Road Runner Sports has been charging me every year for a VIP membership that I have not authorized. I have called and canceled numerous times. I have to do it every year! They refund the money and claim auto-renewal has been canceled, but every year, like clockwork, there is another charge. They simply keep your information on file, reset you to auto-renewal, and hope you don't recognize the charge on your bank statements the following year. This amounts to theft and really should be investigated by the authorities, but at the bare minimum, they should have the worst possible rating from the BBB. The sums of money they have stolen from consumers who don't check their statements must be massive. There is significant evidence of this dishonest business practice from legions of others as well. My only hope is they go out of business so I can stop finding fraudulent charges and canceling on a yearly basis.Business Response

Records show that *************** did cancel his membership in Nov 21 and at that time, the agent did not correctly cancel the membership,therefore the membership did renew in Jan 22 at *****. It is not the intent for Road Runner to charge you for a membership you are not able to take advantage of. We apologize for that human error. ***************** contacted us on 1.7.23 and our agent should have looked closer at the account, however, with the renewal date being in this month Jan 23, there may have been some confusion. We will follow up with the agent *************** spoke to on 1.7.23. We apologize for any confusion surrounding the renewal. *************** can feel confident we have cancelled the renewal from Jan 22. He will see two refunds. One for $5 and the other for $54.99, totally *****, the charge of the renewal fee at that time. Road Runner Sports does reserve the right to update our Club policys at any time per our website/club benefit details. At the time of ***************** renewal from last year, there had not been any updates. Again, we feel this is a date/year confusion on our agents part. *************** can rest assure he will not be billed moving forward for the membership unless he chooses to opt back in.

For several years, I have been charged an annual subscription of $49.99, which I have never agreed to. When attempting to cancel, I get the runaround and was cut off by the agent after I expressed my frustration with them. They basically don't want to hear about their unethical and practices. Records show that *********** was able to successfully cancel and get a $49.99 refund for the 2022 renewal on 12.28.22. Our records also indicate *********** grew frustrated with our agent and our agent had to disconnect the call per our agents notes on the account. This is the first year we have charged $49.99 for the *** membership level *********** was at. We do see *********** was renewed in 19, 20 and 21 at our ***** renewal rate. As *********** did not take advantage of any membership benefits during this time, we will also be refunding those years. Road Runner sports does reserve the right to update our membership policies at any time.

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID ********, and find that this resolution would be satisfactory to me. I will wait for the business to perform this action and, if it does, will consider this complaint resolved.To be clear, I didn't become frustrated with the agent; he didn't like my report of the duplicitous nature of their charges. He was very aggressive about wanting to end the call and refused to listen to my complaints about earlier charges, which I am told are being removed. If so, this will be satisfactory. I was highlighting the repetitive nature of these charges when he decided to cut me off.
An even better resolution would be if Road Runner (where I used to buy a lot of product) would make it clearer to customers and get a true opt-in to their subscription. The deception in signing me (and many others) up for subscriptions is what had turned me from being a somewhat regular customer (both in-store and online) to a non-customer. Frankly, I am afraid I will buy something and get opted into a subscription, making it difficult to cancel. I was expressing this sentiment to the agent when he cut me off, in a peremptory fashion, which I didn't find satisfactory at all. They need to train their agents to listen to and heed this feedback. He didn't understand nor want to hear the depth and duration of the problem that I have experienced with Road Runner. Without that kind of listening, Road Runner will lose customers.

I was a member in 2012. I ordered a few things several years ago. I then ceased my membership. Last year in December 2021 I was charged a membership fee I did not request nor did I approve of. December 21st- I visited the store to shop for my husband and kids. Were all runners and have frequented the store over the years. I was asked by the young woman who said she was covering the clothing area whether I needed help- she asked twice in the span of 3 minutes. I thanked her both times and informed her that if I did, I would reach out to her. Every step or turn I made, she was there. In essence, I was being followed around the store. I happen to be a 58y.o. Black woman who is also a physician and a **** at a medical school in Los ngeles. In addition to seeing patients, I am a medical educator who teaches students about racism and implicit and explicit bias. When I shared with the young woman that it was clear to me that she was following me, she responded by saying ** doing my job. I find this puzzling, but upon further reflection, it is clear to me that she was likely trained to do this. I would implore you to train your employees in anti- racist and anti-bias behaviors. Upon reviewing ***************** account, she does frequent our store often and knows we can do better. We do have agents stationed in each of our departments to help and be proactive in asking our customers if they need help. Sounds like we over helped and we apologize. We should have done a better job in listening to *************** when she let us know she would reach out when she was ready. *************** should not have felt followed and again, we apologize that was the case. *************** can count on us to follow up with our stationed agents along with our ENTIRE team surrounding this experience so we can continue to improve across the board. *************** has also sent us a video about her experience and we will also use the message as a training opportunity for the team.

Roadrunner Sports is likely not following appropriate credit card financial practices and offering poor customer service.1. Credit card policies that likely do not comply with financial regulations. - Store credit card numbers without consent.- Do not make the customer aware which credit card numbers ********************** is storing.- Using the stored credit card numbers to renew membership fees without consent of using the credit card for the transaction.2. Used that credit card number to auto-renew for their annual membership. The representative stated that if I use a credit card online or at retail location the number is added to my membership and can be used charge for renewal. Mislead the customer as to which credit card numbers ********************** is storing. The website shows incorrect or misleading credit card information. One of my credit cards, which is not listed on the RoadRunner Wallet section of their website was used to renew the annual membership without my consent. Roadrunner confirmed that the credit card number they used to auto-renew my membership did not match the credit card numbers that I have physically in hand today. They credit card numbers have not changed in the last 3 weeks since RoadRunner made the transaction. Representative stated that the annual membership consent would have been verbal at a retail store. She could not show any type of written approval by me. No advance notice or warning email stating that they would be charging my account for renewal was sent. Records show that ***************** actively shops with Road Runner Sports. We apologize if the membership renewal caught him off guard. As ***************** signed up in our retail location, the credit card information for the renewal is encrypted for ******************* security. ***************** should know at the bottom of our Retail receipts when signing up, the membership renewal information is there. Any credit cards ***************** may have put in his online account would have had to be manually added. We do not have access to ******************* online account for his security. ***************** is able to cancel his membership at any time via online email, over the phone or at any time he stops by our retail location to shop. We apologize if this was not explained better. We understand ***************** will be reaching back out to us at his convenience, to provide the credit card number so we can ensure the refund goes thru. Should ***************** decide to rejoin at a later date, or during his next visit to our retail location, the Membership would start over with the credit card ***************** would provide us.

During the phone conversation with the RoadRunner Sports I gave the representative the number for the credit cards that I have. The representative said that the numbers I gave her did not match their records and therefore could not process my refund. My credit card numbers have not changed since RoarRunner Sports made the December 13, 2022 transaction. The representative then said that I needed to send her a copy (screenshot) of my bank statement showing the $69.99 transaction so that they could process my return. I do not understand why RodRunner Sports needs a copy of my bank statement to process the refund. I have already given my credit card numbers to the RoadRunner Representative. Also, as an update, today Wednesday, December 21, at 12:09pm Pacific, I have a second transaction from RoadRunner Sports in the amount of $69.99. So I have one transaction for $69.99 from December 13, 2022 and a second transaction for $69.99 from December 21, 2022. I need both transactions refunded.

I signed up to be a member in 2015. The store was new and I was invited to a treadmill evaluation. My Father was in town and I thought thought this will be fun. The first year I used the membership. After then, maybe a year or two later, I terminated my membership only to have it reinstated by Road Runner each year since then. Ive cancelled in person at the store, on the phone, filed previously online with BBB, and each year Im told my membership wont renew, and then it happens, again. Ive never seen anything like this before. Its really not right, and makes me feel bad this business model exists. At this point, its gross, but I believe this is the business model. Managing the account online is impossible, because you cant cancel online. You must call a specific phone number to cancel. I called twice today and waited until a support person answered. This experience further supports the idea of maybe the consumer will give up. Then, when I spoke to the support person I was told my membership will expire next year, and I cant have a refund for the renewal I didnt sign up for. I am not kidding. This is not right. So, after a gentle but intentional brush back from me the helpful woman spoke to her supervisor to make an exception, and turned off auto-renew, credited my **** for 2022, but well see what happens next year. The larger mystery is how does Road Runner keep updated on my credit card information. Since 2015, Ive likely had 4-5 credit card number changes from my bank for security reasons, and Road Runner billed my most recent credit card number for an auto-renew which has been turned off since 2016? I received only the second email from Roadrunner Sports in almost 3 years, yesterday. The first email in Jan 2020, welcoming me to the *** family, then yesterday to inform me I had $63 in earned credit to spend before my membership auto-renews (!?) for $49.99.We just want to thank you. You know, for being part of the most rewarding running family in America.We also want to let you know youve got plenty of time to spend your *** Rewards Cash and enjoy continuous *** benefits because your membership is set to automatically renew at $49.99 as promised.I am shocked to see any reference of auto renewing! We purchased one pair of shoes and a massager the only time we visited the store and have since relocated out of CA. Ive attempted to call and email without getting anywhere. That should not be the case as she should have received an email as well as postcard like flyer reminding the household of the renewal dates. Were glad ******************* received her renewal notice for this years upcoming renewal. We have cancelled the membership to ensure it will not renew moving forward and issued a prorated refund of $10 for 2021 as Ms ******** has not been charged in 2022 for the membership. We are happy to issue refunds for the 2 years ******************* has not been able to take advantage of the membership. If ******************* could give us a call at ************ and provide the credit card number the charges had gone to, we will be happy to make any manual refunds owed. ******************* was charged ***** 12/30/29 and ***** 12/29/21. We have refunded 10 of the ***** from 2021 and can refund the remaining ***** once we have the information. ******************* customer number she would reference when calling is *********.

Records show that ***************** voluntarily enrolled in the *** Rewards Membership program when placing an online order with us in December of 2017. This was a 1.99 trial membership and renewed in Nov 18 at *****. We apologize if this was somehow missed.
