1 starI rented a car in *********** ********** when I arrived at the location they didn't have the car I rented and we were given a dodge truck for the same price. The truck kept breaking down and eventually wouldn't start at all. We immediately called customer service which directed me to call Roadside Assistance, I called Roadside Assistance and gave them the location of the vehicle and the directions I received from customer service which was to have the vehicle towed to *********************. Roadside Assistance first of all it took them a week or more to come get the vehicle and then they towed the truck to ***** OK to the Enterprise rent a car center. And now they have took almost $5000 out of my bank account today.Review fromAli E

1 starI am deeply disappointed with how Avis/Budget has handled my complaint regarding a forced insurance purchase and unsatisfactory service during my rental from their *********, ********** location on August 27, 2024. Despite filing a complaint through their customer service in August, it has been nearly two months with no resolution. Every response I receive is the same: that my case has been forwarded for review and that I should wait further.I have been extremely patient, but after almost two months of no progress, I will proceed with disputing the charge through my credit card company. This experience has been frustrating and will certainly affect my decision on whether to rent from Avis/Budget again in the future.Review fromRaymond K

1 starAvoid at all costs unless you want to pay for the maintenance of their defective vehicles. Rented a car that had a defective battery and had to request service through Avis' helpline. A week after the rental, Avis sends a letter indicating that they would be passing on their mechanical breakdown costs for the defective battery to me. Reaching out to customer service was a pointless process that eventually led to a slow response stating that their careful investigation indicated that the defect occurred after leaving the rental lot, so it would be the renter's responsibility to pay for the all mechanical failures regardless if it's a result of wear and tear from prior renters and poor maintenance by Avis. Would highly advise considering any other option that maintains their vehicles and doesn't charge the customer to maintain their fleet.Review fromConnie S

1 starImpossible to get in touch with a human on the phone for lost and found. Not sure if this issue is specific to ****** location or across the board. Can't even reach a voicemail, just puts you on hold and then hangs up. Opened a lost item ticket and when I went to check on the status, the ticket had been deleted (not closed) in the system. Impossible to reach the local front desk and of course the customer service **** say they cannot help with lost items or reaching the local office personnel.Review fromQueen J

1 starI rented a car to drive for **** for several months at the ***********, ** location. There were numerous issues ranging from billing to mechanical. ******, the manager, gets 5-stars. However the owner (?) ****** gets a one-star. This location is independently owned and operated and doesn't positively represent the Avis ******* emailed about the lights needing to be replaced on the car and was told to purchase them and replace them myself.I declined because that isnt in ****s rental agreement. ****** then sent me a series of harassing and aggressive emails filled with bad grammar and spelling. He deflects, makes excuses, and comes across as dishonest. He told me to return the vehicle immediately. I currently drive for **** full-time and was blessed to take my business somewhere else. I read other reviews online for this location and others have had similar experiences.****** needs lessons in leadership, operations management, written communication, and empathy.Review fromBrian H

1 starI changed to Avis from ***** because they were cheaper on our last few rentals, what a mistake. I have had issues with the vehicles being dirty and in poor condition. In addition I am preferred so was supposed to be able to skip the counter, but that did not work either, because they did not have the correct vehicle for us and it was locked. Then the most recent issue happened today, that is the deciding factor for never using them again. I reserved a SUV, prepaid for a trip with some friends of ours. They were arriving a day earlier into ******* than us. I called to let Avis know that my friend was picking up the vehicle, but they would not allow me to add his name. They said I have to pick it up since I am paying for it and it is my account. So I said to rebook with his name as primary, when they went to do that they said the vehicle is no longer available, even though my reservation had the vehicle for the same time frame. I since cancelled completely and went with a different company that had no issues. What ever happened to customer service and a good customer experience. ********************** needs to take some lessons on this.Review fromGrant P

1 starThe morning of my 8am reservation (which had been made a week in advance) I start getting text messages from an employee at the Avis rental location that my vehicle was returned late and is not rentable - they ask if I can wait to get the vehicle until 9am. At 10am I respond to the employee asking for an update on my vehicle and saying that I am heading over to get my vehicle, or another available. Their response: "0 cars available".I ask this employee texting me for a refund - they do not respond and keep saying they are searching for vehicles. I call Avis, sit on hold for 20 minutes, and get a refund for my reservation on my own.I would have preferred getting poked in the eye with a sharp stick. Such horrible service. Don't expect to get a car on the day of your reservation when renting from Avis.Review fromKatie N

2 starsWhen I prepay for a rental car and then get an email stating "your CAR has been reserved" I expect to have a rental car when I arrive at the airport; however, on my recent trip I was told there were no cars available despite my prior planning and with no rpior notifcation from Avis stating there would be an issue. Apparently, per the lady at the desk, you only "reserve the price not the car." This is a 100% misleading business practice that caused me inconvenience and increased costs as I had to find an **** and another rental car on short notice with limited time. On their behalf, I will say that getting fully reimbursed was an easy process and much appreciated.Review fromRobert H

Car reservation made a week earlier cancelled evening prior ... via text. Manager/owner wasn't particularly apologetic and gave no assistance with booking elsewhere. Only option was to rebook elsewhere at nearly 4 x the reserved rate. Poor customer service!Avis Rent A Car

BBB Review #*****
Dear ******* ******,
Avis values the relationship that we have with our travelers and always strives to do the right thing. We apologize for not being able to locate a vehicle for you at your arrival time.
We forecast vehicle availability based on how vehicles are scheduled to return. Several circumstances could cause inventory issues such as vehicles being extended, not returned on time or as agreed, returned to a different location, or breakdowns. We do our best to accommodate every rental but sometimes if vehicles aren't returned when they are scheduled, it causes us to be short on vehicles. I completely understand how frustrating and inconvenient this situation has been for you.
Although we realize that we cannot make up for a disappointing experience such as this, we do appreciate your contacting us.
Sincerely,
Avis Budget Group

We rented from Avis after flying in. We prepaid in advance. We could smell that the car had been smoked in and had another musty/moldy smell. I am allergic to smoke and had to take daily medication that isnt cheap. My husband kept complaining that something in the car would burn and irritate his eyes. We had already started to drive to our destination so we were unable to turn around and request another car. However, in the past I have never got a rental car that hasnt been smoked in. One of the biggest issues we had a concern with is that when I got my email receipt we had an extra charge over the prepaid amount. I decided to call on this and the lady was very rude and it took forever to get an answer. I was told they charged us for some gas. We had topped off the tank by the rental place and the car wouldnt hold anymore gas. When we received the car it wasnt even full. **************** lady said it was probably a mistake and she would refund us. We have to wait 3-5 days for our refund. I hope we receive it.Avis Rent A Car

Avis Case: 68338306
Dear ******* *****,
In regard to the aforementioned BBB complaint case# ###, thank you for giving us the opportunity to address your concerns.
Avis values the relationship that we have with our travelers and always strives to do the right thing. We apologize for the inconvenience this matter has caused.
Our records indicate an after check-in fuel audit was performed and the vehicle was showing returned with 0.9 gallons under a full tank. A fuel service fee of $9.99 per gallon was applied in accordance with the notification on your signed rental agreement. All rentals are subject to audit, if a fuel receipt has been presented at time of vehicle return, and once the vehicle is turned off and restarted it shows a lesser amount of fuel, a fuel service fee will apply.
However, our **************** team did submit for a courtesy refund of the fuel charge. Please allow 3-5 days for this adjustment to reflect on your account.
Thank you for allowing us to assist you.
