I have two issues with Truthfinder. The first is they have my information online without my consent. There are no real regulations about ethics, privacy or whether this company has to disclose that they were fined by the SEC for failing to disclose how inaccurate their reports are when they sold them to employers, customers and other businesses for background checks. Ill include that at the bottom for clarity sake so everyone can read it for themselves. I mean. Its publicly available and online, correct? The other issue is they have my name and info, but they have about a half dozen aliases that arent me, my name or my information. Ive never used them. Im assuming its there because there is no effort to very accuracy or MAYBE those other people have a more colorful background than I do. So it makes selling MY background report so someone a lot more likely. Now, before Truthfinder responds with that canned remove it yourself, click on the link? I attempted to remove it online and its not straightforward. They also want me to verify all my information. Which Im thinking theyll either sell somewhere. You screwed it up? You remove it. I dont trust you. Heres the *** fine I mentioned earlier. ***************************************************************************************************************************************************************************Business Response

On 16 August 2023, I had cancelled and received a confirmation cancellation email from Truthfinder. On 12 September 2023, I was billed $28.05 twice (total $56.10) for a Truthfinder account. When I called on 20 September 2023, I was told that I was billed for some add on feature. The lady said that she only saw where I was billed once for the add on feature, therefore she gladly refunded $28.05, which was back in my account on 21 September 2023. I asked about the second charge, she stated she only saw the one charge. I asked for an email address to send a screenshot of my account, that was definitely charged twice. I then received another email reply addressing other things and nothing regarding the second charge. I want the rest of my money returned. Someone somewhere has my money because it definitely isnt in my account!Business Response

Purchased a month worth of membership and was immediately locked out of the account and denied access. Monthly amount or ***** plus a PDF download fee of **** (which is a ridiculous thing to charge extra for) were already billed and cleared on my credit card, but I cannot access the account to see the reports I was looking at. If the company is unable to offer the services they are billing me for, by locking the account the same day it is created, the charges on my credit card will be considered fraudulent and I will promptly dispute them if the charges are not reversed.Business Response

This website aggregates information that is not particularly easy to find or compile and aggregates them so that all your personal information pops up when you searcg a person's name. Aggregating this information and posting it so that all the places I've lived, my relative's names, addresses, phone numbers, etc. come up first thing in a ****** search is a huge invasion of privacy and a security and safety concern. Truthfinder does not provide an easy or straight forward way to remove your profile from their site. They want you to submit a "suppression request" and will only approve it if you can show that you have access to the email or phone accounts that they think you own. As such, I was not able to complete this request for myself or my spouse via the "suppression request." I think it's important to note that this is a for profit company, not a public or mandatory service. They pay for people's information so that they can post it and then get others to pay to access it. I should not need to jump through hoops before this third party company will take remove my information that THEY chose to buy, aggregate, and post. Every other similar for-profit company/website that compiles and posts individuals' personal information has an opt-out option on their website that does not require additional information to be submitted. These companies are all so gross and should be illegal, but this one takes the cake. It's slanderous to post flags on people's profiles stating that an individual has criminal records when they absolutely do not. They need to remove the profiles that I've attached to this request ASAP.Please have Truthfinder remove and delete the attached *********************** personal information from truthfinder.com website and their database.Business Response

I am requesting help with canceling an unwanted subscription and getting a refund on subscription fees I did not agree to. In March 2022, I paid for one-time service from Truthfinder and *************** both of which provide services searching for information. I did not sign up for a monthly, ongoing subscription service or identity protection services. After I used the service one time, I did not require their services anymore and thought no more of the matter. I have never once their services after that one time. Several months later, I checked my Amazon credit card (CHASE bank) history and discovered that Intelius was billing $29.95 and Truthfinder was billing me $28.05 and $3.99 every month since March 14, 2022. I had no idea what these charges were for. I stopped my credit card to got a new card. After that, I believed the matter was resolved. Last month, I checked my new Amazon credit card history and discovered they are still charging the same monthly bills. I contacted CHASE bank and reported both Intelius and TruthFinder as fraudulent charges, and requested that CHASE block them from withdrawing funds. ***** cancelled my card and issued a new card again on 9/7/2023. After that, on 9/7/2023, I received an email from Intelius and TruthFinder stating that my subscription was canceled. However, on 9/7/2023, I suddenly received a series of charges against my new credit card from Intelius and TruthFinder, totaling $225.84. ***** has not been able to cancel or refund the charges. I am requesting that this subscription, which I never signed up for, be canceled, and all charges against me be refunded, especially the charges that were billed AFTER Intelius and TruthFinder sent me confirmation of the cancellation of my subscription.Business Response

I am filing this complaint on behalf of my 79 year old Mother-******** ******** who now lives with me under my care. I filed for Power of Attorney as she's been cognitively compromised & confused for quite some time & can no longer live independently. She was living in subsidized housing for the elderly as she meets the poverty level guidelines. In taking over her finances I became aware that Truthfinder was charging my Mother $30.40 2x a month for a total of $60.80 month for two separate memberships since October 2022. My Mother has no recollection of signing up for a membership or using these services. If she did use the service one time initially, she was not capable of understanding and was vulnerable to the predatory practice of deceptive advertising to think this was a one time payment with no obligation. I have called and spoken with TruthFinder 4x since 9/13 asking for them to cancel her memberships (which they did) and to credit back to her banking account the charges for the past six months as a reasonable measure on their part to right this wrong and be ethically compliant. On the first call the representative said he understood and would refund the $364.80 back to her checking account but couldn't because I had canceled the debit card. I learned from my bank they can. On the next call the representative told me again they couldn't refund it due to canceled debit card and I would need to file fraud complaint with bank which I did. The 3rd call the representative stated I would need the bank on the line to verify that there were two charges each month because they only see one. My bank did a three way call on my 4th call to TruthFinder but they put us on hold for so long, bank had to get off. Then when I spoke with TruthFinder next they stated they couldn't do a call with bank on phone for security purposes--can't credit back due to canceled card. This is an eldery person on fixed income meeting poverty line. Bank states they can credit back the money.Business Response

**What is important to be taken into account is that this an elderly 79 year old person without full cognitive capacity to give consent or understand what was being asked of her. Your business can make the ethical choice to right this and refund back six months of twelve months of charges--in which she was charged 2x a month. She lives on a fixed income in subsidized housing. Your records will show this person never used your service--got a one report but didn't open it because she does not understand how to use a computer and has not been able to use her email for several months nor tracking her checking account to see the charges. ***

TruthFinder's response is just more of the same false statements they have made before. It is absolutely not true that TruthFinder cannot refund back to the Visa. I have had the bank on the phone 3x with them to correct them on this. This is part of their deceptive practices and illegal activities. Other merchants refunded back to the Visa card successfully even though the card was canceled due to fraudulent charges. Turthfinder CAN refund back to the card and they fully know this. They also can execute a check for a refund through their own bank should they really want to resolve the situation and right this wrong. Due to TruthFinder's continual deceptive practices and exploiting the elderly, I have retained the services of a law firm who will be in contact with them. I also am in the process of filing a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Justice for California where their business resides. Taking advantage of the Elderly is not tolerated in our country; part of why the Senate passed legislation in recent years protecting the elderly and making it a federal crime to financially exploit this population. I will no longer go through BBB as I can see TruthFinder has no intention of resolving the issue and is a threat to vulnerable populations. BBB--Read their reviews on your site. Their refusal to refund money is nothing new. Taking advantage of people is nothing new. I plan to hold them accountable. No need for TruthFinder to respond to this. Just wanted them to know the next legal steps I am in process of taking.
