Berkheimer says they are a tax collection business, but they also appear to have NO direct information concerning PA tax filings. They seem to arbitrarily seek information and tax collection on "the behalf" of so-called local authorities. If one tries to access their account on Berkheimer's website, which they say you should pay online on the letters they send via US postal, it is impossible to access or pay because they require a "Bill Number" that is not listed on their letters, which ARE NOT mailed via Certified mail. They seem like a scam. They then add Late Fees, when it's impossible to know why/what I'm paying, and even if I did pay online (which they ask for us to do), they do NOT provide the specific information to even log into an account. I'm not sure if this is a phishing attempt, scam, or they simply want to make it as difficult as possible to pay in order to run up Late and Service Fees. But one thing is clear, this is NOT a legitimate business, and if they are official tax collectors, then they need to be sending Certified Letters.Business Response

I was a resident of Allentown, PA (Lehigh Valley). In August 2014, I relocated from PA to North Carolina. When I received a tax invoice, I paid the bill in full. My financial responsibility to the city/county was ended. I received absolutely no correspondence from PA until early September 2022 - an invoice from Berkheimer Tax Innovations demanding tax payment and delinquent fees for the years 2014 - 2018. The total demanded = $157.50. I immediately called Berkheimer to state the fact that I had paid 2014 taxes and relocated same year from the state, owing PA nothing in taxes. After several phone calls and submission of an exoneration form, on 10/26/22 I spoke with a representative who informed me they were discounting the total to charge me a total of $94.50. This is unacceptable! Because I do not have my receipt for 2014, I am willing to REPAY the taxes for that year ($21.00) & applicable late fees. However, I do not believe that I should pay late fees or any other charges for 2015-2018 which are years for which I did not reside in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Again, I stress that I have never received any type of correspondence throughout those years until receiving this statement dated 8/30/22. I have resided at the one and same address since moving to NC in 2014, which is the address Berkheimer has on file from the payment I made in 2014 (although they report no record of the payment). I seek assistance in settling this matter in a fair and equitable manner.Business Response

Better Business Bureau:I have reviewed the response made by the business about complaint ID ******** and find that I will accept this resolution.Although the official response from Annette G************** at Berkheimer Tax Innovations remains less than satisfactory (I feel that I am being charged an elevated amount of "late fee fines" to my account), I will accept to close this case. She indicated that my right to privacy allowed me certain rights, remedies, and appeals to resolve disputes directly with Berkheimer. Of course, when I attempted to settle the matter with them directly, I received resistance to receiving a fair outcome. Thus, I requested assistance from BBB. Although I do not fully agree with the final amount charged, I will accept the offer as I want to finalize this open case with Berkheimer Tax Innovations.Thank you for your assistance in this matter.Regards,

Berkheimer Tax Innovation has been sending my wife and me threatening letters since 2020 about our 2018 tax returns. There is a minor discrepancy on what the state supplied them where all we need to do is share our W2s and tax returns to clear up the issue. Still, for many reasons, they say they can't see the standard PDF documents we have sent them but they can see 2019 which had a similar discrepancy on their end. We received a certified letter threatening wage garnishment on October 24, 2022. We spoke to a rep and faxed and emailed the supporting documents yet again on October 24, 2022. The issue is we get different directions from each rep on what information will clear up the discrepancy. The due date for the bill is November 6 and we are currently awaiting feedback from a local lawyer. This company has hundreds of negative and 1-star reviews and has a ******** page dedicated to their unscrupulous practices. Please help us and the residents of PA deal with their manipulative practices.Business Response

Berkheimer has continuously attempted to collect payments from both my husband and myself that have already been paid. I have sent bank records and attempted to fill out dispute claims on their mess of a website with NO responses from them. Every letter they send they add on more and more fees without ever responding to our inquiries. We’ve stopped trying to argue and just pay the bills and then they send MORE bills for other random taxes from years ago, claiming difference in submitted wages and state taxes. This year they have been attempting to bill us again for 2 Boros in PA we no longer reside or own property in, we’ve moved out of the area entirely. They’ve been harassing us with these bills for years and every bill they send is a different account number, making it nearly impossible to track what has/has not been paid. This business needs to be SHUT DOWN.Business Response

As you can review on their website, I am one of many this company has targeted, they have many awful reviews. They garnished my wages at a former employer and when I called asking for proof I hadn’t paid and said I would have an atty review it they stopped garnishing but failed to return the amount taken and the embarrassment of contacting my employer at the time. They started sending bills again this year and each one was higher with penalties and no one answers the phone when I’m able to take quick breaks at work. I have just received another letter from my current employer that my wages are being garnished again and a letter from Berkheimer claiming it’s from 2014?! Again, embarrassed my work thinks I don’t pay taxes and beyond sick that they send certified letters claiming I owe money and make up numbers with penalties or service fees that are not proven from 8 years ago??? I am sick of being a target of theirs and you can see multiple people have similar reviews on their website that it seems a total scam. I have never not worked, never in my life received an unemployment check or assistance, worked straight through Covid , and will NOT let some company that won’t even answer their phone take my hard earned money. I sent a letter to berkeimer along with the tax bill stating that was not my job and also that the bill was in *********************** name. I did tell them the house was sold by the ***** agency and everything was properly documented at the court house. I just hope the new owners does not get penalized for being late on this bill. They wait 2 years to notify you that you tax paperwork was never received so you end up paying an exorbitant amount of money for a filing that would they have received it, they would owe you money. The customer service people are rude and due them being agents of the state they tend the bureaucrat gang you to pay knowing it will cost you more time in money in the long run to fix the issue they created. There are millions of people that live in pa and yet some how if a filing doesn't reach them through the mail they are never at fault and wait 2 years to deal with itBusiness Response

I am submitting a complaint of unfair business practices of Berkheimer tax innovations. Last year without any notice a per capita tax was added. It appeared to be a duplicate of a per capita tax being charged by the township. Berkheimer in the past tried to claim I was deliquent in paying local taxes which I did not owe due to a move to a different county. I admit fault in not further clarifying that this was a new fee and we were now expected to pay 2 separate per capita fees. Their tax form says $9.80 if paid by 10/1/21, $10 if paid before 11/30/21, and after 11/30/21 $11. No notice was made of this tax still being owed until this August (1 year after the inital letter). The $11 then turned into $36. They did not perform due dillegence in making initial notification of 2 separate taxes being owed nor in attempting to collect sooner to mitigate damages. I paid the $72 plus the $2 for processing fee for myself and my husband to avoid being late on the new due date, but feel the $11 ($22) that was originally stated should have been the correct fee. I had emailed back and forth with a ******, Customer Care Specialist, who cited 2004 Act 192, as reasoning for being able to charge this fee. That act states they may "collect a reasonable fee". I'm not sure how $25 fee on an $11 tax is reasonable. Thank you for any help you can provide.Business Response
