It is literally impossible to get into my account. When I try requesting my username and I enter my social and DOB it says my information does not match any records YET YOU REPORTED MY LOANS AS DELINQUENT AND TANKED MY CREDIT SCORE. So clearly you have my information!! Then both emails don’t work apparently and trying to get someone on the phone is impossible. This is wrong, truly, truly wrong. My life is literally over because of yall. My credit score that I had been rebuilding just ruined just like that. Yet apparently you have ZERO record of my literal social and DOB but had NO problem reporting me to credit agencies. Truly disgusting.Business Response

Dear *******
We are writing in response to the inquiry you submitted to the Better Business Bureau regarding
your federal student loan account with Nelnet. On behalf of your lender, the U.S. Department of
Education (ED), we service your federal student loans. We take your concerns seriously and
appreciate the opportunity to respond.
Your concern, as we understand it, is that your loans were reported as delinquent and it ruined your
credit score. You cannot access your account online. You are asking us to fix your credit score.
Based on your concern, and our review of your account, we verified you spoke with a representative
on March 18, 2025. They assisted you with your login information, so you were able to access your
account online.
Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, we have an obligation to ensure data we furnish to consumer
reporting agencies (CRAs) is complete and accurate. Based on your request and the information you
provided, we carefully reviewed your concern, and the corresponding data furnished to the CRAs.
Our investigation indicates the data accurately reflected your loan status at the time it was furnished.
Due to the continued delinquency occurring on your loans, the data we furnished February 2025
reflected your past due status. On March 18, 2025, your account was no longer past due because
you requested a forbearance which brought your account current.
While your loan was in repayment, we sent you billing statements each month. When your account
became past due, we also tried to reach you in other ways such as calling and sending email to help
bring your account up to date.
If you disagree with our initial decision, please send us new information including the basis of your
dispute and supporting documentation to the address in this letter. Please be sure to include your
account number.

I have contacted them at least 3 times now. one I requested a history of all the payments I have made on my loans because my information was sold to them from great lakes I am not able to access information. Instead they sent me a letter showing all of my loans that have been discharged, Second every time I call I ask why they have not updated the credit bureau I have spoken with the Department of education and even on their website it shows my current balance is 79,000. They are showing I owe : $200,178 which is extremely off this effects my debt to income ratio and lowering my score. CSRS when I call say they dont know who I would speak to for that to be corrected. ON my credit report they are showing as the debtor so they are responsible according to the department of education for updating this.Business Response

Within the past week, I received notification from a third party that my score of over 800 was suddenly hit, reducing it down by -210 points.
Upon investigating, I had learned that my student loan was 90 days delinquent, but had not received any correspondence pertaining to it. Due to everything that the company sends out being marked as spam, I didn't see the email from over 3 months ago mentioning the amount due. From that time as well, any follow up emails sent were unrelated and had reference to the state my account was in as well.
While I understand that I must pay, the fact the company showed very little concern for ruining my credit score and only the day after, offered solutions such as forbearance or deferment. When I reached out to speak with them in regards to it, I received no word back, even though I know that it is possible to retroactively apply the forbearance. I'm still currently waiting for a response.
The issue is increasingly dire for me and their lack of response is unnerving. The fact they desire funds from me while threatening the entirety of my financial is counter intuitive and their overall clarity is lacking.Business Response

On March 12, 2025 I was made aware of a prior balance with Nelnet.
Nelnet shows a past due balance for me
They did not notify me in writing or by phone of this past due balance.
They apparently updated my email address some time ago with an inaccurate email
They updated their page to not send bills via mail and did not notify me as they have the incorrect email address.
I want this corrected on my credit report immediately. If they had sent me a bill, I would have paid it as I have always done.Business Response

Your concern, as we understand it, is you state that you were not aware that your loans were with
Nelnet until March 12, 2025, and you were not notified in writing or by phone of the past due
balance. You also state that your email address was updated at some point incorrectly. You are
asking us to correct your credit report.
ED authorized the transfer of your federal student loans from Great Lakes Education Loan Services,
Inc. (GLELSI) to Nelnet, on January 3, 2023. We have included a copy of the Welcome Letter that
was sent on January 16, 2023.
At the direction of ED, all federal student loans were placed in forbearance due to the COVID-19
national emergency from March 13, 2020, through August 31, 2023. When your loans returned to
repayment in September 2023, they were eligible for ED’s on-ramp benefits. To help borrowers
successfully return to repayment in October 2023, ED created a temporary on-ramp period through
September 30, 2024. This 12-month on-ramp period protected borrowers from the worst
consequences of missed, late, or partial payments, including no negative credit reporting for
delinquent payments, and an automatic administrative forbearance after 90 days of delinquency to
bring the account up to date. On-ramp protections ended on September 30, 2024.
Our records show you received the automatic on-ramp forbearance on January 31, 2024, July 31,
2024, and October 31, 2024. We have enclosed a copy of your deferment/forbearance history for
your records.

I am rejecting this response because: this company never sent me a written bill, used an invalid email address for me. I was not aware of this company. If they had simply notified me in writing by mail, I would have paid the bill and been aware, but instead they used an email address that was not mine and only sent notices via email. I am rejecting this response because they never notified me by phone. If they can prove they notified me on my correct phone number and the email address they used has not been an email address I have used for over 20 year if I ever used it. I do not recall this email ever in use. The previous provider that they received my loan from did NOT use that email to contact me. I was unaware of who Nelnet was, I was unaware they had my loan, they did not bill me the way the previous provider did, they did not call me, I never requested notification via email, I have always received notifications via mail. For them to decide to take over my loan, for them to decide to notify me by email - to an incorrect email, for them to not mail me bills - as was requested on my previous account, this is not okay. I do not accept their response and will only accept their response when they acknowledge and correct my account and my credit report. This is literally the only late bill in over 7 years across my entire credit report and I can furnish proof of this.

My student loans have been in forbearance and doesn't end until April 30, 2025 unless I call for an extension. I contacted them to get a loan consolidation in Feb 2025 and got a response back with a mthly payment amt that would not be affordable for me. I called today 03/12/25 to speak with them after i noticed my credit score dropped 120 pts. The representative explained that I currently had no payment due and was still in forbearance and to contact credit bureaus to have correction made on my credit report. She said the consolidation they did caused the action on the debt and for it to change and look as if in default and payments behind over 90 days when that in fact wasn't and isn't the case. It's really unfair for me the customer to have to now make all these calls to three credit bureaus on a mistake they made. They should be the one correcting my account and providing the three credit bureaus with updated information to quickly get my credit report score back where it was before they made the mistake. I am requesting that they make correction and update the credit bureaus immediately.Business Response

On February 26th 2025 I paid my student loan off in full. Amount posted as February 27th. Two days later it showed interest of .07¢ that then became a principal balance of .07¢ three days later. Spoke with a representative between March 1st and 4th (don't remember the date) who said it would not need to be paid sense the account was paid in full on the 27th. Spoke to another representative today (March 11th) that said it is my actual balance and the account hasn't been paid in full and I would have to pay the .07¢ to close the account and that it can take up to three months for my account to reflect as closed, until which point my .07¢ would accrue interest (how does a zero balance accrue interest and become a balance?). Explained prior calls and what I was informed to which point I was transferred to an account supervisor (Mary, March 11th) who explained the .07¢ would 'fall off' once my payment had posted (it already posted February 27th) and that she was unsure why the previous specialist would say that it would accrue any interest. Paid the .07¢ that should never had accrued in the first place and asked for verification there would be no interest charged. Supervisor stated she noted it in my account. Explained I planned on reporting the matter to BBB at which point she said the other representative should have taken care of the amount because it would fall off and that, given the small amount, it wouldn't accrue any interest until late next year. Again does not explain how interest accrues on an account with a zero balance. Checked my statements, h & r card was method of payment, original pay off amount was paid prior to their end of day time of 3pm on the 26th. Would like this investigated to prevent others paying illegally applied interest on their accounts. I don't care if it's a small amount, I want the .07¢ I never should have been charged refunded.Business Response

Why choose a BBB Accredited Business?BBB Business Profiles may not be reproduced for sales or promotional purposes.
BBB Business Profiles are provided solely to assist you in exercising your own best judgment. BBB asks third parties who publish complaints, reviews and/or responses on this website to affirm that the information provided is accurate. However, BBB does not verify the accuracy of information provided by third parties, and does not guarantee the accuracy of any information in Business Profiles.
When considering complaint information, please take into account the company's size and volume of transactions, and understand that the nature of complaints and a firm's responses to them are often more important than the number of complaints.
BBB Business Profiles generally cover a three-year reporting period, except for customer reviews. Customer reviews posted prior to July 5, 2024, will no longer be published when they reach three years from their submission date. Customer reviews posted on/after July 5, 2024, will be published indefinitely unless otherwise voluntarily retracted by the user who submitted the content, or BBB no longer believes the review is authentic. BBB Business Profiles are subject to change at any time. If you choose to do business with this company, please let them know that you checked their record with BBB.
As a matter of policy, BBB does not endorse any product, service or business. Businesses are under no obligation to seek BBB accreditation, and some businesses are not accredited because they have not sought BBB accreditation. BBB charges a fee for BBB Accreditation. This fee supports BBB's efforts to fulfill its mission of advancing marketplace trust.
