Do NOT sign up for Pumpkin Pet Insurance! The premiums are very high and they deny most claims! I was fortunate to find coverage through my employer that is 1/3 or the price for much better coverage!Pumpkin Insurance Services

Thanks for your feedback, ****. Keep in mind that not all providers are one in the same, and paying less per month often means paying more when your pet gets hurt or sick. We do offer extensive accident and illness coverage with a 90% reimbursement rate. Like most providers, we do not provide coverage for pre-existing conditions. This means that if something occurs, or was showing signs or symptoms prior to enrollment or during the waiting period, it would not be eligible for coverage. This includes conditions that are related to, secondary, or resultant from a pre-existing condition. Once a claim is filed, it is then processed by a Pumpkin claims team member, all of which have a veterinary medical background. Our claims team uses medical records and documentation provided by your veterinarian in order to determine coverage eligibility. If you need any further assistance, you can reach our care team by phone or chat during business hours, or email us anytime.Review fromLynn P.

Pumpkin has denied every claim I have made as preexisting. One was for a dental. How can a dental be preexisting? It's not a condition. I brought my cat in for what turned out to be urinary crystals. Also denied as preexisting even thought he has never been to any vet ever for this condition anywhere. They also denied paying for the vet prescribed food, even though the policy says prescribed foods are covered.Pumpkin Insurance Services

Thanks for your feedback, ****. Pre-Existing conditions occur when signs or symptoms of an accident or illness was noted by your veterinarian either prior to enrolling or during the 14 day waiting period, or for issues that are secondary to another pre-existing condition. Our plans also exclude preventative care, so preventative dental would not be eligible for coverage. If you contact us, we'd love to walk through your explanation of benefits to determine why something in particular was not eligible for coverage.Review fromTalitha P

I wish I'd seen these reviews before signing up with Pumpkin. Sadly, I have to agree that it is a scam. The reviews they push to the public no not appear to be real experiences. Their customer service department is friendly for the most part but they can't do anything to help and seem to just try to cover for the very uneducated and unhelpful claims department. They clearly do not have medical professionals reviewing their claims. My vet laughed out loud when they denied a claim for a yeast and ear infection claiming it was connected to allergies. Imagine trying to argue that your vaginal yeast infection is due to a peanut allergy. It's unreal, and you can't speak to the claims department. You just reach customer service (after insanely long holds) and they tell you to email a claims appeal. One customer service representative admitted that she agreed with me - that yeast and ear infections have nothing to do with allergies. She told me to have my doctor write a letter, which he did. They completely disregarded the ********* *********based information and instead wrote a crazy response claiming that because my dog was itching her skin in the past and has an enzyme deficiency, the yeast and ear infections were clearly related to allergies. FYI - my dog was put on steroids due to a spinal injury (that Pumpkin did cover) in October for over a month. She developed an odor following that. We mentioned it at the time of her CT scan (that I waited 2 months to have done so it was pre-approved by Pumpkin). Her yeast infection was likely caused by the steroid (if anything) but they are just so quick to dismiss anything not to pay for it. I have so many other complaints with their response time, failure to properly research claims, and lack of concern -- but the most upsetting thing is that I moved forward with them and now there are new preexisting conditions due to their lack of knowledge of basic *********based and scientific medicinal practices and diagnoses.Pumpkin Insurance Services

Thank you for your feedback, *******. We definitely understand it can be frustrating when a claim is not approved. Keep in mind that while we may not be able to offer coverage for pre-existing issues, new unrelated accidents or illnesses may be eligible for coverage. If you need any further assistance, you can reach our care team by phone or chat during business hours, or email us anytime.Review fromJean K

1 starDO NOT SIGN UP FOR PUMPKIN. YOU WILL REGRET IT! I'm writing this review so other pet owners aren't fooled by Pumpkin sales quotes and sweet-talking prior to signing up. Total scam and corrupt, non-transparent company! I would never have signed up and spent over $1500 in premiums only to find out nothing would be covered because everything is "pre-existing", if their policy and business practices were transparent. All my claims were denied due to "pre-existing" conditions. Take note that ALL prior vet notes/radiology reports and records are used by Pumpkin to note pre-existing conditions REGARDLESS OF WHETHER OR NOT THE CLIENT HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THEM OR THE *** HAS SHOWN SIGNS OR BEEN TO THE VET FOR THE CONDITION. My dog never had back issues or went to vet for back pain. Then she had an accident and needed to see vet BUT because of a prior x-ray for another issue (emergency spleen surgery) the yr before that showed spinal deterioration (I wasn't told about it because the xrays were for her spleen and my dog didn't have back pain and it was not relevant). Then she had the accident, couldn't walk and went to ER. The claim was denied due to pre-existing spinal deterioration which we had never been to vet about and didn't know existed! My dog never showed "signs or symptoms" of back pain until this accident so I was confused. Then the truth was revealed about their POLICY. TRANSPARENCY is lacking here. Don't be fooled! I was NEVER informed of the true nature of pre-existing because if I had been, I would NEVER HAVE SIGNED UP FOR PUMPKIN INSURANCE. Obviously as a pet ages many health issues become present, many we know nothing about or can see signs of BUT the issues could show ** in x-rays, bloodwork, vet reports, and trust me, Pumpkin will find them somewhere just so they can DENY YOUR CLAIM. TRANSPARENCY is lacking here. Don't be fooled!Review fromShanelle R

1 starSuper done with these guys. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. I need to make a claim it takes MONTHS to even get the claim approved. They apparently pride themselves on their quick turn around time but this is not true. I have reached out MULTIPLE times for this last claim and keep getting the run around. The only time you get something done is when it comes down to having to leave a negative review. Once my renewal comes around I am 100% canceling. I have been giving them mutiple opportunities to make it right and they keep dropping the ball. I would not advise anyone to get these guys. Look somewhere else, don't be like me and keep getting screwed over. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. Once this claim is taken care of, I will be taking my cats for their shots since I pay for their wellness plan and then I am DONE. If I could leave zero stars, I would.Review fromSusan W

5 starsI adopted my cat and was advised by a family member to get pet insurance, and I chose Pumpkin. After my baby had a dental cleaning, it was found that she needed a dental extraction, and it was quite expensive. Pumpkin covered 90% in a very easy process and paid it by direct deposit after only a month. Highly recommended!Review fromAndrew Z

Total scam. They make up so many reasons why they can't cover anything, they told me my cat's two broken teeth that were discovered DURING surgery were somehow pre-existing. How can they be pre-existing if they discovered them for the first time during surgery? They said its periodontal disease. Oh, mechanical trauma to a tooth is gum disease now? The claims take forever to process, you get 15% of what you're owed back, and it takes weeks to deposit it. I don't have time for this ****, they only wanna give you the runaround. Honestly, I'm not even kidding you, with the amount they DON'T cover added together with what it costs per month, I would save money just paying out of pocket! Yes, you read that right! Insanity. I shudder to think what would happen if my cats had an actual medical emergency, I would feel so alone!Pumpkin Insurance Services

Thanks for your feedback, ******. Like most providers, we do not provide coverage for pre-existing conditions. This means that if signs or symptoms were noted by your vet prior to your plan becoming effective, we would not be able to provide coverage. We do rely on medical records and notes directly provided by your vet to determine onset, and since your vet noted these signs and symptoms prior to your plan starting, it's not eligible under your policy. If you and your vet disagree with these results, you can still file an appeal and our team will absolutely review this for you.Review fromNicole S

1 starHorrible company! Still waiting almost three weeks for a claim to be processed. I was told that bloodwork was only covered if the vet was looking for heartworm, even though this IS NOT stated in my policy. I decided to cut my losses and cancel since I'm paying $236 per month for two senior cats. Because I had the wellness coverage, I ended up paying THEM an additional $300+ because I canceled early. This company is the absolute worst! I went back to ASPCA pet insurance. At least they're honest and will find a way to even partially reimburse you for items that aren't necessarily covered.
