In 2006, roof replaced by **** ****** with Owens-Corning shingles with 50 year warranty. Now, roof shingles appear to be two different color lots, giving the appearance that roof has been patched or repaired. This appearance will negatively impact the future sale of my home.
Spoke with *** ****** in August, 2022. He stated he understood why the problem was an issue. *** ****** told me I should speak with ****** ******, since his name appeared on the original proposal. *** ****** informed me that he would tell ****** ****** to call me. He never called. 0n 9/29/22, I called **** ****** again. I left a message with the person who answered my call to please ask ****** ****** to call me. ****** ****** has not called me.
I am, therefore, filing this complaint.Business Response

I am rejecting this response because:
I called Owens Corning. They do have my warranty registration. I explained situation to rep. They do not have staff to come to my home and evaluate shingle problem. They request I hire roofer to send then shingle sample. I cannot afford that nor do I want to subject my roof to damage. I maintain that ****** installed two different shades of shingles resulting in current bad appearance . The roof has 50 year warranty. ****** has never returned mycall. ****** needs to be accountable.

Hello, the warranty process requires samples and photographs of the roof. You opened this roofing claim 11/1/2021 and were informed of all documentation required. On 4/20/2022, you had called to inform us a packet had not been received and it appears, it was sent using the same method and received. From the opening of your claim to yesterday, 5/18/2023, shingles being sent in have been a requirement. Owens Corning does reimburse up to $150 to have a contractor come to out assist with the warranty process. This is typically paid out at the end of the claim regardless of the determination, however if you need the funds immediately after having a contractor come out, that can be arranged, or Owens Corning will pay the $150 to the contractor directly. I apologize for the frustration.Initial Complaint

Hello, the claimant has been informed an inspection is forthcoming. The claim was opened on 11/2/2022 and all required documentation for the claim was not received until 3/8/2023. At this time additional photos were requested, that could not be sent in due to repairs that have already been made by the claimant. Therefore, Owens Corning Roofing and Asphalt believes it best to inspect. Getting a single inspector out can take time. We have requested the inspection to be expedited but, no guarantees can be made. Once there is an inspection date, Owens Corning will contact the homeowner with the date of inspection.

****** claim #************* Roof put on Oct. 11, 2022, Paid an extra $998 for upgraded duration shingles that are advertised to withstand 120 - 150 mph winds. They don't even hold up to 30mph winds. The roofing company has been to our home 8 times to seal these shingles down. Owens Corning sent us a check for $150 and said to wait until June 30, 2023 for the shingles to seal properly. That's ridiculous, shingles should be reliable year round. I think the duration shingles are a gimmick and falsely advertised, they have ripped in half and are not reliable in any type of storm. I don't feel our house will be protected at all when we get a really bad storm. We want our money back for these duration shingles and the inconvienence this has caused us! The contractor has replaced these shingles once because they felt we got a bad batch. The replacement shingles have done the same thing. These are just **** shingles! We want reimbursed for the shingles and the times we have had to continue to deal with this. 9th time now the roofing company Division 1 has had to come to our home to replace shingles. They were put on in Oct 2022 on a 70 degree day and haven't sealed yet but the cheap shingles on the rest of our home have sealed!Business Response
Date: 04/10/2023
Hello, please see the attached cold weather application letter. Your shingles requires consistent warm temperatures to seal. Unfortunately, the weather you experienced during install was not consistent. Owens Corning Roofing & Asphalt has paid to assist with handsealing the affected areas. Owens Corning Duration shingles have a wind resistance up to 130 MPH. For you claim, we do have a weathering period in place up until 6/30/2023. If by that date you are still experiencing issues, we request you send in updated photos to be reviewed.

On 9/29/09 the installation commenced by ******* *** of a Sunsuites sunroom, manufactured by Owens Corning. Last fall the sliding glass door, part of the sunroom, began to have problems opening/closing.
As the installers, Remodel USA was contacted and after getting the runaround with them I contacted Sunsuite on 12/22/22 regarding the issue. I spoke with **** who stated that the warranty was held by Owens Corning and stated he would refer my issue to one of their warranty representatives. On 1/4/23 I received an email from ****** ****** who stated he would be handling my issue. After numerous emails and my furnishing him with details and a photo of the issue, he informed me that he would have to verify the warranty. He also stated that the frame was the only defective part so they would furnish the door frame and I would have to pay to have the door removed, the frame replaced, and sliding glass doors put in place. I've never heard of a warranty company shipping a large part and expecting the owner to make the repairs themselves. Nonetheless, Mr. ****** confirmed on 2/14/23 the door was still under warranty and the frame was being manufactured and sent to me. It should be noted throughout this ordeal he was informed the door was progressively getting harder to open/close or lock leaving the home unsecured and the gap was causing our heating bill to rise considerably. Since 2/24/23 I have been periodically sending emails on updates to Mr. ******, the last one on 3/6/23, and to date have not received any responses. I also reached out to Sunsuite again and on 3/8/23 to Owens Corning with little to no resolution. The only response is I have to work with Mr. ****** who now seems to ignore my emails or concerns. I have been truly patient about this matter but I have reached my limit. I feel a manufacturer of doors should not be taking so long to replace a door frame standard in size and I should not incur the cost of replacing a defective part under warranty.Business Response
Date: 03/09/2023
Hello,
Thank you for contacting Owens Corning regarding the issue
with your Sunsuite. We are aware that the Warranty issue has been in progress
for your property, and apologize for the delays in production and
communication. Owens Corning does not manufacture the components for Sunsuites
any longer. Mr. ****** is the sole representative that coordinates between
Owens Corning and the manufacturer of the components to address any Warranty
related issued. Due to the manufacturing of components on a made-to-order
basis, the process can take quite some time. We will reach out to Mr. ****** to
ensure that he continues to be responsive through the remainder of proceedings
until your door frame arrives. Finally, Mr. ****** has advised you correctly
regarding the terms of the Warranty. Unfortunately, labor costs are not covered
per the Warranty terms.Customer Answer

Either give me the money to buy a new door or give me the door frame. I have not heard anything from Mr. ****** and he won't return my emails. If you can't deliver the door by May 15th then I want the money to buy a new door.

Hello - Owens Corning is no longer the manufacturer for this product. I've confirmed with Mr. ****** as soon as the door is completed, they will ship directly to the homeowner. Unfortunately, we are have done what we can from a warranty standpoint, but we do require some additional time as this comes from a third part vendor. Mr. ****** has assured us, he is pushing against the manufacturer to get this done in a more timely manner. Thank you for understanding.Customer Answer

I purchased my home on 6/15/2022. At the time of closing I was informed the home had a roofing warranty and they would get me the paper work. The warranty started in January 2022. However the previous owners did not get me the correct warranty information until February 2023. I contacted Owens Corning as soon as I had this information on 2/27 to inquire about the warranty. I was informed that if I called within 60 days, I could have transferred the warranty to my name. However, because it was past the 60 day mark, warranty could not be transferred. I informed the person that I was unaware there was a time-frame. This did not matter as they were standing by their 60 day time-frame. I cannot understand why the warranty is assigned to a "person" as the product and installation itself should be warrantied. Now, despite having a roof with a reputable product and company, I have no warranty because both product and labor is held by Owens Corning. Any issues I have must be paid for 100% out of pocket. Please explain why the warranty does not cover the product. Does this policy imply that somehow one "owner" is more responsible than the other and can therefore, be trusted more to take care of the roof? The product and labor is what is being warrantied; not the person occupying and/or owning the home. The only thing a policy/practice like this protects is the company; not the consumer or product itself. At this time I am very disappointed with Owens customer service and policies. I would like to see the warranty honored and transferred in good faith.Business Response

I am rejecting this response because: the individual circumstances of my case were not considered. I was unaware of the 60 day transfer window because the previous owner did not provide me this information until just recently. It is impossible for me to know about something I do not have. The warranty begin in January 2022 which barely makes it a year old. I made this complaint to the BBB because it is unfair for a business to treat customers like this. I'm hoping Owens Corning can be reasonable. I'm not the only customer that has been impacted by this. The policy is written in such a way to end warranties early without a consumer knowing. This is a poor business practice and one that all consumers need to made aware of.
Sincerely,

Mr *********, Owens Corning Roofing and Asphalt, is unaware of when homes are sold. Therefore, it would be the responsibility of the original homeowner to pass along the details of the warranty. I see you were informed of the warranty "...at closing..." in 2022. If the roof is installed with the previous homeowner living in the home they are the original homeowner. Once the sale of the home takes place, the warranty must be transferred within 60 days per the warranty legalese.Customer Answer

I am rejecting this response because: Owens Cornings response is not satisfactory. As I mentioned the 60 day transfer window was not shared with me by the previous owner in a timely manner. Therefore I never knew about it even though I asked for this information multiple times. This warranty is barely 1 year old and should not end because of this technicality. This information needs to be widely shared with everyone so they are aware of these deceptive business practices by Owens Corning. Again, this is why I brought the complaint to the BBB.

In April of 2012 we had a new roof installed and bought Owens Corning Duration Driftwood Shingles. These shingles were supposed to be the best on the market at that time and came with a 30-year warranty. I have recently learned that I have to have a new roof put on because these present Owens Corning shingles are falling apart. I have filled a claim with Owens Corning ( claim number ******** ) and yesterday received a letter from them saying my claim is denied because the wind guaranty has past. I had Owens Corning (OC) Oakridge Brownwood shingles installed on my house on 9/5/2012. 6 years 10 months later I explored having solar panels installed. The advertised life expectancy of the shingles was 30 years so I should have had over 23 years left. The solar panels life expectancy is 25 years. This would have put both the roof and solar panel life expectancies to expire near the same time. I made the decision to have Solar panels installed. I, in good faith, trusted that the (OC) product would last the advertised time, which is 30 years. On 11/7/2022 I had a certified roofing company visit to give me an estimate for a small branch that had fallen on my house when he informed me about the shingle defect. I was told that I should contact (OC) to get them replaced as the defect would shorten the life of the shingles. I created a warranty claim then uploaded over 30 images and required documentation to their server. (OC) sent a letter with their resolution offer. They offered to pay for 41 squares of shingles out of a total of 51 that I have covering my house. I did not agree this offer. I called the (OC) resolution specialist that was handling my case. She was polite but refused to make any exceptions to the offer. No matter what I said she kept reading scripted answers and was unable/unwilling to help me. I even asked to speak to her superior and was told that it would not change anything. (OC) offers a 10-year warranty, that pays 100 percent of material and labor costs, as reasonably determined by (OC), to repair, replace or recover defective roofing components. The time between the certificate of completion from the roofers in 2012 and the day I a roofer out who noticed the problem was 10 years, 1 month and 28 days. Since this problem was detected so close to the 10-year warranty period (OC) should make an exception. Just because the problem was detected 1 month, 28 days past the 10 year warranty doesn't mean it did not exist, it just wasn't noticed yetBusiness Response
Date: 02/06/2023
Upon investigation, this warranty claim was settled within the terms of the warranty in place at the time the material was installed. The warranty coverage includes 100% material and labor costs during the first ten (10) years after installation. After that period, the warranty covers material but not labor. When calculating material replacement costs, our warranty states will take into consideration the number of months the homeowner has enjoyed the product through the date of the claim. A copy of the warranty is attached. Owens Corning Roofing and Asphalt does not cover the removal and replacement of solar panels. We regret the consumers dissatisfaction with the terms of the warranty and/or resolutionCustomer Answer

I am rejecting this response because: Owens Corning does not care about the people who buy its products. As I have stated in my complaint, just because the defective shingle issue was discovered 1 month and 28 days beyond the 10 year warranty date does not mean the problem did not exist 2 months prior. Anyone can see by looking at the 30 plus images I sent them that the problem is pretty severe in many areas of my roof. I would think that any respectable company would stand behind their product and have no problem extending the 10 year warranty. I am uploading a couple pictures of defective shingles for reference.

I am rejecting this response because: This is exactly what I am talking about with this company. They do not evaluate each situation on a case by case basis.Instead, they just reply with a sterile and scripted response claiming how they are within their rights. A company that cares about their reputation and their customers would look at each case individually and react accordingly.
In both responses from the company they have made no attempt to resolve this matter.
They have people working labeled as Resolution Specialists when in truth they are just people paid to tell customers they can do nothing for them. A true Resolution Specialist would have the ability to make adjustments and exceptions.
I am disgusted that this company continues to ignore their customers in this way. This will only come back to haunt them in the future.

On 6/28/2011 I had a new roof installed. ********* ****** required a ridge vent to be installed for a re-roof permit. We purchased Owens Corning 30-40 year Duration shingles (45 squares), 60 feet of ridge vent and Duration ridge cap. In less than 10 years the ridge vent buckled and warped and, when snow was on the roof, began to leak into my attic. I noticed the leak when the paint on the ceiling and wall in my master bedroom began to bubble. It cost my over $1000 to have it torn out and repaired. I turned in a warranty claim #******** for the ridge vent. I jumped through all of their hoops; receipts, permits, proof of ownership, occupancy and a ridiculous amount of photos. They claimed the ridge vent is only warrantied for one year even though it is part of a 40 year roof. They kept asking for the same information repeatedly. I am a disabled senior and they expected me to climb on the roof and crawl in the attic to take pictures. They wouldn't send a company rep to inspect the damage and getting a roofer to come out to look at the damage was impossible, we live in a very rural area. I filed another warranty claim #******** for defective shingles. Both claims were delayed for months and I finally had to buy 10 squares of shingles and 60 feet of new wider ridge vent and 60 feet or ridge cap because it was going into winter season. It cost me about $3000 for materials and installation. In January of 2022 Owens Corning finally decided they would send me a voucher for one square of shingles that had to be presented to *****, where I bought my materials. Nine months later ***** has still received nothing back from Owen Corning. Their warranty is a joke, they decide the fate of their customer's finances all based on photos they make you take.Business Response

In response to the claimants comments in regard to their ventilation claim, we ask that all claims have sufficient photographic evidence of a manufacturing defect. Once we obtain the appropriate documentation we are able to analyze the product and work with the customer to resolve this issue.
