I received the ******* Advance Loan that I agreed to pay back with my tax refund. My refund was put under review by the IRS so I paid my advance loan out of my own money so it wouldn’t be reported against my credit as the loan payment was due by 3/31/24. My refund just got approved last week (5/14/24) and H&R Block charged me again for the ******* Loan that I already paid, $1300 worth, which has now created an overpayment due to their oversight and error. I have been getting the run around for over a week now to get my money back on my card. No one can transfer me to the proper place to escalate the issue. I am a single mother who needs this money for rent and it is being unlawfully withheld from me.

We hired H&R Block to do our taxes and gave them all of the necessary information, including our bank account information so that they could set up payment to the IRS. The bank account information was apparently adequate, as they were able to withdraw $405 from my wife's bank account to pay themselves. They filed our return and told us that our taxes would be paid. Unfortunately, we received a notice from the IRS shortly after that saying that our taxes had NOT been paid and were overdue. We are now being charged a late fee and interest. When we called H&R Block, they told us, essentially, "Oh yeah, just pay it online. Maybe you gave us the wrong bank account info." We countered that we had paid them so as not to have to use the IRS website, which we find confusing, but to no avail. We paid online, but this took a long time as the IRS website was a little complicated. We then got a CP60 form from the IRS, telling us in complicated terms that our payment was "misapplied" and we still owe thousands of dollars, even though that amount is still missing from our bank account. We have spent hours online and hours on hold with the IRS trying to sort this out, with no end in sight yet. Meanwhile we are accumulating interest and late fees. H&R Block has not returned messages and has inconsistently returned phone calls (or dropped our call after a long hold). The line that they call from is very scratchy and very hard to hear. At no point has anyone at H&R Block been able to explain why they did not provide the service they said they would, or been able to help us decipher this issue with the IRS. We paid H&R Block $405 for absolutely nothing. It would have been quicker for us to do our own taxes at this point.

He told me in a few weeks I should have it back. I always do. I normally have my tax return with in two weeks. It was February and no taxes back. I check on "Where is my return?" in IRS. It showed no results. I visited H&R Block I talked to the manager. She said IRS was slow and it was going to take longer. She said it showed on their and that it was being processed. I checked back in March, still same result nothing showed up in IRS. I called H&R Block, they never returned my phone call. I called H&R Block headquarters. ****** responded me and asked her to help me with this situation. She said that on her data appears that taxes were never submitted. She didn't even try to solve the problem. I went again to their office. ***** set up a phone call appointment on March 19th. He game same answer, taxes were in process. It was middle April and still no taxes back in my account. I called again ******, she opened a case #****. She said they were going to contact me. Nobody did. Regarding *** ********* complaint, our office leadership has contacted the client twice, left voicemails, and has not heard back from her. The IRS website shows that the refund was sent to the client. At this time we will not be submitting a refund for her tax preparation fees.

      Complaint: ********

I am rejecting this response because:

Respondent only called ONCE May 22nd, left a voice mail with the same answer than all of the agents. During the past months February to May that I have been calling numerous times (which I provided evidence), its starting all over again. I repeated every time the situation, I was told they were going to call me back. Nothing, they didn't, I received no answer. The voice mail respondent left was the same. He was asking me for the situation. H&R Block has not follow ups for clients, no return calls. They opened a case that was never addressed. He called me after I submitted the complaint to BBB (May 20th). I asked for an intervention from BBB to see if there could be any solution since the unresponsiveness of H&R Block. Again the voicemail was the same question, and it was four months later after the first call I gave them. It seems like they are not aware of the entire situation happening during these months. The lack of communication and the lack of follow up is outrageous.

There is still no answer to the entire complaint. I am attaching again the complaint for respondent to go thru.

      1. My husband and I have been H&R Block clients for over 30 years that, until 2021 joint return, consisted of long-term relationships with only 3 tax pros. Despite very good experience with tax pro at 3337 Connecticut Ave, NW, Washington DC for 2022 return, the experience with same tax pro/office and with H&R Block Customer Service for 2023 return has been shocking. 2. After uploading docs on 2/24/24 and meeting with pro on 3/8/24, we paid $470 on 3/17/2024 for 2023 draft return containing multiple errors, including many that would have increased our tax due and/or resulted in penalties (e.g., under-reported estimated state tax paid; under-reported HSA contributions; miscategorized one income source; used disallowed investment fees to reduce income; and entered wrong address, incorrect health coverage status, incorrect country code). Accurate returns were not able to be submitted until 4/8 and 4/15. 3. Second look review scheduled for 3/25/24 by office manager never happened. This was offered to me during unsolicited call from H&R Block “team manager” Jaqueline McClerkin on approx. 3/22/24 (or 3/23/24) and confirmed directly with office manager the same day. 4. State return had to be submitted in person shortly before end of day on 4/15/24 largely because internal H&R Block software did not include key MD state tax provision for restoring exemption to account for portion of AGI that is not taxable by state. After eventually completing adjustment by hand, tax pro reported that IT team said I was the only MD filer who had ever needed this, which seems highly unlikely. 5. Gross mishandling of my 4/16/24 request to Customer Service for $470 fee refund based on accuracy/maximum refund guarantee that was supposed to take 3-5 business days to investigate (e.g., not started, false note that called and left VM, false note that no record of service or documents, recent call from manager of different office) with no resolution to date. Most recent case is #*********

While filing my 92 year old mother-in-laws 2023 taxes this year on March 20, 2024 at the North Wales, PA. office we had issues from a 2021 tax situation. Our tax consultant ** ***** which we have gone to for the last 3 years was given a packet of personal information of this situation. We had tried to deal with H&R block the previous year at another location (Souderton PA.) about this but had no help. They never contacted us about any of the investigation. I had contacted ** about her looking into the situation 2x's and she had no time. She still had all the documentation we left with her. Now that most of the locations are closed I was forwarded again to the Souderton office and they told me that all document s were sent to Lansdale after the North Wales office had closed for the season. I tried calling the Lansdale office but no one answered and you needed to make an appt. So I made an appt. After that a district liason , *****, called me and said that the appt I booked was booked for the day. She said she would look into where my personal documents were and investigate the situation. It has been 3 weeks and after numerous phone calls to Carol I have not had one response. I don't even care about fixing the tax situation at this point I just want my personal documents back. The district liason ******* phone number is ###-###-####.

I was assigned a case number and instructed to go to the nearest H&R Block. The representative told me that I would not have to pay for the state return because I had Peace of Mind guarantee. I went to the nearest H&R Block and met with *** ***** * *****, AFSP. He told me he could take care of my state return, but he was not able to access my file at the time. *** ***** said he would get the ok and would call me so I could come back in and have my state return done. 3 weeks passed and I never received a call from *** *****. I called customer service number again, and was assigned another number. I received a call from *** ****** on 5/6/24. *** ******** assisted me with getting an appointment scheduled for 5/11/24 12:00 noon with *** ***** ** *****, the same tax pro from earlier. Again, he told me he's not able to access my taxes. He called a supervisor. I stayed in the office 1 hour waiting for him to gain access. Again, *** ***** stated he would call me. Today is May 16, 2024 and I have yet to receive a call. I called *** ******* ******** back today (5/16/24) and left a voicemail message. I am filing this complaint through the BBB because of the unprofessionalism. In addition, I want my state tax return completed and I expect for the Peace of Mind guarantee I paid for to be fully used.

I chose H&R block tax pro service to file my 2023 tax with a payment of $505 service fee in March-23-2024. However, in Apr-28-2024, I was contacted by IRS in mail stating there was a mistake of estimated tax payment ($6267) in my 1040 form prepared by my tax pro. IRS is now charging me $5436.27 (with $35.27 penalty and interest). I called H&R block customer service several time regarding this issue (Case #********). The customer service team only asked me to wait and told me an investigation team will follow up with me in email or phone (I never received any communication for this imaginary investigation team until today May-16-2024). I also tried to follow up with the 'tax pro'. I was first connected with her colleagues (because this tax pro was out of office). Her colleague was extremely helpful. She apologized regarding the mistake and any inconvenience caused by it. She also helped me to figure out what was wrong in the calculation: 1. The tax pro requested me to upload my 2022 tax return. She saw there were 4 vouchers of estimated tax payment included in my 2022 tax return (each voucher of $1061), so she ASSUMED I made the payment without any communication. She never asked me if I actually made those payment to IRS but she just ASSUMED. 2. On top of the wrong assumption of vouchers, she accidentally threw a year number of '2023' in the calculation. This is ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS. 3. $1061 * 4 + $2023 = $6267 The person I talked to leave a message to my tax pro ********. She told me she will ask ******** to support me to get my full refund and penalty charge reimbursement. But ********, my tax pro, she never apologized. ******** gave me a phone call and questioned: "you are located in Virginia, but I am located at North Caroline. Did I prepare your tax?" This morning, the HR block sent me a link to only refund $300 without any explanation. I AM NOT SATISFIED with this solution. I request to have full refund and penalty reimbursed for total 540.27.

I recently needed my 2022 taxes (that Centerville, Utah H&R Block prepared) and when I opened them to scan them I saw that they gave me someone else’s return, which included her name, address, social security #, occupation, everything!!! My name was on the outside of the packet and my cover page was in the back. I went to the Bountiful office to try to find out who got my returns! When I got there they said they have been trying to figure it out by checking appointments that were around the same time, they said they contacted the woman ********** to see if she had mine, but turns out they were checking 2023 not 2022. Right as I sat down ***** snatched them out of my hands, I told him I do not feel comfortable giving the return to them and that I would rather put them in ********’s hands, because she needs to know about this SERIOUS SECURITY BREACH! He then put them under his keyboard and treated us like we were criminals taking them with him as he left the cubicle .***** said “oh I am sure they were left on the printer and shredded” but seriously if an employee saw them on the shredded they would call that person who’s name is on the documents! ***** said he would generously give me the tax shield for one year which is a whopping $35 value, but he still can’t tell me where mine went. I was getting angry and the receptionist came in and said “listen we have gone out of our way to try to help you” that’s when I left,, because I had had it!!!! I am livid that someone else could have all of my personal information and I need ******** to know too. I honestly don’t think they told her. I hate that my information is out there and could be on the Dark Web. They treated this like it was no big deal.
