Erie installed a new roof on our house in January 2022. We are disappointed with Erie’s lack of attention to our concerns about the job that they did. We said on several occasions that we just wanted a good job done on the roof and at the time we felt that Erie could do it. To correct a flashing issue, Erie wrote a special addendum to the contract that said we would not have to pay the last $5,000.00 owed on the roof until the flashing issue was resolved. At that time, Erie wrote up a special work order for the flashing to be removed and even offered a rebate for the repainting that would have to be done. Then Erie went ahead and charged our credit card for the final $5000.00. When we asked why, Erie said that they had completed the contract! The work has yet to be completed. This incident and lack of communication from Erie made us curious about the overall quality of the work that Erie had done and prompted us to contract with another roofing company to inspect the roof. The other roofing company provided us with pictures and videos of the problems they found on the roof and a written description of the issues. They found several problems including vent cap shingles that were split, nail heads that were left exposed and no tear off of the flat roof, which Erie verbally agreed to several times, in addition to the ugly brown flashing that was erroneously installed against the dormer walls. Erie said that the roof was installed correctly but these pictures and videos show otherwise. We do not necessarily accept the findings from the other roofing company but somehow Erie needs to prove to us that the problems that the other roofing company found are not problems. We asked Erie to respond to us by May 23rd, 2022 indicating that Erie will do the repairs to our satisfaction (this letter is in the mail to arrive this week). If Erie doesn’t want to do the repairs, the company that did the inspection said that they would make the repairs.

      Complaint: ********

I am rejecting this response because:

The first time the company reached out to us was today when our contact from Erie finally texted us. (May 23rd)

We called Erie on Friday morning, May 13th, and spoke to their representative.  We detailed the issues as explained above to them over a recorded line.  The representative assured us that someone would get back to us within the hour.  Several hours later that representative accidently called us back again thinking that we were a new contact.  He was not calling back to follow up on our case.  He again assured us that someone would be in contact with us within the hour.  It is now late Monday afternoon (May 16th) and I have heard nothing from Erie.  I would ask Erie to check their recorded lines from May 13th.

I sent a certified letter received by Erie on May 19th in which I detailed our issue that I had reviewed on a recorded line with an Erie representative on May 13th.

Other than the text that my wife got from Erie today, I would like to see any evidence that Erie has reached out to us.

      Sincerely,

Erie apologizes for the issues at hand. We were able to make contact with the customer and went to the home on 5/26. We completed a full inspection at that time. Erie will be addressing the issues that the customer has that are deemed Erie related and will be keeping in contact with the customer. We are looking to complete these items by 6/10/2022, weather permitting.

I had a new roof put on in November 5th,2019. We have had issues from day 1. They fell thru the sheetrock 2x. Then a yr later I had them out to inspect a soft spot. Was then told oh they didn't cut a shingle right. It'll dry out and be fine. Here we are 6 months later the soft spot isn't dry and as a matter of fact the whole roof is now soft. I've attempted to call them and it goes to vm like some of the other customers here have talked about. I've called the finance company and have not heard from them either. There is a 10 year warranty well I've not made it 2 years.

Summer of 2021...after failed attempts to start project...Erie came started tear off and abandoned my house for 2 weeks... still not done with my roofing project on a standard sized cape cod house with no dormers. Damaged downspouts...extra large dumpster left in driveway...materials misordered and overlooked...changed original plans from tear off to roof over despite several problems with original roof now charging more than original quote to complete. Left numerous messages of concerns and complaints. Photos of how my house was left sitting..in rain storms while products were located. So frustrated and heartsick with this. Promises to do repairs in the spring have been denied as ***** ****** of the company reports he has gone above and beyond with Erie to fulfill the contract. My new gutters and downspouts are damaged including the Leaf Filters I had installed the previous year. I now have ice hanging from gutters and dripping on walk ways resulting in my fall and injuries of fractured tailbone and ribs. Shingles bumping up instead of laying flat because of improper installation. Photos and concerns expressed to the company and ***** ****** throughout the winter were met only with words that it will be addressed in spring. This is how the left my house..damaged and compromised. They have belittled me repeatedly, as my home does not matter nor do I. The trauma they created has emotionally scarred me as I look at the damages left behind every day. Erie is very upset about this post and all the pictures of what the did. They have no sent a lawyer to send me mail that Erie has done their job to satisfaction and are no issues to be addressed! The run off from the gutters caused ice on my walk way. So a snowy wet day I fell because of the issues. I have no a broken tailbone...fractured ribs and bruised pelvis. For 6 weeks I have been in pain...and Erie Home along with ***** ***** look the other way and won't follow up in the third contract they made.

I am rejecting this response because: their counsel has told to cease and desist. I have been asking repeatedly to have problems addressed. Their lack of workmanship and attention has significantly damaged my house structurally. I also have a leak in the roof into the upstairs ceiling! All from a roof not even a year old. Their warranty and promises are worthless.

      Complaint: ********

I am rejecting this response because:  ***** ****** has my number and email.  I asked repeatedly for assistance and to speak to management.  I was denied. Never did management contact me. Instead they had their lawyer send an email and a letter by post telling me to cease as Erie feels they completed my house. I have a leak in the roof...coming into the ceiling of a bedroom.  They said they came to my house...without my permission on their admission...and took pictures?  So now trespassing on my property too? I wanted my house to be safe. They destroyed it. I had a home inspector come again to video the damages.  Where do I go now that Erie not only abandoned my house during contract again?  Police to file a complaint?  Local new station to inform the community to beware? They won't look at their third contract...or the warranty. All are worthless as the company pushed itself through lies and manipulation.

      Sincerely,

I can't begin to tell you how much time, stress, issues, anxiety, and aggravation I continue to have dealing with Erie Construction Roof... *** *******, Branch Manager, was who I negotiated with. The salesman/Factory Rep was ***** ************, and ***'s his boss. The Erie Construction salesman, *****, did not do his job and go up on my roof, even after I offered him a ladder. He did walk to the back of my property to look at the back half of the roof. ***** reported that there were 2-3 layers of existing shingles to his company. Apparently, there were 5 layers of roof shingles not 2-3, including the original layer from 1910. The crew that came 6/4/2021 to start removing my old roof, started on a neighbor's home across the street around 7:30 a.m. They were ripping off roof shingles at the wrong house! There was no supervisor present and the workers spoke basically no English and just shook their heads. On, 6/7/2021, **** ******, Installation Manager, from Erie Construction, stopped by around 9:30 a.m. to get documents signed. The one had $17K vs. $12K so I wouldn't sign it, which would have made me responsible for the $5K+ difference. **** came back later with the corrected documentation. **** also brought two guys to caulk and put new leaf guards on as they discarded the old ones. The gutters need to be checked for shingle scraps. I have an extension gutter that is full of scrap. On 7/1/2021, *** *******, Erie Construction Service, and **** ******, two Erie Construction Supervisors, came out to see the leaks in my kitchen ceiling and told me Erie Construction was not responsible. They blamed the leaks on the material on a big, flat section of the back roof. I wonder if the flat roof square footage was figured into the original quote I’m paying? However, it only started leaking after they finished putting on my new roof! It was literally raining on my kitchen furniture and floor and I had to put a bucket down to collect the stream of water leaking from my ceiling. I have a video of this on my cell phone that was texted to Erie. On 7/14/2021, at age 67, still recovering from extensive back surgery, I went up on the roof with a ladder to figure out why it was raining in my kitchen ever since the new roof was installed in early June. I found a 4" diameter hole, completely open and I could see the layers of shingles left behind as well as how open it is. I had a bucket of Flex Paste and went up on 7/15 to seal the hole because severe thunderstorms were predicted for the next 30 hours. Apparently, this stopped the raining in my kitchen. My new drywall, texturing, and paint job from 2017 are completely ruined. The ceiling sags, there are tears and cracks, and yellow streaks and patches, e.g. in the corner above the utility room. On 7/20/2021, according to Brett, my home's Liberty Mutual Claims Adjustor, the Ohio Code required Erie Construction taking off all of the shingles. I’ve attached photos for reference... I have two voice mails on my cell from **** ******, ************, detailing how they were coming out soon to fix the hole and roof, but haven't heard anything from him since his voice mail on August 30,2021. ****'s plans were to take the section up, put in new f lashing, lay shingles down, take up part of the low roof, and redo the area to make sure it doesn't leak. See the email sent to *** ******* on 8/4/2021 regarding the roof hole. I got an estimate of $1,275 from a drywall company to fix my kitchen ceiling and emailed it on December 22, 2021, to *** *******. I had requested Tim send me a check for $1,275. There has been no response to date. When they cleared my roof, way too much of the shingle scraps went into my attic, soffits, gutters, down spouts and landscaping. I'm still cleaning up way too many shingle scraps. I have a bag that I personally picked up from the front corner of my house in April 2022, where there's a big bush, irises, and other perennial plants. It weighs over one pound and I'm still finding more scraps of all sizes. I spent at least two hours doing the painstaking clean-up of these shingle scraps. I'm very concerned about the substrate/boards under the layers of shingles. By removing all five layers of shingles, the original, 1910, horizontal slats/boards were exposed. There are gaps between them, not to mention several large holes. Erie Construction had to completely cover my roof with 4’ x 8' boards. *** *******, the Erie Construction Branch Manager, asked me if I'd help out for the additional expenses. I reminded him of our agreement, which was they were responsible for whatever they found up there and I would not be financially responsible, except for our agreed price of $12,478.1 pointed out to Tim that *****, the salesman, should have gotten up on the roof and checked it out. Tim asked me not to remind him! I'm most concerned about mold, to which I'm extremely allergic. I want someone, not anyone from Erie Construction, to inspect and pull some of the panels off in my attic to make sure the insulation is not wet and getting moldy, nor covered with shingle scraps. More importantly, to have all of the single scraps cleaned up. TH basically have to spring clean my attic, pull the panels down and then put the panels back. There must be an abundance of shingle scraps on my insulation, for the debris to be all over my attic. The workmen originally put a tarp over the big bush in the front of my house, directly under the edge of the roof, but took it down, for what reason I have no idea. I came out to the front of the house and noticed that the bush was almost bent over by 90 degrees and had lots of scraps I had to pick out. They put some other tarps down that were full of holes and rips and didn't even cover everything. I've put down plastic and marble chips around my house which are full of shingle scraps because they didn't cover them. They covered up my rose bushes and other flowers on the left side of the front of my house, but threw tons of shingle scraps on top of them. I finally had them put my porch chairs between the rose bushes to prevent any more damage. There were many major branches broken off my rose bushes and 8 other plants were completely ruined. One day, I was sitting in my office and heard a big “thud". So, I went outside and a piece of the soffit had fallen open and a big pile of shingle debris was lying on my sidewalk and landscaping. Two Erie Construction employees came to clean it up. One of the Erie Construction guys left carrying a contractor trash bag, which was 25-30% full, probably weighing 30-40 pounds. After Erie Construction came and cleaned it up, they had a new section of soffit installed. I just noticed around the beginning of April that the new soffit section is bulging in two places. I would like another, independent roofer to come and examine all of my soffits, gutters, and attic to ascertain how much shingle debris there still is all over my home. In the attic, there was a big amount of shingle scraps, which they cleaned up from a big hole in the roof. I have a photo from inside the attic looking into the sky through the hole. However, wherever I go in the attic, there are more shingle scraps on my storage totes, clothes, carpets, etc. all over my attic. I'm confident there's a lot more shingle scraps based on what I've seen even with the paneling intact. Pm concerned about how much is on my insulation as well, above the paneling. More importantly, Tm especially concerned if there is any mold because of the severe reactions I have to mold. I’m afraid to remove the paneling in my attic for fear of more debris falling all over everything I have stored up there, which is a lot. My entire attic basically needs to be spring cleaned! Also, there’s a corner exposed on the right front of my roof. I expect Erie Construction to pay for all of the needed inspections, damages, clean-ups, repairs, etc. to my property, as well as 42 hours of my time [to-date]. I should also be compensated for the duress, stress, anxiety and frustration caused by dealing with all of the issues Erie Construction created that Pm still dealing with... NOTE: I have photographs, voice mails, videos, emails and other documentation of everything since the beginning and have attached accordingly...

We hired Erie Home to finish our basement in April 2016. We just sold the home which requires City inspection of the work performed by Erie, revealing major issues with the quality of workmanship in accordance with City code. We were ensured that all permitting would be taken care of and the finish would be complete in accordance with code and it was not. We have had to retroactively apply for a building permit, install sheetrock to cover high-voltage wires in the remaining unfinished portion of our basement that were left exposed, hire an electrician to install two additional smoke detectors to our home’s interconnected system, install an AFCI protected circuit breaker for the added bedroom, require numerous outlets were not grounded correctly, and in one room, correct a wiring issue where outlets were wired directly to the light switch so that they only worked when the light was on. We were unaware of all of these issues until the work was inspected by the City to issue an occupancy permit for the sale of the home.

On March 18, 2022 we had a roof installed by the Albany branch of Erie Const.. Prior we were subjected to a heavy pressure sell "If you decide not to sign today, the deal goes with us." We did like the ice shield offered and the supposed roof shingle quality. My point here: if the product is so quality, why the hard sell and the games? Ok, we paid for a premium roof. After the signing, we had two other bidders come for comparison. Your "deal" was $5000.00 more. We were told not to share the offer, hahaha, no chance! The roofers came, spread tarps and were done in a day. Job complete at 7pm. Dusk. The next day I picked up a cereal bowl full of nails, shingle pieces, metal, and plastic strips. (first frustration) And I noticed a large chunk of broken gutter. I called the project manager. He said he would send someone out. A van pulled in, no one came to the door, a man walked around for maybe 5 minutes with a grabber and a bag and left.(2nd) I called the project manager. He claimed the man could not find any gutter damage. (I have a photo) I let P.M. know the man never announced himself. P.M. said, " I will have someone out by the end of the week to repair gutter." Never happened. Never heard back from P.M. (3rd) In the meantime, I have picked up another quart bag of nails, plastic, shingles, etc. (4th) and I found that the cap to our wood stove is knocked off. (5th) Lawn was ripped up (6th) I called our salesperson. Asked for a refund. Six weeks after the roofing job, I signed a paper for a $159.00 refund. Better than nothing. Salesperson knows of the chimney cap. He has verified that it was intact when they did the photo shoot prior to the roofing job. In the meantime, rain and a bird have come in! This was a high pressure sale for a premium product. However I am not getting premium follow-up. FYI-In the meantime, we have had two other house projects started and their issues resolved. No recommendations for this package deal from this home owner.

The salesmen came out took pictures and sent them to the project manager. The project manager then comes up with a number of what my roof would cost. After speaking with all involved we were advised to get a framer to look at the roof because of the age of the home. Two days later was told to not worry that they could do it. Signed papers on a Sunday and the roofers were there the next Monday. What a mess from there on out. Damage to the house while removing the shingles. Wrong color drip edge installed, because of not enough product so they made their own decision. Then to find out there is no underpayment placed to protect the ridge line. The shingles were not nailed in the nail lines provided on the shingles. This is just the start. I get a 30 year warranty and will be needing an entire new roof in 5 ??disaster !!!!!! To top it off way to much product was ordered, I have 14 sheets of plywood and 17 packs of singles left in my yard uncovered from the elements. Can’t get a return call from anyone!

Businesses are under no obligation to seek BBB accreditation, and some businesses are not accredited because they have not sought BBB accreditation. BBB charges a fee for BBB Accreditation. This fee supports BBB's efforts to fulfill its mission of advancing marketplace trust.
