SInce VCA has owned ********************************* it has been a miserable experience. My allergic dog was given a Rabies vaccination that almost killed him. It would seem to me that a policy could be established for sensitive dogs to see what reaction would occur from the vaccines offered. Too lazy for that. Charges for treatment are now exorbitant also but willing to pay for good treatment. Had to move-on.VCA Animal Hospitals, Inc.

I have been a client at Veterinary Associates of Cape Cod , South Yarmouth, Massachusetts. for two plus years. I made it clear several times and it is in my pet's chart how allergic he is. I came to the vet to get a Rabies titer and was recommended the shot because of the law and problems treating a dog that is not current on Rabies vaccination. He received the shot and the rest of the day and night suffered from diarrhea and vomiting. I returned to the
clinic the next day for follow-up fluids and discussed with the vet about medication and his allergies. He wasn't much better in the morning so called the clinic asking for the earliest appointment. This is where the problem began. The front desk put me on hold regarding returning to the clinic and then shouted at me that "I had refused treatment". This was a continued comment even though I had not refused treatment and had been there the previous day getting "treatment". We arranged an appointment for several hours later but the dog was too ill to go. I also asked for the type of vaccine as there was no indication on the rabies certificate and I thought if I needed an emergency vet in the evening they would want to know type of vaccine Instead of telling me, there was again the accusation that I had refused treatment. Then my pet's records were sent to me (not requested) and in the record I was criticized for "refusing treatment" and being "upset". Well, my dog was dying at my feet so "upset" should be obvious. This caused me enormous stress considering I was calling for help and treated like a criminal for asking. Please correct the unfair records that disparage me as I will need to use them in the future for future care and negativity against me is completely unacceptable considering the appalling treatment I received. In the record it says I did not follow medical advice. This is not true. Since, this unfortunate event, I went to an emergency vet because of the uncomfortable treatment and disrespect I received. My pet was treated with fluids and is recovering although he is still very ill. A better solution than pushing a known vaccine that caused bad reactions in the past would have been an exemption written by the Vet. This was not offered although I know an exemption is a solution. A very sad event.. Please also note that while living n Tiburon, California I was previously a client of VCA Madera Pet Hospital in Corte Madera, California for six years and was NEVER treated in this manner at any time during an urgent matter or at any other time. Thank you for your attention to this matter. Mary RobinsonReview fromCharlene J

Do not take your animals here. A lot of hidden cost. The vet will not go over the charges with you before proceeding with anything. Most vet hospital like the ones in Edgewood will go over the charges with you before proceeding with anything. These guys will not evaluate your pet, then provide you with an estimate of costs for treatment, which you then agree or decline.VCA Animal Hospitals, Inc.

VCA Three NotchI ***'t understand why I was given a morning appt for a follow up after a weekend emergency visit, only to be called back an hour with their "minds changed," cancelling it and telling me to go to ER again. Huh? How could they determine that without seeing her at the initial scheduled morning appt? Our VCA had been monitoring my *** ****** for a year. I was always told if her rapid breathing returned to get her in right away, but when all three episodes happened in one year they were 'never available'. Sadly she suffered at home and died the next day in my arms. I will never be able to erase the image of watching her painfully die . Lots to be explained yet medical director seemed to defend the actions of her practice. Did VCA stop sending sympathy cards? Never got one.VCA Animal Hospitals, Inc.

First and foremost, we'd like to express our sincerest condolences to you for your loss. We would never want a client to feel let down by our team and service, so we hope to have an opportunity to speak with you about this matter. Please send an email to *********************@vca.com. Why would you offer to speak further about this? Your medical director, who was also our treating vet, phoned me with a rather defensive tone to the matter. No one wants to be held accountable there? Where's the sympathy card?
Your practice failed considerably.Review fromHeidi L

I've had a lot of concerns with our treatment and charges at our ***** *** location. I have gone so far as to contact the ************************* to help with a resolution and the local office was not willing to try and reach an agreement. We were initially quoted $4-6,000 upon admission with prices raising significantly every day until a final total of $16-20,000 was told to us. When all said and done we left with a $37,249.97 final bill. Because we are a family of 6 on one income who is on ******** and WIC we qualified for a ***** which slightly lowered our total. I have been fundraising nonstop to raise money for our dog's bills and literally selling everything we own and have been able to pay off a huge portion of our bill with a remaining balance of $12,856.23. Due to the payments sent directly to *** from several organizations the director of *** said she would halt the invoices until November. Yesterday in the mail I received a letter which I attached stated due to no payments in over ********************************************************* full. The letter also states I received billing statements and a collection reminder which I can assure you I most definitely did not. I have been through **** and back with the *** since my dog's care in March. I would love to escalate this as someone at the top needs to be aware of what is going on. Since March I have been working with the local office and to be honest they are the most heartless people I've ever met, at least when it comes to humans. I have felt pressured and taken advantage of this entire time. This office really does know how to manipulate people and feed off the love people have for their pets in order to rake in astronomical profits. They also refuse to release your dog to you unless half is paid up front. This company revenues over 9 billion a year yet takes joy in seeing a family with 4 small children suffer and go without basic necessities. They should be ashamed of themselves.VCA Animal Hospitals, Inc.

The location is in Omaha, Nebraska on Mockingbird Drive. But no matter who I speak to at the corporate level they keep sending me back to Laura Bates at the clinic where my dog was seen. I know she is in charge of that office, but my concerns have not properly been addressed by her. She has been civil and worked with us on a no interest payment plan as far as the other half owed to VCA, but that doesn't change the fact that we have interest on our maxed out credit cards we still have to pay and our care credit card- which thankfully that is no interest for 12 months. When I wasn't feeling heard at the local level, I contacted Heather Wipijewski who then had a meeting with Laura Bates to decide on a no interest plan. But when I initially expressed my concerns to Heather she seemed alarmed and said she was going to try and do everything she could to help. Then she had the meeting with Laura and the no interest on the half owed to VCA was determined was sufficient. I have been in tears with Laura Bates. I told her we had to pull our kids from all their sports, I'm at the food bank twice a week to feed our family, we have sold everything valuable. When the Attorney General was working on our behalf, Laura stated she felt the no interest was a reasonable resolution and it's not her fault we elected for care we couldn't afford. Had we been told the truth about the financial burden we sadly would have had no choice but to put our dog down, but we have a special needs son and Ivy was his dog and he needed her so we were willing to pay the 4-6,000 not ever imagining it would reach over $35,000. I have contacted every single dog funding/grant organization I can find on the internet. Only a couple provided payments in small amounts, which we are thankful for but it's pennies to what we owe. I contacted every single dog food company to share our story. Contacted the news, radio, social media influencers, Rachel Ray, Good Morning America. I posted Ivy's fundraiser everywhere. I exhausted every option I could think of. I contacted Chewy who was generous to send Ivy some toys and a new bed. I had numerous fundraiser garage sales and my kids had lemonade stands to raise money for Ivy. Laura Bates suggested I sell butter braids to raise money. I looked into that but for all the time and effort I wouldn't make much and I am home with my 4 kids one being special needs. I contacted disability rights to see if we would qualify for any assistance. Ivy's GoFundMe story and pictures were stolen and used by a woman in California who was making money off Ivy's story. I keep hitting dead ends and I don't know what to do. Last week I found another VCA contacted named Elizabeth Plumb who I emailed as well as left voice messages for, but I believe she forwarded them to Laura Bates because I received a letter from Laura saying the letter I received in the mail was automatic and I won't be going to collections as long as I pay November's bill. But collections aside, there are so many things that need addressed and I would love to speak to someone who would be at least willing to listen to what we have been through other than Laura Bates. My phone is XXX-XXX-XXXX if you'd rather reach out by phone. Thank you.Review fromMary H.

******* ** Location. After only a cursory exam of my pet, the doctor gave me three possibilities of how things could turn out based on the outcome of the test results (that they had yet to run). I expected to sign the standard forms authorizing treatment and another form that I would be responsible for the cost of all treatment. That's not what happened. After the doctor left, another staff member came into the room. She and I were alone in the room. They had one form for me to sign that would authorize treatment and make me responsible to cost of treatment. I didn't like that it was one form but ok. The problem I really had was that there was an "Estimate" at the top itemizing the price for all testing and treatment.....BUT the doctor said there could be three different outcomes. Why was I signing to be responsible for treatment the doctor hadn't even decided was necessary because they hadn't even run the bloodwork yet?! Specifically, I was signing to be responsible for $150 in undisclosed "Medication". We didn't even know if my cat needed medication yet!!! When I objected, the staff member became very cold and said flat out: "you have to sign this document or we won't treat your cat". My cat was having an emergency. Was I really going to price shop other veterinary clinics? Of course not. They knew they had me in a bind and could charge whatever they wanted for any reason. That's when it occurred to me. Why weren't we discussing this at the front desk like every other veterinary practice that has nothing to hide with its billing practices? Why was I alone in a small room with a ***** staff member pressuring me and saying: sign or else? This is the kind of shady manipulative practices you see in used car dealerships. I have never been made to handle things this way or been treated this way at any other veterinary practice.VCA Animal Hospitals, Inc.

Very Sad News
***** our Shih Tzu girl passed **** yesterday afternoon around 4pm.
I am completely devastated- she and I had a bond unlike anything I've ever known.
Her symptoms first started about two weeks ago - shivering - which we thought was from having her coat shortened after grooming and the change to cooler weather. We had her in her sweater to help keep her warm. Then we noticed an odd odor from her mouth a few days ago. She stopped eating on Thursday and was very lethargic. I took her to the vet yesterday. They diagnosed her with periodontal disease. They administered an antibiotic and a first dose of pain meds. Also gave us an appetite stimulant. Told me she needed dental surgery once the meds had worked. Schedule her appointment for 2 months later. At no time did the vet even come out to talk to me. The vet tech never even hinted that this was a critical matter.
I brought her home around 2pm and within 30 minutes she started to vomit repeatedly- I called the vet and took her back where they gave her an injection to stop the vomiting and gave me a med to coat her stomach. I came back home - the vomiting had stopped.
She seemed to be feeling a small bit better.
I got up to get a bite to eat and we were checking on her and couldn't find her! Finally I looked behind the couch and saw her "sleeping" so we didn't want to disturb her. When my step daughter came home she asked about ***** and I told her she was asleep behind the couch. She looked and said she thought something was wrong. I pulled the couch back and when I picked her up she was gone.
***** was the last bright light in my life.
Don't know if I can recover from this.
I'm absolutely convinced her death was directly attributed to unprofessional care by the vet..VCA Animal Hospitals, Inc.

The offending VCA setting was VCA Seaside in Calabash NC.
I do not understand how any "appropriate team" can have any impact short of dismissing the malpracticing veterinarian. Unlike medical doctors who have an oversight process that reviews and disciplines those unfit to practice the veterinarian profession has no such oversight. This leaves the public at the mercy of veterinarians practicing for higher profits over the welfare of the animals.Review fromAlan M

My dog ate something akin to a rock, and it almost killed him, shutting his GI tract down and causing him to have a seizure. Rushed him to the *** hospital in ****** Mesa as they are the nearest and only 24/7 facility. They stabilized him and then diagnosed the foreign object in the stomach, which they eventually were able to remove via endoscopy. All this was preceded by massive bills that required pre-payment and poor explanation. They then kept coming up with reasons to keep him overnight for thousands of dollars more each day with vague blood work results. Eventually got him out of there and he's 100%, and am taking him back to my regular vet for follow up appointments. They and another vet's office reviewed the final bill from *** and were shocked, letting me know I was being massively overcharged for every item on the bill, and that there were dubious charges involved as well. Buyer beware, they will play with your emotions and take you to the cleaners. I am happy they were able to save him, but I feel very taken advantage of as caring owner who they saw as an easy touch due to the emotional factors of this type of emergency. They should be ashamed.VCA Animal Hospitals, Inc.

What a relief, we were finally going to get to see specialist, *******************************, to evaluate a mass that was compressing on our pup's spine causing multiple deficits. Well, that's not how it turned out unfortunately, thanks to ************* Veterinary and ***************** Before the hour-long drive, our vet called ************* 3 and 4 times to make sure the doctors and staff knew we were coming, that we just needed to check in to stay the night so **************** could see our dog for an MRI in the morning. Well, so much for professional courtesy. When we arrived, we were not triaged correctly by the triage nurse. No priority was given to a dog with something pressing on his spine, exhausted and shaking in pain. Nor was any consideration given to the fact that absolutely no treatment was expected that night (we would not be tying up the doctors in any significant way!). We were just checking in so the specialist could see him in the morning. Since we weren't triaged for what the referring doctor requested, it meant we had to wait for every other dog to be seen. Finally, after PLEADING with the staff for someone to just see him and check him in (they said no), we were given an appointment and told to come back another day. But the appointment included NONE of what our doctor had discussed with us (neurology consultation, testing in the morning, prep for MRI, MRI, possible immediate surgery)! I'm sure we'll find out what more is missing from our poor guy's care when we finally connect with the specialist at our appointment (things you'd need a degree to know about, fortunately our vet arranged everything so carefully. Oh, wait...). But, needless to say, this experience doesn't exactly fill us with confidence in this trying time.VCA Animal Hospitals, Inc.

To be honest, I would've chosen zero stars if that had been an option. We've been taking our pets to ********** Animal Hospital for over 12 years, even after we moved from ******* to Suffolk. After our last experience 2 months ago, we are done with that place. We had an appointment for our cat's annual checkup. When I arrived at the animal hospital, I was informed that there were no veterinarians on the premises and that they would have to reschedule the appointment. When I asked them why they didn't call me in advance to reschedule, they had no answer. (We'd even received a reminder postcard about the appointment 2 days before.) I asked her when a veterinarian would be on the premises, and she said maybe next week, but wasn't completely sure. (How can you run a vet clinic when you go long stretches without even having a veterinarian on the premises or knowing when one will be available??) When I requested an appointment for following week (since THEY were the ones who dropped the ball on today's appointment), I was informed that the soonest they had available was TWO MONTHS AWAY. This is not the best way to treat loyal clients. My husband had to take off from work to take care of our daughter, and my cat was unnecessarily stressed out by getting put in a carrier and dragged to an appointment that didn't even end up happening. I now have an appointment scheduled at a different Animal Hospital that seems to be better coordinated and has more respect for its clients' time.VCA Animal Hospitals, Inc.
