This company towed my car from the parking lot at my apartment complex. I went to their yard to collect it and was told that if I could prove that I had a parking permit at the time of the tow, they would release it to me at no charge since it was their mistake. I verified this with two dispatchers in addition to the on-site employee with whom I initially met. After going home to obtain photographic proof of permission to park at my home, I went back to the yard to get my car. Although it was only 5pm, the gentleman who greeted me at the gate said that if I wanted my car it would cost me a $50 "gate fee" and if I waited until the following day they would assess a $100 "Lien Fee" at 4:00pm. I went home without my car but went back first thing in the morning to recover my vehicle. About a week later a Retriever tow truck shows up at my apartment claiming that my car was stolen from their yard and he begins hooking up my car to tow it. I instruct him to drop my car and advise him that my car was not stolen from their yard and that I'm the rightful owner. He refused to put my front-wheel drive car's rear wheels back down on the ground for 5 and a half hours. The driver even called a second tow truck to block my car in from the side. Eventually the police arrived and informed the Retriever guys that they couldn't legally tow my car and instructed them to drop it. The car was parked on a public right of way in compliance with every parking and traffic law and covered with a car cover, safe in the possession of the legal owner and holder of the title (me) at 9am the next day when they came back and towed it, anyway. What kind of company is told by the cops that they can't legally tow my car, but then does it a few hours later once the cops aren't around? They then towed it to a different location, much farther away than they're legally obligated to store it and immediately broke into it without my permission and called the police on me when I came to get my things.Business Response

Hello Sir
Your car was towed for a fake permit. You came to our lot at 143rd and ******** way you harassed the employees because you felt you should not have been towed and you were advised the reason for the tow was for the FAKE permit. You then waited until the yard was full of customers and went inside your vehicle and drove away. We do have all of this on camera, therefore you stole the car off of our lot without paying for your infraction of having a fake permit. Your care had since been reported as stolen. You then you painted the car and changed the plates .
You were in possession of a stolen vehicle sir and want everyone else to pay for your infractions .that is not how any of this works. You have to pay for the things you did wrong to retrieve your car as long as you can prove ownership and when all those things happen we will gladly give you the car .
thank you

Retriever Towing towed my girlfriends car from the parking lot at my apartment complex when she had a valid parking pass posted visibly in the correct location. Their predatory practices are damaging to vehicles and an extreme inconvenience to the victims of their conduct. We had to hire a Lyft ride to the tow yard and be rudely treated by their agent there. He tried to defend the tow saying the permit looked altered. The valid dates were from 3/28 for two weeks until 4/11. They claimed the 4 looked like a 3 when they towed the car in 3/29?!? So the pass was valid from 3/28 to 3/11 going back in time. Luckily we did the right thing and the pass was registered with the apartment complex. The property manager made them waive the charges even though their employee tried to justify it and lectured us about how they could still charge us like they did us a favor. How about not towing people with valid permits on some technicality? Are you that desperate for money that youre willing to damage peoples property and ruin their day? Yes you have power but you should think twice about how you use it.Business Response

In reviewing the copy of the permit you can see where the 3 was written over with a ****that does not look valid at all . Due to the poorly written permit was the reason for the tow. This is not predatory it was requested. Not sure what else to say here.Initial Complaint

I was driving off of 9th and Front Ave. at 8:05am this morning (03/06/23), when a tow truck jumped out in front of me. I honked my horn and went around him. The driver followed me all the way up to the garage door to my building's parking ********* got out of my vehicle and confronted him about following me he continued to harass me calling me multiple obscenities. He was a about 7 ft. around 250lbs. Latino male. Pretty uncalled for. Something should be done about this company. Maybe lose their business license or fire the employee. After further research I found that the BBB already knows about the multiple complaints and lawsuits occurring just within the last few months. Please act on thisBusiness Response

I received a bill for car towing for a vehicle that I sold in 2016, via *********** that was impounded by Retriever Towing. They had contacted me in 2019 regarding this impounding, stating my name was still registered to the vehicle. When I sold the vehicle, I submitted all paperwork through to the *** and contacted them following the initial contact from Retriever Towing. The *** told me they did not show that I was the current owner of the vehicle. I disregarded Retriever Towing and told them that this car was not mine anymore. The issue fizzled after multiple emails and calls with the towing company. On Feb 20, 2023, I received a letter in the mail from Retriever Towing that they had sold this vehicle at auction and this did not cover the impounding and towing fees previously accrued. This is a car I have not owned since 2016 and I believe Retriever Towing is wrongfully harassing me for money I do not owe.Initial Complaint

This company sent be bill from 2019 Regarding them towing the car and later selling it at auction. I however do not own this car and sold it on March 3, 2018. I have my bill of sale as proof. There was also a parking ticket by this car dismissed by multonomah county under my name because I had documentation showing that I had sold it, but for some reason this towing company believes this is my responsibility to pay this ***** bill. They said they allegedly notified me of this when I havent heard anything from them until this letter came today regarding this bill. This is a terrible company and I will be taking them to court if this is not resolved. I have called them multiple times and have received to answer.Business Response

My car was towed on 11/14/2022 from a business parking lot. I live in my car and I had all my belongings in it. When it got towed and was in the possession of retriever towing it was broken into and many of my belongings were taken as well as my gas being taken. I have been trying to get retriever towing insurance information but they refuse to give me any information and refuse to answer any of my emails.Initial Complaint

I woke up to a tow truck outside and a man by our car at 5am. I immediately rush outside and ask the man to stop before he could hook it up. He asked how long I had lived there and I told him two days. His first lie was telling me that he would be able leave and report it as a "Release at Scene" as long as I had the keys. I said I did and stepped inside to grab them and when I went back out, he finished hooking it up and was starting down the road. I ran and found him stopped in the middle of the road where he then told me I would have to pick it up from the tow yard. This individual's second lie was telling me that if I picked up my vehicle within an hour, it would be at a discounted cost but couldn't tell me what he cost was. I asked for any paperwork on my vehicle he might have to help with the process and the tower refused. I quickly rushed back home and explained everything to my girlfriend, *********, who had her mother come pick her up to retrieve the vehicle since I had to start work shortly after. After eventually locating the establishment, though conveniently hidden, Leahgrace was told that someone told me to schedule an appointment, which was lie #3. She called the location and was told "Hi please hold" and was immediately placed on hold. Not illegal, just bad customer service. She was then told by two separate people that there was no rule on releasing a vehicle within an hour and that we'd have to pay the full amount of $440. She was then told the itemized amounts would be on the receipt of the payment. It says "5 miles @ $8 EA." "Gate Fee" is checked. And "Fuel Fee $15". Firstly, that doesn't equal $440. Second, it's only 4 miles, not 5. ****** has it at 4.3 so it's not like someone rounded, lie #4. From my understanding, Gate Fees are assessed when pulling the car out after hours but we were only there before hours because the tower told us we had to go within an hour, otherwise, we could have waited the couple hours and saved us the extra money.
