Warranty denied when it clearly states shingles can handle wind 130 mph when we didnt get that

Hello, after a review of your claim it appears it was claimed for both granule loss and blow off. Granule loss over the life of your shingles is considered normal wear and tear, the lab did not see any excessive granule loss for the age of your roof. Regarding any blow off, the shingle you have installed on your roof (Supreme) has a wind resistance of 60 MPH, if fastened correctly. Based on the review of the photos, you can clearly see the fastener placement well above the common bond area of the shingle. Based on this information the claim has been denied.

Had a roof leak and my roofer determined the shingles were faulty sealing and were still under warranty. I contacted Owens corning in July 2023 and was told it would be considered a manufacturer defect. They would reimburse me $150 to have my roofer remove a few of the faulty shingles and submit my pictures and statement from roofer. I could go ahead with repairs to fix the leak to prevent damage or wait on the claim to be processed. I was told due to proration I would be entitled to approximately 76% of the cost of materials. I had my roofer do the repair and the leak was fixed. He also found that the left over package of original shingles also contained some faulty shingles. Owens denied my claim #********, saying that it was due to improper installation and out of warranty. Tried to get answers from Owens corning but seemed to be given run around. I spoke with the area sales manager ******* who tried to help but then I no longer was getting a response from him. My roofer, BBG enterprises *** ******* , also tried reaching out to Owens corning as well as sales reps but was unsuccessful. I feel that I should be given the $150 Owens told me as well as 76% of the cost of the shingles that needed to be replaced.

      Hello -

Claim ******** was opened up for Non-Seal, the wind warranty period for your shingles are 10 years. Blow off outside of 10 years is not covered per the terms of your warranty. Additionally, you submitted photos from left over shingles, these clearly showed sealant was applied to these shingles. If you believe there are any additional issues with your roof, we would request clearer and better photos of your roof for review. Blow off and non-seal are no longer covered. Per the warranty we will reimburse up to $150. A check for the contractor coming out will be mailed out.

      Thank you.

Hello, I have attached the packet that specifically states what is required for your claim. You spoke with our claims department at which time you were informed of all documentation that was received. We also stated that we could not located who *** was based off of your original BBB Complaint, as the original complaint did not provide us enough information to locate your claim or determine who "***" was. We cannot speak to what *** may or may not have said, however to proceed with your claim we need all the information listed in the packet along with the two shingle samples to be sent in. Owens Corning does not have anyone that comes out to remove the shingle samples, that is why we suggest working with your original contractor to assist.

Genius Home Exteriors Roofing division replaced my shingled roof with Owens Corning shingles. Their quote was higher than most, but I thought that would hopefully ensure higher quality. They were supposed to replace a piece of plywood that was warped, that did not occur. I had a ridge vent which the eliminated (not at my request). This warped wood caused the shingles in the back of the house in one area to severely lift. The company came out and agreed the ridge vent should be reinstalled and the bottom two layers of shingles in the entire back of the house replaced. They did replace the ridge vent promptly to their credit. However, they had to get the shingles from their warehouse, I was told that would occur 2 weeks ago. I called and was told that was a mistake and the shingles would be picked up the following week . I called that week and was told the repair would occur Friday, October 27th at 11AM. When they didn't arrive I texted the manager and was told the were running behind. I called at 1PM and was told they were still running behind, but the repair would be done before the end of the day-----they never showed up and never called to explain. Terrible communication and follow through especially in lieu of the price I paid! They sent a subcontractor the following day to complete the repair a company Big AL Remodeling. They would not do the repair because they said with the warped piece of plywood the same problem would occur. They could not reach the manager of Genius Exteriors so left my house. This reflects poorly on them and Owens Corning as they are an authorized dealer of Owens Corning.

Unfortunately, the contractors that install these products are independent contractors and do not work for Owens Corning. We cannot require that they come back out to make any adjustments/fixes. I am rejecting this response because: Owens Corning provides and advertises Home Genius as Platinum status, which contributed to my decision to select this company to install a new roof. Therefore, it is my opinion the hold some responsibility and liability for insuring that this repair is completed. I am prepared if necessary to involve my attorney , but was hoping and that would not be necessary. I'm asking them to reach out to the company and relay that, Genius Home Exteriors is at risk of loosing Owens Cornings claim of their being a Platinum status provider. Thank You

Hello, any time a claim is opened, Owens Corning requires all of the same documentation for every claim, this includes two full size shingle samples to be removed. The shingle samples provide valuable information to Owens Corning along with confirming the product is just that, Owens Corning material. The $150 reimbursement to remove and replace the area ,this is an accommodation made by Owens Corning and assist the homeowner, anything outside of the $150, the homeowner would be responsible for. Unfortunately, we do not have representatives that come out to inspect or assist with the removal and replacement of the shingles. We apologize for any inconvenience.

      Complaint: ********

I am rejecting this response because:  this policy of requiring the homeowner to remove and replace shingles in order to submit a warranty claim is unconscionable ad is not part of the policies included in the warranty.  In fact the expressed complaint has a box to check which I did which authorizes OC to obtain a third party to execute these shingle removals

That the poicy will CONSIDER reimbursing the homeowner $150 is also unreasonable as no qualified contractor that I contacted would take this job for less than $500 and required a release from liability for any impact on the integrity of the roof and associated warranty

I purchased the highest end Platinum Protection Roof System warranty which is written as a lifetime warranty.

OC claims it needs the shingles removed ONLY to obtain the alphanumeric codes on the underside of the shingles (Homeowner does not send them to OC).  I am to take pictures of that code.

That information should have been collected and recorded on installation.

      Sincerely,

As previously stated, the $150 is an accommodation to assist you the homeowner. The $150 will be paid out at once a final determination is made, either approved or denied. The photographs are not required at installation, as there would be no claim at the time. Thank you.

      Complaint: ********

I am rejecting this response because:

Company continues to cite policy that requires homeowner to remove shingles and obtain and reinstall new shingles

THIS was not part of the warranty and in the complaint an option is provided for OC to obtain a third party to do this which i CHECKED as acceptable.

Note again that OC does not require the shingles nor will it send its representative on scene.  It needs that alphanumeric code on the back of the shingles

This could and should have been recorded at installation in case a warranty claim arises afterinstallation.  Then none of this would be necessary

What OC needs to address is a policy that contradicts the warranty and places an unreasonable burden on the homeowner.

Had this been included as part of the warranty claim process at time of sale i for one would not have purchased this product.

No other roofing materials company of which I am aware places such a burden on the homeowner.

They all would send an authorized representative on site.
Bottom line--the policy OC cites contradicts its warranty and laces its responsibilities on the homeowner.

Shingles were installed on my house within the warranty period and had significant color variation on front main roof. A claim was filed with Owens Corning which resulted in Owens Corning concluding that their product failed resulting in the color variation. The warranty offer received to resolve the issue was to replace the roof where only visible from the street and to keep the existing roof where not visible from the street. When asked if they could guarantee a color match to the existing roof, Owens Corning responded that they could not match the existing roof due to fading. This is unacceptable to me as the failure in the product resulted in my roof being two different colors and the proposed resolution would also result in the roof being two different colors.

Owens corning admitted in writing that their product had a manufacturing defect and are unwilling to resolve the issue properly which would include a full roof replacement to ensure no aesthetic issues. Had their product not failed, my roof would be one single uniform color and no warranty claim would be necessary.

      Business Response

Hello **** - based on the review of the claim it has been noted you are already disputing the determination that has been made and a Drone flight has been requested. Per the terms of the warranty (attached), please see How Long Are You Covered 1. "...our compensation to you will be 100% of material and labor costs, as reasonably determined by Owens Corning, to repair, replace or recover defective shingle..." Therefore, the warranty is applicable to the material that is considered defective and would only cover that section.

      Customer Answer

      Date: 08/01/2023

      Complaint: ********

I am rejecting this response because:

The "defective shingles" are causing a severe discoloration in my roof making it unsightly.  Owens Corning has agreed that there was a manufacturing defect in their product which has caused this issue.  The proposed remedy by Owens Corning is to replace sections of the roof only visible from the front of the house, this includes sections of the roof that do not have "defective shingles" but due to normal fading they will not be able to color match the existing roof to the newly replaced sections of roof.  Owens Corning wishes to leave the back side of my house in its current condition.  When asked if Owens Corning could color match the existing roof to the new roof to be installed I was informed that they could not due to fading on the existing roof.  This would result in half of my roof being dark black and the other half being faded black/dark gray.

Because the defective shingles caused my roof to be two different colors and the remedy proposed by Owens Corning would still result in my house being two colors I do not believe this solution is acceptable.  The only way to properly remedy the default that occurred in Owens Corning's product is a complete roof replacement.

Further, Owens Corning has offered $210 per square to repair, replace and install the new shingles on the sections of roof that they believe should be replaced.  In receiving various quotes from contractors, the labor rate per square to remove, and install these sections are approximately $450 (labor only) per square which puts me out of pocket $7,200 (($450 - $210) x 30 squares) to repair an issue caused by a manufacturing defect in Owens Corning's product.  My roof is extremely steep which results in a higher price for labor.

Its clear to me that Owens Corning is trying to remedy this issue as cheap as possible.  Rather than do what is right and take care of the issue that was cause by their defective material, they are trying to put a band aid on the situation.  This is unacceptable to me.  I already paid for and purchased a roof on my house which was built in 2014, I shouldn't have to incur any cost or live with any discolorations that have resulted in a manufacturing defect from Owens Corning.

      Sincerely,

      ******* ******

Hello - Based on the review of your claim it appears that you have already began to dispute the claim and a drone was scheduled to fly 7/31/2023. These photos take several days to process and be sent to Owens Corning. I believe it is in the best interest of both parties to wait until this photos are received opposed to the continual dispute. The labor rate we offer is a competitive labor rate, well researched to get the roof completed for the homeowner. If you have a labor only quote you can send that to ********************* which can be reviewed.

      Customer Answer

      Date: 08/01/2023

      Complaint: ********

I am rejecting this response because:

I want to document again that Owens Corning has admitted to a manufacturing defect in their product which has caused my aesthetic discoloration on my roof.  This is covered under their basic warranty.  Drone pictures are irrelevant to me and were requested by Owens Corning after my dispute to the proposed warranty settlement.   Additional pictures of my home were taken via drone by Owens Corning in an attempt to find defects on the back roof to justify replacement of that section.  Note, this occurred after confirmation that defects were found on the front part of my house resulting in the color deviation.  Owens Corning's settlement offer to me as noted before was to only replace shingles on the front of my house and leave that back part of my house with the existing faded roof.

My argument still stands regardless of the results of the additional photos.  Because the defects were confirmed on the front part of the roof, the only way to ensure uniform coloring throughout the entire roof is a total replacement.  Yes I understand this is expensive as my roof is over 4,000 square feet. However I already paid for that expensive roof 9 short years ago and expected better results from the Owens Corning product.  Owens Corning has confirmed that a color match is not possible by repairing only part of the roof due to normal fading on the existing roof.  Their proposal is to fix only the visible section of my roof from the street and to allow visual angles from the back of my roof to show color disparities.  Anything less than a total replacement will result in the roof being multiple colors which is unacceptable.  When I purchased the initial roof, it was one uniform color which is to be expected by consumers.  Owens Corning's product failed which caused the color disparity. Owens Corning needs to stand by their warranty and product and fix the issue rather than try to drag this process out and offer low ball settlements.

I will scan over the contractor quote for labor and I would appreciate if you could share contractors within the area that are willing to remove the existing shingles on a 12\10 pitch and install the new ones at $210/square (labor only) per your research.  I would be happy to contact them to get a quote to confirm this pricing.

For those consumers reading this, $210 per square of labor plus an estimated $150 / square of materials means Owens Corning believes that I can replace a 4,000 square foot roof (40 squares) in 2023 for $14,400.  I know I paid a lot more than that in 2014 to put the initial roof on. To say this is a low-ball offer is an understatement.

      Sincerely,

      ******* ******

Unreasonable warranty claim process that is obviously intended to discourage customers from filing a claim. The company is requesting I remove 2 full shingles from my house and take pictures of them. I have provided pictures of the algae stained roof, along with the original receipt as proof of purchase. Below I included a copy of my last correspondence with OC.

The process of filing a warranty claim is unnecessarily complicated. It is obvious that this is by design in hopes that most will just abandon the process, which drives down the number of claims OC has to process and pay. Removing two entire shingles from my roof, while not knowing if OC will even accept the claim is an unreasonable request. The pictures I provided are the leftover shingles I purchased when the roof was installed. If the code on the back of the shingle corresponds to a date produced in your system, you should be able to see that it aligns with the date on my receipt. I saved them in the event of storm damage so I could make a repair. The algae staining has been present for years, but I only recently became aware of the warranty. I had a roofing contractor attempt to remove a shingle using a flat pry bar and was only able to get a small 12" x 12" sample. The tar on the bottom side of the shingles has them solidly glued together. We stopped because we did not believe we could remove any more without causing significant damage, compromising my roof and would be unable to reinstall shingles in the place. I provided close up pictures clearly showing the significant algae staining. I provided far off drone images clearly showing the extent of the algae damage. I provided a receipt from the original purchase. I can mail you the 12x12 sample if you want. I will attempt one more time to remove two shingles. I do not believe Owens Corning is operating in good faith with their warranty process and will be filing a formal complaint.

      Regards,

Hello, requiring shingle samples has always been the process for Owens Corning's claims process. This is not to discourage the homeowner, this is to show verifiable proof that the shingles installed are in fact Owens Corning. Based on the review of the claim, the only item missing at this time is pictures of installed samples, pictures of front and back. Thank you.

I am rejecting this response because:

Asking a customer to remove multiple shingles from their roof to see if they might qualify for a warranty claim is unreasonable.  I provided pictures clearly showing the algae and an original receipt showing proof of purchase.  I had also registered the warranty when I purchased the shingles.  This would be like a tire company asking me to cut out a section of my tire to see if they would honor the warranty.

Removing the shingles compromises my roof.  Why are the pictures not acceptable?  If not, send a rep to review the roof without asking me to permanently damage my roof.

      Sincerely,

Hello, unfortunately we do not have representatives that come out to remove/replace shingles. Shingles can be removed and replaced, and if done correctly this will not affect the performance of your roof. We encourage you to work with a contractor that is confident in making a minor repair when the two shingles are removed to ensure there are no issues following the removal of these shingles.

I am rejecting this response because:

I stand by my complaint that the request is unreasonable.  I did have a roofing contractor attempt to remove 2 shingles.  He pried with a flat pry bar for several minutes trying to delicately remove the shingles without damaging the other shingles that the tar had glued itself to.  He was able to get one tab off of a shingle.  I have included the pictures of the roof that I sent to Owens Corning.  There is clearly algae on the roof.  I sent Owens Corning the original receipt from Lowe's when I purchased the shingles.  I also sent them pictures of the manufacture date code on the spare shingles I saved when we built the house.  They intentionally make it difficult in hopes customers will give up.  They are not operating in good faith.

      Sincerely,

This company is a sham!!! They make false accusations stating how high quality their products are - unethical and lies!

I filed a claim with them - claim number: ********

I have the warranty that was emailed to them and now they are backpeddling the scam artists that the warranty applies to a homeowner!

Warranties are aligned to the product of the roof not a homeowner!!! Warranties are not people specific scammers!

They called and refused to redo this roof - I sent data and pictures showing all this damage on the shingles for a 3 year old roof!!

I had the builders also do a report on this and validate the damage and that it would be to file a claim against the manufacturer!

Now Owens Corning won't own up to the fact their shingles are mechanical damage! Scam!

Hello, please see the attached Warranty Legalese. If you reference the third page regarding "Transferability" it explains that the subsequent homeowner must transfer the warranty within 60 days of of purchasing the home with Owens Corning shingles on it. Unfortunately, if this is not done within 60 days, there will no longer be a warranty covering the shingles. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you. We would recommend working with a contractor if any repairs/replacements are needed.

Owens Corning Platinum Preferred Contractor status is a scam to consumers that believe it carries any credibility in selecting a contractor to install a new roof. We hired ARAC, Roof it Forward to replace our roof, an Owens Corning Platinum Contractor. It has been an ongoing, dreadful, and costly experience. ARAC, Roof it Forward does not adhere or represent any of the qualities that the Platinum Preferred Contractor status claims. Appalling service, (6 months later, our roof is still not complete), they are over billing us for the roof and yet unwilling to provide an itemized invoice and have claims of "Additional Services" that they will not explain. Our property incurred over $5,000 of property damages as they do nothing to protect personal property and HVAC units, pool, grill, landscape lighting, solar lights, landscaping, irrigation system, exterior to house including painted brick and vents took significant damages. ARAC, Roof it Forward promised to finish the roof and repair / reimburse for damages and instead put a Lien on our home for an exaggerated amount!

We had the misfortune of believing the following misleading and untrue statements.
      * "Owens Corning Roofing Platinum Preferred Contractors are the top tier of a premier network of roofing professionals dedicated to service, reliability and professional craftsmanship."

      * "One way to find the highest, most reliable service providers is to check the Owens Corning Platinum Preferred Contractor network."

*ARAC, "Roof it Forward is proud to be among the elite 1% of roofers with this designation."

      * "Owens Corning only selects the best of the best for Platinum-Preferred status."
I have reached out to Owens Corning customer Service multiple times to help resolve the issue with ARAC, Roof it Forward, an Owens Corning Platinum Preferred Contractor and their swindling practices. The Platinum Preferred Contractor network is deceitful and needs to be abolished

****** - the complaint you called in about has been noted for this contractor. Unfortunately, the contractor does not work for Owens Corning nor does Owens Corning work for the contractor. The contractors listed on the Owens Corning website are independent contractors. We highly suggest continuing to work with the contractor through this.

I am rejecting this response because:

Owens Corning is affiliated with the attached you tube propaganda that misleads customers to believe that the workmanship and quality of their Platinum Preferred Contractors is credible. ARAC, Roof it Forward uses the Platinum Preferred Contractor status to influence and mislead potential customers.

The following excuse from Owens Corning of "Members of the Owens Corning Contractor Network are independent contractors and not affiliates of Owens Corning Roofing and Asphalt, LLC or any of its affiliates (collectively, “Owens Corning”). The decision to hire a contractor is a decision solely made by the homeowner." is not acceptable since the the decision to hire the Platinum Preferred Contractor was heavily influenced by the guarantees and suggestions made in the you tube videos and other websites that Owens Corning supports in their Platinum Preferred Contractor program.

I am asking that Owens Corning do what the videos and websites suggest, and inspect ARAC Roof it Forward workmanship and warranty of our Owens Corning roof.

      Sincerely,

Hello - The contractor is part of the Owens Corning Contractor Network. The contractors in this network are all independent contractors. They do not work for Owens Corning. If damage was caused by the contractor, you will unfortunately need to discuss that with them. Owens Corning cannot require/request to make a contractor go back out to a site. We urge you to work with the contractor.

I am rejecting this response because: I have been trying for over 6 months to resolve the completion of the roof, workmanship, property damages, and inflated invoice that includes additional services that ARAC, Roof it Forward is unwilling to explain. You Tube videos and websites promoting the Owens Corning Platinum Preferred Contractor status repeatedly promote Owens Corning inspection workmanship process, and vetting of roofers. ARAC, Roof it Forward has placed a Lien on our home and is unwilling to complete the job and resolve the property damages and is waiting for the sale of our home to collect an exaggerated amount for the roof. Your website also includes reviews from Guild Quality. I have not received the ability and right to review ARAC, Roof it Forward for the Owens Corning website and am requesting the ability to give an honest, and fair review. Hence, Please do what is promoted and inspect this Platinum Preferred Contractor and your product they put on our roof.

      Sincerely,

We went to Owens Corning website and looked at all the information on their website and you can easily find that if you hire either a preferred or platinum preferred roofing contractor off of Owen Corning's website you would get an extended warranty and a workmanship warranty. You can easily see that they have a requirement of what you need to get these warranties as you need to get a required amount of what they call roofing components.

Due to these warranties we hired our roofing contractor off this list and made sure to install all the required components needed. We then also conferred with our contractor that this was why we hired them and why we were concerned with using all these required components.

The Owens Corning recommended contractor that we used off of the Owens Corning website did not do a good job for us and when it rained we had damage. The contractor now states that he does not offer these warranties and does not have to. So I then called Owens Corning and they say they will not get involved, that it is just up to the contractor to be fair and that they have no consumer protection for the contractors and how they handle their Owens Corning warranties.

This I do not think is not fair and could maybe be a little better understood if you could find a little (i) link on Owens Corning website that I think was obviously hidden by Owens Corning on their website for some reason and this is part of my complaint.

I have been sent emails that were to Owens Corning and from our roofers and it was to inform me about some information they finally found on the website, I think it took three people to find it and two of them work for Owens Corning. It is an (i) link on their website you can not notice and if you print it for a disabled person you can not read what should be there and not hidden for some reason behind a (i) link. I think this was deceptive of Owens Corning and I think if you tell a Owen Corning referred/preferred contractor from Owens Corning website why they were hired and why they were using all the required components to get the extended warranty and workmanship warranties you should get it, Owens Corning recommended this contractor as being a preferred contractor from their website with the ability to do our roof right. We thought we were backed up by Owens Corning in knowing we would get a good contractor due to the Owens Corning workmanship warranty. Owens Corning is proud and boasts that their warranties are easy to read, but if you can not get the warranty due to the hidden paragraph this (i) link hides then I think this is deceptive. It should be easy to read just like they boast about the ease in reading the warranty. It is one small hidden paragraph and could have easily fit on the webpage but for some reason it is hidden.

Hello, unfortunately I am unsure of what link you are referring to. Owens Corning gives you, the homeowner, to work with any contractor you would like. The contractors listed do not work for Owens Corning. The contractor must be the one to offer the extended warranty. All information regarding extended warranties can be found on the website. On 4/5/2023, a customer service representative requested the proof of purchase to review and no documentation has been received. On 4/7/2023 you requested to open a warranty claim stating that there is granule loss, leaking, cracking, and not laying flat. Owens Corning still stands behind our product for a manufacturing defect. If the contractor did offer you an extended warranty, you would need to work with them to get your warranty registered as such. The claim packet was sent on 4/7/2023, if you need this resent please contact 1-800-ROOFING to obtain this.
