I don't have an issue with them not taking coupons, accepting returns or exchanges due to their bankruptcy. What I have an issue with is them not accepting gift cards. That was money that was already giving to them and now they are not allowing us to use what was already ours. That is stealing.

JOANN is going out of business. While this has been RUMORED for a while, it was not officially announced until a few days ago - see their Facebook page as an example (announced 4 March). Apparently, even the employees didn't know they were closing until it was announced. However, the store will remain open for at least a few more months while they sell off inventory.

I was in the store last week and, in fact, shop there weekly (or more often). Today I was informed that they would not accept my gift card. There was NO SIGNAGE. NO WARNING. NO NOTICE. This is wrong, sneaky, and seems potentially illegal. I'd like my balance refunded, please.

      Dear ********,

We sincerely apologize for any frustration this situation may have caused. Following a comprehensive sale process and auction, GA Group together with the Prepetition Term Loan Agent, was selected as having the winning bid to acquire substantially all of JOANN’s assets. Subject to court approval of the transaction, the winning bidders plan to wind-down ongoing operations and conduct going-out-of-business sales at all JOANN locations.

We are committed to working constructively with the winning bidder to ensure an orderly wind-down of operations that minimizes the negative impact on all JOANN Team Members, vendors, customers and communities. We expect to begin, or in some cases continue, going-out-of-business sales at all locations immediately.
Due to these changes, the redemption of JOANN gift cards, discounts, coupons, and price matching have been suspended. We truly wish we could assist further with this matter, but you can file a claim for reimbursement through the following website: ***********************************************

      Sincerely,

      JOANN

I am rejecting this response because: Customers were given NO notice that gift cards would no longer be accepted after a certain date. Even employees didn’t know the stores would be closing so soon. In fact, the stores will be open for MONTHS to come - the money is there, on the cards. If it works as cash for us, it should serve as cash for the new “owners” of this business. This is lost money for hundreds or thousands of customers. It is wrong and I wouldn’t be surprised if it is illegal. No, I don’t accept an apology or an explanation - this isn’t an “effort” at all, only an excuse to get out of honoring a commitment by the store. I want my money back.

I went into my Joann’s fabric store to find that they are closing for good. I knew some stores were being closed but I had not heard anything about nationwide closings. I am a part of the online emails to receive news/coupons/etc and did not receive any news or updates about the situation.
I have $100 worth in gift cards and after being rung up, was told that gift cards are now not being accepted and haven’t been accepted since last Friday. There were no signs saying gift cards not accepted (in fact, employees were still hanging ‘store closing’ signs). How were we to know! I had to buy almost $80 worth of stuff which should have been covered by the gift cards I got for Christmas! (This past Christmas btw)

On 11/27/2024 I purchased a $100 gift card from JoAnn Fabrics in Lafayette, IN. Card # ****************.
Authorization/ Approval Code #******. I bought this gift card for my daughter-in-law for Christmas to go with her sewing machine. In Jan 2025 She took it to a store in Louisville, KY( where she lives) and they were excessively rude & would not honor the card. She gave the card back to me on 3/3/2025 and I said I would go back to the store where I purchased it in Lafayette. 3/5/2025 I went into the store and spoke with a manager. She was short with me and I would say rude as well. She said they are no longer accepting gift cards. I total her the receipt does not say anything about a cut off date to use them, the back of the card states “treat this card like cash”. They also said nothing to me when I purchased the card about any type of deadline to use it. The manager at the Lafayette, IN store told me that “it was all over the news so I should have been watching, that JoAnn Fabrics was no longer owned by JoAnn Fabrics, and that I needed to contact corporate and walked away from me. I looked up who currently owes JoAnn Fabrics and it says the JoAnn Fabrics Corporation still owns it and that they filed for Chapter 11. I called the phone # to corporate at 11:49 am EST on 3/5/2025. I directed by a prompt to choose Customer Care. Customer had a recorded announcement that says “we are at home crafting. If you call us during business hours (which were 9am - 6pm) they would be happy to help me. There is no other phone # that I found for corporate. So obviously they aren’t answering their phone. My daughter-in-law is in tears, I’m not happy that I paid $100 for a gift card that they will not honor. I’m asking for your help to me resolve this issue. Thank you.

      Better Business Bureau:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID ********, and find that while I am not satisfied with their response, and I feel it is just lack of a company taking responsibility, I don’t feel in the end things are going to change. I think it is just far too easy for companies filing for bankruptcy to neglect loyal customers and to honor the gift cards/certificates that had already been purchased by such customers. There should be some sort of law or rule in place to protect customers in these situations. I know this happens way too often. We are punished for purchasing a gift card. It’s just wrong! You buy the company or obtain it through any means, you should be responsible for accepting and honoring those gift cards already purchased. I will never purchase anything else from JoAnn Fabrics under their current ownership or any other ownership and I will do my best to spread the word to all of my friends and social media contacts to boycott them as well. In the end it isn’t probably going to make much difference, but I want others to know they way that I have been treated and hope to prevent them from having to go through what I have. I will also never, ever purchase another gift card or gift certificate from any other company. Losing $100 especially in todays economy hurts. I appreciate the BBB attempt to try and help me resolve this issue and I know your hands are tied to some extent. Sincerely, ***** *****

I went into Joanne Fabrics store on 3/5/25 in Ladylake, Florida to buy jewelry and spent 45 minutes looking for the jewelry I wanted and when I was at the checkout after waiting another 15 minutes, I gave them a gift card I received for Christmas and they told me I couldn’t use it because their closing their stores … I told them that it was a gift card that was already paid for and they still refused my card… I want to know if this is true and if so why are they still selling them in the stores and also not posting any signs that they weren’t receiving them… needless to say, I am very, very upset and I told them that was wrong for taking our money for the gift cards when they knew they were going out of business…

My husband purchased a Joann's gift card for me last Christmas. Tot al amount $200.00. I used the card one time and had a balance of $180.53. I heard from a friend that Joann's was closing and when I checked the notice it said only select stores were closing. My friend told me on Sunday 3-2-25 that all stores were closing. Knowing I had the gift card I went to the Joann's in ****** **. The signs at the store said up to 40% off. There was nothing on the doors saying anything about the gift cards. After waiting about an hour and a half at the cut counter and another 45 min at the registers, much to my dismay they had a sign indicating no gift cards accepted on the register. It was the only location of a sign with that information. I voiced my surprise as I had not received any notice. I was told they sent out an email. I was told I could not use my gift card that still had over $180.00 on it. I checked my email and there was NO E-MAIL notifying of the policy of not taking the gift cards after 2-28-25. (I was there 3-2-25) I did research and in none of the public announcements about the store closings mentioned the gift cards. I believe the closing announcement was 4 days prior. Only when you get to the bottom of the FAQ's does it mention the gift cards. The gift card was bought with no expiration date yet now they will not take them. They already have our money so now they are defrauding their customers by not accepting what was properly purchased. The stores are still open and selling merchandise, why did they cancel the gift cards other than to steal money from their customers. I believe they owe me the balance of my gift card. I have attached a photo of the balance with proof of the possession of the card.

I am rejecting this response because:

I have reviewed the response by the business in reference to the lack of honoring a previously bought gift card. I find their answer to be unacceptable and insulting. As a Joann's customer the gift card was bought in good faith and paid for. The company that purchased Joann's bought the entire company, including the gift cards. Now they feel they have the right to deny customers credit that they purchased while they are still making money on the sale of items in the stores. There is no reason why they cannot honor the gift cards or reimburse the amount of money left on the cards. The suggestion to file a claim in bankruptcy court is laughable. The likelihood that I will get my money back from bankruptcy court is probably next to nill. Instead of defrauding their customers they ought to do the right thing and honor the gift card or give the money back. Shame on the company for their shady business practices.

On 2/28/25 I received an email from JoAnn Fabrics that all their stores were closing. On 3/1/25 I went to the JoAnn Fabrics in ********** ** (*** ***** ****) because I had gift cards with a balance remaining totaling $65.14. I bought $151.92 worth of fabric and misc. items. After the cashier rang everything up I was told they could not accept gift cards anymore. Since she had rung everything up I was unable to 'return' anything due to the store closing. I was forced to pay the full amount with a credit card. The cashier told me that the 'gift card button' on the cash registers had all been removed so no one could override the payment option. I have reviewed the daily emails starting on 2/28/25 when the announcement was made and read the fine print and NO WHERE on those emails does it state that gift cards will no longer be accepted effective 3/1/25 (the cashier told me 2/28/25 was the last day for they were able to redeem gift cards). There were no signs posted at the store about this matter as well. I feel like I have been robbed of $65.14 as they have already received the money that was spent for the gift cards. It really makes me angry that there was no notice given and no time to redeem them. I feel that JoAnn Fabrics should issue me a check for $65.14. I also think it is such bad business ethics to stick the employees with a lot of angry customers when they are told they can't pay with a gift card.

On February 24, 2025 I ordered from JoAnns online 3 beading items. One item (which I ordered 2 of), 22" Aqua Mix Quartz Stone Chips Bead strands. I received 2 gift cards for Christmas, so just over two months ago, for the amount of $140. Joann fabrics is now closing their stores and will no longer honor gift cards, which I had no idea that was happening. I was under the impression that under Vermont Laws that gift cards/certificates are like having cash in hand. I called to talk to someone at the store about it and she said it was a corporate issue and she hung up on me. My husband called to speak to a manager, without me knowing, and she apparently said she didnt give a **** and that was that. I just feel like its not $5, its $140 that I was looking forward to spending there. And now I feel as if the gift I was given has just been stolen from me. I know that the business is closing , but does that mean Im just out of this money?

I was given a $50 gift card from a friend of mine for Christmas. I go to spend it at Joann fabrics and all of a sudden they are not accepting gift cards anymore online or in the stores. To me this equals fraud. My friend is now out $50. And I'm out my gift that she gave me. When I reached out to customer service they told me to go ahead and call customer service. However if you look at the screenshot that I am attaching it says clearly that gift cards are no longer being accepted in store or online.

      Dear *******,

We sincerely apologize for any frustration this situation may have caused. Following a comprehensive sale process and auction, ** ***** together with the Prepetition Term Loan Agent, was selected as having the winning bid to acquire substantially all of JOANN’s assets.

      Sincerely,

      JOANN

I am rejecting this response because:

The customer service representatives had plenty of time in our correspondence to tell me that Joanne was no longer accepting their own gift cards. And yet they did not until several messages later. And they want me to go to the new company that's taking them over and get my 50 bucks from them? That's ludicrous. They are acting in a fraudulent manner they stole $50 from the person who gave me the gift card and now they're stealing $50 from me because I can't use it. And that is why I reject their proposal

I am rejecting this response because:
      1st  you are committing fraud

2nd I tried to go to that website but my case number wasn't listed so I couldn't proceed.

Do you have any more ideas that will prevent you from reimbursing me the $50?  Don't even try telling me you don't have the capital to send me what is rightly mine.
