I say thats not what contract says told I have old contract Aug 4. Delivery comes and my $2500 queen-sized mattress is strapped on outside of truck in pouring rain. Mattress is damaged, soaking wet, ruined. Called immediately and spoke to ***** who said she put in claim and I would hear in ***** hours. I call on Monday. No claim yet, call Wednesday. Spoke with owner *******. He says I'll call you back. never does. I call today Monday Aug 14, no claim was made without pics. Its one delay after another.I want the mattress paid for $2500, and my cost returned to estimated price of $4818.32 so an additional $2005.96, so $4505.96.This company is operating without a license and has multiple complaints similar to mine.

In June 2023 we moved from Bayside, ** to *****, **. Tri State Area Movers gave me a quote for approx. $3k. Upon arrival to move, they indicated that the cost would now be $13k. Upon delivery, 29 boxes and 2 pieces of furniture were missing. Included is jewelers, hearing aids and several family heirlooms. The company refuses to engage with me regarding this and refuses to give me insurance claim information. The value of the items is in excess of $25k. I and my wife are elderly and they have stolen from me. I am a ******* Veteran as well. I believe this company are thieves and should be shut down by the ***********.

      Business Response

We originally picked up ********************** belongings on June 16th, he had an estimated amount of 529cf of items to bring down to Georgia. Summer is our peak season in which we are booked back-to-back so we had only allotted for 600cf for Hugs belongings in case he had a little bit extra. When we arrived our movers found out that there was an additional **** cf to the 529cf that was estimated. Due to us being booked back-to-back, we scheduled our log distance moves in advance and we did inform the customer, **** that we only had enough room to take 600cf of his items in the first round. Due to it being quite a bit over the amount that was planned we would be able to schedule the next delivery on a convivence run when we slowed down a bit and had room. The customer, ****, agreed to this and has received all of his belongings as of 8/10/2023.

I would like to inform you that the statement from Tri-State Area Moving is not totally correct. Yes, I did receive most of the missing items but still missing 2 tool boxes, a computer chair and some electronic items. I have texted them with no response.

On July 6, they quoted approximately $2,700 for my interstate move with three stops, based on precise measurements. On the moving day, they charged over $3,900, claiming I exceeded the estimate without measuring. My belongings filled less than half of the truck, a ***** cubic square foot truck. The move took longer, and I suspect they intentionally delayed to charge extra. They refused to unpack until I paid the higher amount and threatened to take my belongings back to their storage if I didn't pay within 10 minutes.I seek your intervention to investigate and mediate a fair resolution. I request a refund for the unjustly inflated amount.

During the week of February 6, 2023, we hired Tri-State ********************************************* Corp. to pick up our furniture from Queens, **** and transfer this furniture to *****, ******* for an agreed upon price of $1,670 for 300cf, paying half on the pick up date, which was February 12, 2023, via Zelle. We dealt with a woman named ***************************. On the day of pickup, we "staged" the furniture in the dining room to prove the exact amount of cubic feet, i.e., ****** cf, to avoid any discrepancies or possible claims that we exceeded that amount of cubic feet. On the delivery date, February 24, 2023, we received an amended, and highly inflated, invoice which stated that the balance upon delivery was $2,020, instead of $850. This inflated amount was $1200 more than agreed upon. This bait and switch issue was not resolved before delivery. When the furniture arrived, the moving men expected to be paid the inflated price. We did not agree and argued the issue with *************************** who yelled and screamed that she didn't care to hear our complaint. She was unethical and unprofessional, to say the least. Ultimately, via Zelle, I paid an extra $238 for tolls and $187 for fuel over and above the balance of $850, only to find out the next day that the fuel was part of the original quote and that the tolls would be billed to my credit card account, thus double billing for the tolls. This company and its henchman, ***************************, should not be in business. I expect to be reimbursed for the gas $187, which was included in the original quote, and the company to issue a refund to my credit card company for $238 for tolls.
