Regarding invoice ***********
I have had a number of service issues with Roto Rooter. I have been trying to contact Mark A*********, Manuel D****, and Aurora R**** about my issues but they have been unresponsive.
First, hours worked are overstated. Overtime work was 1.25 hours, regular work was 2.5 hours. I'm not ok paying for commute time. On the first night, the technician (******) didn't even do any demo work even though I wanted him to. He chose to drive back the next day. Also, charging for commute was never disclosed to me.
This is the main problem: ****** did not explain that the machine was draining water in the laundry room. I never knew water was leaking and one day found the hose leaking water onto the floor. I don't know when it began leaking. The technician was there Saturday morning and I found the water Sunday afternoon. The water had leaked down into the ceiling below because there was a new moisture spot and the area that was being treated went from 10% moisture on Saturday morning to 15.8% on Monday (I have pictures from the technician).
There are a number of issues with ****** and Mark being unprofessional. Very disappointed with the service and communication. I can provide detail when contacted by RR.
Desired outcome:
1. Remove charge for 24 hours of use of the 2 kitchen machines since the ceiling got more moisture (Friday - Saturday) or 18 hours of these machines before demo was done.
2. Remove charge for 48 hours of use of the 4 laundry room machines since the ceiling got more moisture (Saturday - Monday)
3. Reduce total charge for new damage that was RR's fault. There appeared a new water spot on the ceiling in the pantry. I texted Mark A********* about this and he ignored me. I would like a $600 reduction of my bill for this.
4. When scheduling the appointment I was told that I would be charged $100 and if I had any work done, it would be credited to my bill. I paid the $100 to the plumber who came out and never received a credit.Business Response

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ** ********, and have determined that this does not resolve my complaint. For your reference, reasons for rejection are included below.Roto rooter did not contact me to resolve this. I had contacted them before explaining that ****** the technician did not explain to me that the dehumidifier was leaking water. He rushed and did not provide me details on what he was doing. Every time I saw him he complained that he had too much work to do and since he rushed in and out of my house so quickly I really didn’t have any idea the water was leaking or how the machines worked.

On March 1, 2023. I called Roto Rooter because an inspector had noticed a leaky pipe under my house. They sent a girl plumber out that was certified to go under house. I showed her pictures from inspector, but she said she had to wait until partner came to go under due to ********** law. She would not give me a written estimate. She said labor would be 400 dollars an hour. I thought it was high at that but knew I had to resolve leak. After she went under house , she told me it was not bad &water restoration was not needed &price would be alot less. She said she had to go to store for parts. She &partner left &came back &then said they bought wrong parts! They left again. Returned & said they only replaced 6 inches of pipe! They said it was ABS pipe , which is cheap. She wrote up bill & said I owed 3223.47! I asked how much was parts? She said they were expensive &over $300.00. She said she charged me 3.5 hours labor but bill showed 7 hours labor! She had charged me $400 per hour per person! She had not informed me of that at beginning. I was expecting 400 per hour total, not 800! I questioned her &said that she had not informed me of that. She just said sorry. She told me it was 1 year guarantee but marked paper 6 months. Then she said I just bought couple years! So it didn't even sound like they did a good fix! Left 5 messages on 5 different machines at company &no one returned my calls! I had another company check their work because I felt they may not have done good job. That company said parts would have been about $100 and total bill about $500. So Roto Rooter is grossly overcharging people! They are PRICE GOUGING! I WAS OVERCHARGED BY $2700! This is unacceptable. I paid the bill so they wouldn't put a mechanics lien on my house but their business practices need to be addressed. They charged 400/hr for second person to peer into crawl space in case repair person needed help & 800/hr for both of them to run to store! Refund due to me should be $2700!Business Response

Hello,
After detailed conversations with ******, it has been determined that there was a misunderstanding on the labor rate PER PERSON per hour. That said, Roto Rooter and ***. ******** have agreed upon a $1,400 refund to be issued to the customer. We have also conducted training on our with our team to help prevent such misunderstandings in the future.
Thank you,

My homes water main pipe was “repaired” July 2022 and is under a 1 year warranty, by Roto-Rooter in ***********. The pipe began to leak again and it took several weeks for them to fix the problem. They avoided my calls then, and are now avoiding my calls because I would like documentation of what was done the 2nd time and new warranty documents. The 2nd repair was done on 2/15/2023, i have called and left messages several times since then, asking them what was done and for a new warranty beginning on that day. Whenever I do get someone on the phone and they think I am a new customer, they guarantee someone will be out for repairs quickly, but the moment they realize I am under warranty, I am avoided. On several occasions, prior to the second repair, I was told a technician will be over to my home to assess the issue, and no one showed. I lost time from work because of that.Business Response

On March we had an agreement with Roto -Rooter to replace a crushed sewer pipe the cost would be $6,450 dollars. The company came around 10:00 that morning. It was at that my husband and I talked to James R.We discussed his job and that he was permitted to cut a brush back. He very willing agreed.Mr. proceeded with the job as my husband stayed in his truck that morning because he is undergoing chemo treatments. In the meantime Mr. broke our irrigation line which we are sure if it works correctly now.( He was suppose to have repaired it.) My husband grew tired and went inside the house and stayed their for the remainder of the job. Around 1:00 I arrived back home within a few minutes later there was a knock at the front door. It was Mr. **** trying to force me to sign the contact without looking at the job. I Insisted on looking at the job . I was totally shocked ! I refused to sign the contact but my husband did and gave him the check. I called mr. ****** boss about the problem he stated he was not response for the 30 year old healthy brushes. His second response was, he would send out one of his staff people to rake the grass. The damage to the yard was$2,000. Our homeowners insurance does not cover any damages. ******************* phone *** *** ***** Thank youBusiness Response

The first proposal was 9/23/22. Per the proposal They were to replace entire line outside home and picote restoration inside slab. The cost 12,971.00. They started the I thought completed the job with $9000.00 cash in hand. I was impressed they'd start the job without all the money. Of which I'm making payments on the remaining $2,171.00 The problem was sewage backing out the cleanout onto the yard. Todays date 3/13/23 and I have the same problem. Apparently, they know what the problem is but won't tell me the truth. I keep calling and i get "oh didn't anyone come by yet?" Or I get not response from my text. When the 15th rolls around I get a call to make a payment. I just purchased this home in July only to be stuck with poor and substandard plumbing.Business Response

This will require a phone call since there is so much information to my complaint. Original appt. 01/02/23 started with me being blown off by the company and I had to track them down for service. I wanted to stick with this company so they could reference prior work at my home. The first week ended up with multiple technicians at my home with my issue not resolved and in fact was made worse. After 4 days, I got a supervisor involved that explained I needed a new main sewer pipe which was $18,000. I put my faith and trust in their proposal and took on the project. They ended up breaking my water main in the process and after the new pipe was installed, I still had backup in drain in the basement. Then a hydrojet technician had to be sent the next day and a clog was discovered that was cleared. So, why did i have numerous unqualified technicians not discovering this clog for days and then their solution was the 18k project when in fact it was the clog discovered a day after the new pipe was put in? Now I'm back to this project again because the clean out drain in the front yard was installed crooked and it's too low in my yard and will be buried under dirt. Their backfill process is a mess as well. I called same supervisor again regarding this about 2 weeks ago and again, they are not calling back and I'm going to have to chase after them. As I mentioned in the beginning, there is so much to this story, all the stress I went through, time off of work, not be able to use water for days. Lots of negligence on their behalf, terrible service and recommendations for services not needed right away, them not being able to provide all the documents for the services that were done. I will gather what I have and try to upload attachments or I can provide via email if someone is going to get back to me or investigate this. Roto-Rooter has spoken with this customer directly regarding their concerns. We have explained the clog was located after the bellied section so it was only discoverable after the prior section was repaired. She understood.
Roto-Rooter also performed a site inspection immediately upon receiving this complaint and agree with the customer regarding the state of the cleanout placement. We will be returning to correct 3/15/2023 at no cost to the customer.

After a rainstorm at my rental property at *** ** **** ***, ********, IL, my young renter called me in ******* to say that the storm sewers in the area had backed up and there was water in the basement. He called Roto Rooter and had the technician, who was scaring him, speak with me on the phone.
Even though storm sewers had backed up throughout the neighborhood as happens there after torrential rain, the technician claimed that a pump needed to be replaced. He quoted me $1500 to include clean up of the basement and crawl space and I agreed. Later a second Roto Rooter technician called to say that I needed to replace a different additional pump and that the total would now be $2850. Although ejector pumps cost as little as $150 and sump pumps $250, Roto Rooter charged $1349.50 for them plus $1786 labor before subtracting $285.50 in repetitive charges.
After Roto Rooter left the job, my tenant informed me that even though the first technician promised a clean up, Roto Rooter had, despite replacing two pumps, failed to remove the standing water and did not clean up at all.
I attempted to resolve the dispute by calling Roto Rooter repeatedly on 2-10-23, and was routed through operators who were unfamiliar with the job and not local; eventually I was connected with the second technician who sold me the additional pump. He said despite the first technician’s agreement, there would be no cleaning and the bill stands at $2850.
I got a last minute flight to Illinois to clean the basement myself. I lost a renter due to Roto Rooter overstating the problem and scaring the renter to authorize service, then dishonoring its agreement to clean.
Roto Rooter overcharged for parts (if the pumps genuinely even failed) and did not perform the labor they said was included in the bid that induced my agreement. Between the loss of a renter and travel/cleaning expense due to Roto Rooter’s failure to honor its agreement to clean up alone, I am out over $2000.Business Response

To begin our response to this complaint it is imperative to
clarify, the City of Elmhurst does not have a combined storm and sewer system.
This means storm water and sewage drainage do not share a common city pipe.
This means storm run off does not affect sewage drainage for a resident as the
complaint is attempting to refer. To confirm, “torrential rain” does not cause
the City of Elmhurst sewers to backup into resident homes. Storm run-off and
sewer drainage are separate in the City of Elmhurst.
On 2/10/2023 Roto-Rooter was contacted due to a backup of the
basement floor drain at this property. A floor drain is part of sewer drainage,
not part of storm drainage. Roto-Rooter dispatched a rod technician suspecting
the backup was due to a blockage for which rodding would restore proper sanitary
flow. Once onsite this technician identified a sewage backup as the result of a
failed Ejector Pump. Ejector pumps only pump sewage, they have zero impact on
ground/storm water. This technician recommend a plumber to perform the pump
replacement to return proper sanitary flow.
It’s worth noting here, the Illinois Department of Public Health
requires all properties with human habitation to have proper sewer drainage – Section
890.170. Failure to have proper sewer drainage may result in the property being
held against plumbing code for the State of Illinois and may be condemned as
inhabitable.
Once the plumber was onsite, it was identified the sump pump
for the property had also failed. Sump pumps work solely on ground water, they
have zero impact on any sewage drainage.
Multiple pump failures result in multiple drainage issues
for this property. Roto-Rooter advising
on these conditions is not fear mongering as the complaint is attempting to
state but should be understood as service professionals responding to a service
request, advising on the current situation, and providing appropriate
recommendations to maintain the habitable condition of the property.
Included in this response is a copy of service contract
25-24797204. This contract details exactly the services authorized to be performed
by Roto-Rooter and the costs associated. As you can see in this contract there
is no statement of Mitigation (clean-up) services. It’s worth noting here, any/all
remediation performed by Roto-Rooter is directly in accordance with IICRC guidelines,
including Xactimate specification of service and correlated pricing. As this industry
is HIGHLY regulated, with the IICRC designating each service to be performed based
on the category of loss, at no point are remediation services included with repair
services. This is further evidenced by no inclusion of remediation on the signed
contract for service.
Additionally, regarding costs for service. Roto-Rooter is a
flat rate company, with corporate issuing pricing for technicians to follow
across the country. All costs are quoted and authorized before services are
rendered. Roto-Rooter pricing is separated by Residential (single family, owner
occupied residence) or Commercial (business, multi-unit residential property,
and/or rental properties). In this instance, the customer was billed the residential
rate as a courtesy vs the commercial rate. Residential Labor Rate to replace a
sump pump is $743, Commercial Labor Rate would have been $818. Residential Labor
Rate to replace an ejector pump is $1,043, Commercial Labor Rate would have
been $1,143. That is a savings of $175. Roto-Rooter also provides a “Multiple
Service” discount for customers completing more than one service in a visit.
This additional discount of $285.50 brings total discount for services to
$460.50.
Parts are billed with a standard 1.8 markup on cost. This
markup is a standard business practice from retail to service, even non-profit
organizations will mark up their cost of goods and services to offset operating
expense. Actual cost of parts for this service: $749.72.
To confirm, as contract for service solely details
replacement of both failed pumps and does not include any Xactimate specifications
for Water Remediation Services it is understood Roto-Rooter was not contracted
to perform any remediation or “clean-up” of this property; therefore, no refund/compensation
is due for the failure to perform these services. Additionally, labor costs for
services are accurate to Roto-Rooter pricing with discounts applied; therefore,
no additional discounts are warranted for these services. Further, cost of
parts have a mark up of 1.8. This is a standard business practice; therefore,
no refund/compensation is due for these costs.
It is unfortunate this property experienced multiple pump
failures resulting in multiple drainage issues; however, the property condition(s)
is not the responsibility of Roto-Rooter the service provider who arrived after the failures; therefore, any
loss of renter due to this property condition would remain the responsibility
of the property owner.
Roto-Rooter sympathizes with this property owner and understands
drainage failures are a frustrating situation, often costly to repair, but we
have performed all services as contracted and offered discounts at the time of
service. Regrettably, there is nothing further we can do to accommodate this
complaint and consider it closed. Please note: this service comes with a 1yr labor guarantee from Roto-Rooter which
will be honored.Customer Answer

Roto Rooter was dispatched to rod out the blocked sewer line. I am out of state and did not see the written contract that my tenant signed but I did speak with the Roto Rooter agent who was on site with the tenant while on speaker phone with my roommate and he clearly promised that clean-up was included in the bid to clear the line and replace the ejector pump. Only later when there was no cleaning done and I tried to resolve the issue with the company, did a different rep inform me that there would be no cleaning. Subsequently, when the problem resurfaced, did we learn form an independent plumber that Roto Rooter didn't even rod the sewer line to clear it. Nor did they install a working ejector pump. My tenants lost use of the laundry and downstairs toilet and I lost $1500 in rent. I had to fly up r to Illinois from Arizona to clean up, and another plumber had to rod out the line (bill attached). Roto Rooter had to be recalled to install a working ejector pump under its warranty. At this point, I am seeking a full refund.Initial Complaint

We called Roto-Rooter and a plumber came out the following day on Christmas Eve. Upon finding the crawl space flooded the plumber redirected me to their water damage department.
The manager of the department said he could come out on Sunday (Christmas Day), but later called me again saying Monday. I told him that I really wanted this taken care ASAP and that I was going to shop around for alternatives... The manager changed his mind and said he could find a crew for Sunday after all, but he couldn't secure a pump truck. He said that this was OK because he had alternatives.
Three people spent Christmas Day pumping water from the crawl space and dumping it into the sewer line clean out on the side of the house. At the end of the day they admitted that the water was going back in the crawl space because the sewer line was broken. On Monday a crew sat around the house until 4pm when Roto Rooter eventually secured a pump truck for proper extraction and removal of the standing water. After water removal they proceeded as planned with cleaning and drying as listed in the contract.
I think this was a deceitful behavior, wasting everybody's time just to get me to sign a contract with them while not addressing the problem.
Now let's talk about the contract.
The manager had me sign a contract ("work authorization") with an estimate ("xactimate") stating: "We estimate the total price we charge will be between $14,800 and $16,300, but the actual price will be based on our actual work and could exceed that estimate". Eventually they presented me with two bills totaling $24,489 for pumping water out of and sanitizing of the crawl space.
I think that this is also deceitful practice. The final price tag cannot be so far off from what is provided as an estimate at contract signing.
I told Roto-Rooter that that bill is unacceptable, but they do not appear to be hearing reasons.Business Response

Hello,
I can't find where I can add comments/updates to the complaint summary page, so I hope you can use this message as appropriate.
Following your communication with the business (Roto Rooter), I have been contacted by the GM by both email and phone.
The General Manager was very personable and has received my grievances. He has also proposed a bill adjustment in line with the original signed contract, and I have accepted to make a final payment accordingly.
I am grateful to the BBB for helping me reach a satisfactory resolution. Thank you!

Why choose a BBB Accredited Business?BBB Business Profiles may not be reproduced for sales or promotional purposes.
BBB Business Profiles are provided solely to assist you in exercising your own best judgment. BBB asks third parties who publish complaints, reviews and/or responses on this website to affirm that the information provided is accurate. However, BBB does not verify the accuracy of information provided by third parties, and does not guarantee the accuracy of any information in Business Profiles.
When considering complaint information, please take into account the company's size and volume of transactions, and understand that the nature of complaints and a firm's responses to them are often more important than the number of complaints.
BBB Business Profiles generally cover a three-year reporting period, except for customer reviews. Customer reviews posted prior to July 5, 2024, will no longer be published when they reach three years from their submission date. Customer reviews posted on/after July 5, 2024, will be published indefinitely unless otherwise voluntarily retracted by the user who submitted the content, or BBB no longer believes the review is authentic. BBB Business Profiles are subject to change at any time. If you choose to do business with this company, please let them know that you checked their record with BBB.
As a matter of policy, BBB does not endorse any product, service or business. Businesses are under no obligation to seek BBB accreditation, and some businesses are not accredited because they have not sought BBB accreditation. BBB charges a fee for BBB Accreditation. This fee supports BBB's efforts to fulfill its mission of advancing marketplace trust.
