I signed up for what I believed to be a one-month subscription with iStockphoto. At checkout, there is a warning that the "subscription will automatically renew," so I made sure after I signed up to uncheck the auto-renew box. It turns out iStockphoto locked me in for a YEAR and is charging me every single month despite the auto-renew box (because it interprets auto-renewal for the ***** not for the month). I never would have chosen this option had I known that it was a full year. I only needed 10 downloads total, if that. The "How do I cancel a subcription" FAQ says: "For subscriptions that are not part of the free trial, all requests for cancellations must be made in writing through our contact us email form," suggesting cancellation is possible. Given the number of other complaints about iStockphoto here, they seem to be preying on unwitting customers. Email exchanges with iStockphoto have not been fruitful.Business Response

********** signed up for a yearly subscription on December 29th, 2023, without opting for a free trial. By doing so, she accepted the terms and conditions associated with the subscription. Since then, she has downloaded three images. We've made sure to inform her about our cancellation policy and provided her with instructions on how to disable the auto-renew feature. This ensures that her subscription won't renew automatically at the end of the subscription period. For more details, you can find our cancellation policy clearly outlined in our license agreement at ********************************************************************************.Customer Answer

I am rejecting this response because as many customers have complained before, the terms do not appear clearly. Im attaching the part of the *** that suggests cancellation IS possible. I would like to cancel and am more than happy to destroy the 3 images I downloaded, which I would not have sought had I known you were locking me into a nearly $400 contract.

Based on our records, ********** signed up for an annual subscription. He selected a 10 image download per month annual plan. Since the completion of the transaction, ********** has continued to download images, as he is *********** do under a paid subscription. His latest download was on January 25th. Thus, ********** is clearly using the product that he selected and paid for. Nevertheless, we understand that circumstances change, and customer satisfaction is our highest priority. We have determined to cancel Mr. **** subscription effective February 22nd, 2024. This decision was made notwithstanding the information we provide clearly states that after billing commences, cancelation is not possible until the end of the committed period. We also advise customers via the confirmation email sent at registration, as well as in our Content License Agreement. This policy is clearly outlined in the FAQs. While we firmly believe that sufficient information is clearly provided to allow for an informed decision to be made by customers, iStock, recognizes the need to be agile in the way that we administer our programs which may involve making changes to them that further benefits the customer as well as making it an overall successful program.Customer Answer

Hi - I was so pleased that, in response to my complaint, iStock offered to cancel my subscription as of Feb. 22, 2024. It turns out that they did not, however, do so, and they instead charged me for another month today (see "Feb. 29 iStock additional charge.pdf"). I emailed to ask them to please cancel the subscription as promised, and I received a response that they would not do so and that my account would continue to be charged through December, despite their promise through the Better Business Bureau process (see "Feb. 29 iStock email.pdf").
I would not have closed my complaint had I thought iStock was lying about cancelling my subscription. Could you please help?
Thank you very much.

We apologize there was an additional billing. We can confirm, however, that the annual subscription was canceled and we processed a refund for $29.00 on March 18th because of the additional billing. We can also confirm there will be no additional charges to this customer's credit card.

Thank you for reviewing this complaint. I started my free trial with iStock by Getty Images on December 24, 2023. Unfortunately, I've also fell victim to not checking off of the predatory "auto-renewal" for an annual subscription (through monthly payments) of $85 CAD per month + tax, with a yearly total of $850 CAD + tax to iStock's service, having forgotten about this trial (on an "iStock Premium 10 - 1 Year" plan). I downloaded a total of 5 image assets during the free trial. I have not used the service in any capacity after the free trial was up, and will not be using this service in the future. I had contacted iStock immediately after payment of the first $85 CAD requesting subscription cancellation & a full refund through the support/inquiry page in "Contact us" (Payment went through on January 24th, **** at 7:04AM, my inquiry was confirmed received at 7:26AM that day). When attempting to call iStock's contact number, you'll receive a notice that they do not handle subscription cancellations over the phone (as others have mentioned). Upon receiving a reply the next business day, I was instead offered the ability to cancel my subscription early if I agree to paying "half the remaining amount of your full subscription value" which is $425 CAD as an administration fee, which is obviously exorbitantly high. iStock will say "the information we provide clearly states that after billing commences, cancellation is not possible until the end of the committed period". While this is indeed true, this is written in fine print, there are no email reminders you are provided that service will renew, and there is no sense of ethical and responsible practice in terms of allowing customers to cancel the service free of charge, providing a full refund, when there is no intention of service continuation, and the service has not been used at all after the free-trial period. I will be grateful for your help in this case.Business Response

I signed up for a free month trial with iStock photos by Getty images on Nov 29, 2023 intending to cancel the subscription before Dec 29. I neglected to cancel the trial prior to Dec 29 and was charged $89.25 on that date for the monthly charge. When attempting to cancel the subscription, which I thought was monthly, on Jan 24,2024, I was told that a $425 fee was required to cancel the subscription apparently because it was a yearly subscription. I had no knowledge that it was a yearly subscription. They say they will charge me $89.25 for 11 further months and I am unable to stop the charges unless I pay them the $425.Business Response

I signed up for a free iStock account. I downloaded 1 image during the trial period. At the end of the trial period I set a calendar invite and used the option to cancel. The website appeared to register the cancellation, however the following monday I was informed that I had been charged the first month of payments which would continue for another 11 months. I immediately contacted iStock to inform them of this and was informed that they would cancel the subscription for a 'fair' price of 425 CAD. In researching online it appears this is quite a common occurrence of both those that tried to cancel and failed or forgot to to cancel and were locked in. Some have had luck cancelling through multiple emails.Business Response

I signed up for a "free trial" with istock. I never received confirmation of my free trial, or what I had signed up for (i.e subscription details, pending payment dates, amounts). I found one "welcome" email, as well as payment confirmation emails once they'd taken money from me ($93.50 AUD). iStock have locked me into a 12 month contract and will not cancel my subscription unless I pay half the remaining yearly amount, which they have quoted as $425 AUD. I have emailed them multiple times to help me but they have not been helpful. I want immediate cancellation of my subscription as well as a refund of money they have taken from me without my knowledge and express consent.Business Response

Dear members of BBB,I would like to seek your assistance on resolving a dispute that I have with iStockphoto LP. On December 20, 2023, I singed up for a "free trial" with iStockphoto and cancelled it after downloading one single file. Please note that I did not receive any confirmation and/or receipt regarding my subscription at all (let alone within 15 days), unlike how Business Practices and Consumer Protection Act or Consumer Contracts Regulation outline. The only way to "guess" my trial start date was to find the download date of the file mentioned above. Now iStock charged ***** CAD to my card and locked me into their annual subscription that forces me to pay ****** CAD more in next 10 months. Additionally, I did not receive any reminder notification before my account switching into the paid subscription. When I contacted them via email, they wanted the half of the annual subscription fee of ****** + tax CAD paid at once to cancel the subscription. I do not think that this was a fair contract between the business and I, and wishes to get the paid amount refunded and cancel the subscription.I hope BBB can aid iStickphoto LP and I to settle this dispute in a peaceful and professional matter. My customer number is ********.Business Response

To whom it may concern, Thank you for taking the time to review my case. I signed up for a free trial with iStock by Getty Images on November 21, 2023; however, they set my Subscription as Auto-Renew, so after the free trial ended, I was automatically enrolled into their 12-month Subscription which was totally against my wishes. I had tired to cancel during the free trial, and found the process difficult. With the busiest of December, I assumed it was cancelled. On Dec *******, I was charged 96. 05 which made me realize it was not cancelled. I immediately emailed them through their website asking for them to properly cancel my subscription immediately and refund the money they had taken. I never heard back from the them until Jan 21. **** when they had the nerve to charge me another *****. (I think its fraudulent to ignore my first cancellation email only to charge me again in January) I immediately contacted PayPal and they have refunded one payment for Dec and the second is still being reviewed, waiting for Getty Images to respond. I once again contacted this company and demanded they cancel my subscription immediately without charge and refund my January fee and they came back with that I either continue on their 12-month subscription or I have to pay half the remaining amount of the full 12-month subscription value which would be CAD 382.50.I felt I was tricked into their subscription and paying the monthly fee, and I don't think this is ethical or reasonable, I would like them to cancel my subscription immediately without any further charge and refund my fees. I have not used this service ONCE since the first charge on Dec 21st. Thank you again for your help with my case, I hope to hear from you soon.Business Response

I signed up with istock photos for a free trial run. I ment to cancel the subscription because I ended up not needing it but I forgot. I got charged $70 dollars but didn't notice it until a few weeks later.I let that one go but decided that I would cancel my subscription before the next billing cycle because I can't afford it. I called istock on January 19th ( one day before I would be charged again. They Rep informed me that they can not under any circumstances cancel anything over the phone & that I have to cancel via email. He also informed me that since I contacted them before my billing cycle "they should be able to refund me my money ". 2 days later I was still charged another $70 *********** received an email response saying that I signed up for a 1 year subscription for $700 dollars (which I did not see when i signed up, it was an honest mistake) & that i will not be refunded plus they would charge me another $70 to cancel my subscription? So I called them again today 1/22/24 to inform them about the email. I stated that I just wanted to speak to a real human to help me in this situation. He informed me that he could not do anything at all, so I asked to speak to a *************** basically acted like there was no one directly that I could speak to at the moment & that he would have to email some team of people. He made it seem like a long process. He told me that the only thing I could do was to respond to the email they sent & that they "may make an exception for me"? I told him that I can't afford this & that I felt like they were giving me the run around. ******* can't help me over the phone & the email is saying that the only way that they can help me is to charge me more money?!Business Response

On October 20, 2023 I commenced what I believed to be a free one-month trial with iStock, ultimately only using the trial service on one occasion. I received no details of this transaction that stated after the conclusion of the one-month trial, I would be locked into a years-long contract with no ability to terminate. Furthermore, no attempts from iStock were made to remind me the free trial was ending and I was ultimately charged in November 20, 2023 for $70 as the first month of a 12 month subscription. Upon reviewing the charge in my credit card statement, I immediately (on November 20, 2023) reached out to iStock via phone and email to seek a refund and cancel the subscription as I did not consent to these terms. Multiple attempts to cancel the subscription were made, and after several attempts to contact the company via phone and email, I was only ever able to speak with an entry level customer service agent who was not able to offer any helpful information or resolution. To date I have now been billed a total of $210 and would like to be refunded this amount in addition to the cancellation of the remaining and any future subscription.Business Response

I only signed up for the "free trial" on December 11, 2023 to download 1 photo, then was told that I missed the window to cancel because disabling "auto renew" in my account does not discontinue the trial. I was then charged $70 for the first month on January 11, 2023, via an auto-deduction from my payment account. I accepted that and went ahead and used my remaining credits on the site since I had already been charged for them anyway. Then I emailed the company to cancel (and explained missing the window) and was told I was now committed to a full year at $70 per month, or I could pay a $70 DOLLAR "administrative fee" for canceling. This is an exorbitant amount to simply cancel a subscription that I will no longer be using. Upon further investigation of this company, which I regret not doing prior to signing up, I have found that this is a regular issue with this company. Their advertisements are intentionally misleading, as is made clear by the amount of negative reports made against them online. This is a scam and will continue to be reported as such. I have attached the first invoice, which I must say is worded in a way that says the invoice includes a 1-Year ("Duration: 1 Year") subscription, Unit price $0.00, Total due $0.00 which conflicts with their terms.Business Response
