This company initially offers rates competitive to ComEd, but then sharply increases charges at an apparently arbitrary time. The CCR representative I spoke with stated that a renewal had been sent in the snail mail for a lower rate. My family received no such renewal notice. We had been with CCR for five years with little change to our rates. The company made no attempts at outreach via email, texts, or phone calls. Our energy charges more than doubled with CCR over two months, as we requested and waited to change service providers. Kermit The Frog must have been inspired by CCR at some level when he stated “it’s not easy being green.”CleanChoice Energy Inc

Thank you Leslie for reaching out to us regarding your CleanChoice Energy account. I am sorry to hear that your experience with our company has not been a positive one, as this is never the experience we wish for you to have. Our records indicate you initially signed up on 3 month introductory program, as outlined in your terms and conditions. After the initial 3 months, the rate per kWh is based on the market. We offer a variety of plans, both variable and fixed, to meet the different needs of our customers. While sometimes variable plans can offer a lower rate (which customers love), they do run the risk of rising as well. We receive new rate plans every month and are always more than happy to review them with our customers at any time. If you would like to receive an additional copy of your contract, we are happy to provide this for your convenience. In terms of a renewal notice, this is not something you would have received because you were not on a fixed rate plan that locked your rate for a set period of time. Renewals are only sent for fixed rate plans, and not the variable plan you signed up for.
In regards to your monthly bill, please note, the supply charge is based upon your total monthly usage. Over the last 3 months your total usage has increased significantly. Your recent usage is as follows:1354 kWh in April, 3324 kWh in May, and 4358 kWh in June. Often in the summer months with air conditioning, fans, etc running in the home, electricity usage does often climb. If you feel your usage amount is an error, you would want to contact ComEd directly. They are responsible for reading your meter to determine the total monthly usage for the property.
Reviewing your account, we show that it has been set up for cancellation as requested and have confirmed a cancellation date of 8/18/23. This will serve as the drop date from CleanChoice Energy. Thank you for the time you supported clean energy with us. Please feel free to reach out to us if you should have any further questions or concerns. Worst electric supplier I have dealt with. Offered good rate but did not actually want to give it to me. Had me agree to a rate I did not want but "James" had to personally change the rate to the advertised one and they still bombarded me with emails claiming I needed finish my enrollment at an absurd rate. Then saw on ******************** *hat they we offering an even lower rate. I called and was assured I would get the lower rate. Nothing from them at all. What a runaround from an unethical business. I am done with them. BTW, I was told I needed to enroll online for the low rates, which I did. I just noticed they are no longer listed on ******************** *CleanChoice Energy Inc

Thank you David for reaching out to us regarding your account with CleanChoice Energy. I am sorry to hear your experience with our company has not been a positive one, as this is never the experience we wish for you to have. The rate program you are referring to was an online only promotion offered for a short period of time. You initially enrolled in June at a rate of $0.059 per kWh. When your enrollment was unsuccessful, you re-enrolled in July at a rate of $0.043 per kWh. Please note, we receive new rates every month. I do see you were able to successfully call into our contact center and our agent was able to assist with enrollment questions. Thank you for the time you supported clean energy with us. Please feel free to reach out to us if you should have any further questions or concerns. 1 starWe are being ripped off. We went with this company. They said they could help us reduce our JCP& L bill. We started with them in March and right away we noticed our bill went UP instead of down. In June, it was so mild we didn't use the air at all. We don't use a lot of electricity and yet our bill was $588. Now there was a new charge that is due in two weeks and we owe over $1000. This is crazy. We are seniors and can't afford bills like this. So I called JCP&L today and told them to remove Clean Choice from our account. I wish we'd never opened an account with them. I feel like we've been ripped off and lied to.Review fromJames B.

Like others who have posted about CleanChoice, I recently noticed that my rate had been raised to $.38 per kWh which is far higher than the rates they publish. I received no correspondence from them regarding this. As others have said, the company appears to be a scam.CleanChoice Energy Inc

Thank you James for reaching out to us regarding your CleanChoice Energy account. I am sorry to hear that your experience with our company has not been a positive one, as this is never the experience we wish for you to have. Our records indicate you signed up in May 2019 on a variable rate program, as outlined in your terms and conditions. If you would like to receive an additional copy of your contract, we are happy to provide this at any time for your convenience. Variable rate plans allow your rate to fluctuate (up or down) with the market. We offer a variety of plans, both variable and fixed, to meet the different needs of our customers. While sometimes variable plans can offer a lower rate (which customers love), they do run the risk of rising as well. In regards to our retail fixed rate plans, we do typically offer these for 12 or 24 months (based on location), and they are able to be cancelled at any time with no early termination fee. We receive new rate plans every month and are always more than happy to review them with our customers at any time. We have high standards for our energy sources and do not participate in the use of dirty fossil fuels, as many suppliers do. Instead we pride ourselves in being able to source 100% pollution free energy in the effort to combat climate change. Reviewing your account, we show that it has been set up for cancellation as requested and have confirmed a cancellation date of 7/21/23. This will serve as the drop date from CleanChoice Energy. PEPCO and DC Government need to do a better job of educating consumers about signing on to alternative renewable energy sources. I have just discovered that the fixed price PLAN I signed onto is only for one year and that if I don’t Renew a PLAN, I will be switched to month to month pricing which is at least twice per KWH. I was unaware that over the past two months I was charged 25.3 cents per KWH but 3 months ago I was paying 12.7 cents per KWH under a PLAN which was not renewed! I thought it was automatic. Apparently what is automatic is that the same company is providing my energy but on a different fee schedule. I only became aware of this when I had a knock at the door with a competitor, INSPIRE, attempting to sell me their renewable energy plan I believe at 11 cents per KWH and he asked what I was paying now. Since I am unfamiliar with that company I was not about to sign up on the spot which is their approach. As a result of our discussion, however, I was able to change to a 12.3 cent per KWH Plan with Clean Choice and am considered whether to make a switch as well, but after some further consideration. Was or is Clean Choice responsible after having sent me a letter and email about renewing my plan? Or should all of us be aware of the need to affirmatively RENEW every year???

Thank you Cheryl for reaching out to us regarding your CleanChoice Energy account. I am sorry to hear that your experience with our company has not been a positive one, as this is never the experience we wish for you to have. Our records indicate you have been on various 12 month fixed rate plans since January 2019, and have renewed into a new fixed rate plan each year, by responding to our renewal offers. You are correct that in January 2023, when we did not receive a response from you to renew into a new contract for the next year, that your rate deferred to a market (variable) rate, as per your terms and conditions. Prior to a fixed contract ending, we do send renewal notifications to our customers with an offer to continue into a new fixed rate, as we did with your account for your most recent renewal. We offer a variety of plans, both variable and fixed, to meet the different needs of our customers. While sometimes variable plans can offer a lower rate (which customers love), they do run the risk of rising as well. We receive new rate plans every month and are always more than happy to review them with our customers at any time. Reviewing your account, I do show you were able to reach out to our contact center on June 30 and we were able to successfully assist with a plan change for you to a fixed rate plan. We completely understand how frustrating it can be to overlook a renewal and are happy we were able to assist in processing a plan change to fit your needs. Thank you for continuing to support clean energy with us. Please feel free to reach out to us if you should have any further questions or concerns. 1 starI switched over hearing that the bill would barely change - well my rate was supposed to be .16 and it is .32 or .34. They sent me a gift card with the price it should have been. Now another month, same problem. I don't have 15 minutes for a complaint phone call every month, I don't have extra money laying around. I told them to un-enroll me and now I am stuck paying the price I never agreed to until it switches over. What a crock. Can't wait for the class action lawsuit.Review fromRichard B

1 starIts a scam!! Excellent marketing program zeroing in on the environmentally concerned, playing your desire for a "clean footprint." They make it seem like nothing changes, your being a "good person" switching over with them, until arbitrarily your bill doubles and them almost triples within the next year! Took two billing cycles to cancel & finally have them go away, squeezing every last penny they could get out of me until the bitter end! Finally back with RG&E about the bill is $60 not $158!! Breathing a sigh of relief at last!!Review fromChristopher R

1 starBe very careful and know what you are getting yourself into when you sign up for supply services from this company!
Yes I switched to them this past year under a 3 month fixed rate of 18.5 c/kWh when National Grid stated they would be charging much higher rates during the winter months than ever before. Be aware though that the rates you are being charged by CleanChoice Energy after your fixed rate ends is not posted anywhere! Therefore, each month is a surprise and that's what happened to me.
After the fixed rate ended I was getting charged 22 c/kWh, then 26.1 c/kWh, and finally 31 c/kWh while National Grid has posted a fixed rate of 14.115 c/kWh for the next 6 months. All of these rates from CleanChoice Energy were never posted anywhere and when I called CleanChoice Energy they said the rates are based off "Market Rates", and that these rates change from month-to-month. Which means they can't tell me (or you) what next month's rate is going to be. This I highly doubt! Because of all of this I cancelled services from them.
Just be aware that after your great signup rate offer ends you are going to get a surprise! Remember that it also takes about 2 billing cycles for these inflated rates to go away!Review fromCristine G

1 starI used CleanChoice for several years and in Dec 2022 received an email stating the cost of service would go from the $.13 kWh to a variable rate of $.32 and offered a fixed rate of $.181 if I responded within ~40 day. I knew that the the original rate was slightly higher than PEPCO but liked the idea of renewable energy so I put up with 13 cents a kWh, but also know that 18 cents is unreasonable and 32 cents is outrageous. The deal breaker was CleanChoice's tactic of essentially slipping the increase past me on email. No snail mail follow up, just a single email to "notify" me of the increase.
When I called to cancel my service the "new" offer reverted to my original contract price, but at that point my trust was gone. Since switching back to PEPCO, I've been bombarded with mailings to return to CleanChoice, and some appear threatening, e.g., bright red "second notice" stamp with an official-looking DC map logo. Beware of CleanChoice's business practices and make sure you are aware of market rates so you can make informed decisions.
