1 starI booked a vacation with Amtrak in September 2023 traveling from NYC to Seattle. I was sold a "glamorous" vacation package by Amtrak Vacations, which I learned is separate from Amtrak Railroad. After being sold a so called "land vacation" that was supposed to be scenic and relaxing, with a gourmet menu daily and excellent cabin service, we boarded an uncomfortable, noisy and extremely uncomfortable sleeper car on the bottom of the train, making it impossible to relax or sleep well. There was nothing "vacationy" on this long train ride. There was no scenery, other than dusty, dry farm lands from Chicago to Washington state, with lots of broken down tractors and graffiti along the way, and the gourmet meals were TV dinners. The vacation brochures depict beautiful scenery, clean rooms on the train and trains that appear to smoothly roll through the countryside. It's all fake P.R. There is no such thing as an Amtrak vacation. Amtrak offers train rides and train rides only. Amtrak Vacations is fake advertising . They charge thousands of dollars for a vacation that is actuality just a long train ride. My husband is disabled. I believed the fake P.R. about this trip that ended up being a week of horror for him and me. If you want a vacation take a cruise or fly to your destination. Skip Amtrak vacations and ride coach, which is more comfortable than the sleepers on the train. Anything is better than Amtrak vacations . Amtrak Vacations is fake advertising and should not be legal . For us, it was the vacation from hell.Review fromR. R

1 starAmtrak was late on my way from Manassas to Philly AND in the way back. Filthy doesn't even come close! Urine running on the bathroom floors, seats covered in dirt, hallways with garbage. We are an advanced country? Who says!Review fromIris G

1 starI have been using Amtrak for years. I commute weekly between WDC-NY train canceled when we had a huge amount of rain few weeks ago without giving me an another option so I had to pay extra to get in another train even though my ticket was purchase 3 months prior to traveling.
Just last Sunday 8:20 PM train from DC- NY was delayed without letting us know in advance.
I booked few more trips last night to wake up this morning and finding out rules has changed so I won’t be able to modify any of my tickets that were booked by June, July or cancel any of the ticket booked last night without paying a higher fee.
I have more than 20 trips booked til end of March. How is that fair that I payed for these booking 4 months ago to find out I won’t be able to modify them if my work schedule changes.
Why we rely only in Amtrak why we don’t have other train companies like in other countries so we can choose the best service and not being in this situation.
This is not how any business will treat loyal customers.Review fromDEMARISE B

1 starAmtrak will not give courtesy credit. I feel like they stole my money. Spoke to representative to change date. Had to buy new ticket while on the train. They would not discount or change previous ticket. They are robbing me.Review fromYehoshoua S

1 starHi, my name is Yehoshoua S***** and I live in Newton MA. At 12 June I purchased tickets on Amtrak from 128 station to NY for today October 4th for the 8:31 AM train. I was very happy that it costs me only 62$ for both me and my wife.
In the last few weeks I got few solicitations emails urging me to upgrade to business which I ignored.
Until I said to myself, hey this is a company that is owned by the federal government. I should at least look into it. What it was is a bid for a seat on the business class on the train.
If you haven’t been on the business class car on the train, it is the last car and you have no reason in the world to believe that there are seats there that are inferior to coach.
Knowing that business class is what it means: far superior to coach, I entered a bid for the minimum bid of 40$. I wanted to surprise my wife, since we we’re heading to a cruise and I wanted to spoil her.
Two hour before the train boarding, I received an email that I won the bid. The seats were 16c and 16d…
This is deceiving because we had to seat while an isle was separating us. Not only that, these seats were special in a way that they had a table and other people were using their laptops and talking constantly on the phone. They had much less space than the regular coach cars…
They were by far inferior to coach seats and the whole experience was awful.
We didn’t want to move to coach since we had suitcases with us and that was too complicated.
I feel that I was scammed by Amtrak… these seats should have never been auctioned.
I am paying my taxes in full and if there is doubt I always pay more to leave no doubt.
This country was always great to me and I thankful for it and the American people.
This shame should be wiped out ASAP, it fits well the culture of Wall Street Charlatans selling snake oil to naive people.
This is not American this is not America!Review fromKeith C

1 starDON’T DO IT…here is my review of our trip from Florida to NYC…. It sucked from start to finish, $2,600 round trip for a horrible experience. We had a bedroom on a viewliner 1 on the way from Fl. to NYC and a viewliner 2 on the way back and both sucked. We had to stuff toilet paper and towels between the gaps in the doors that close off the two adjoining rooms, the cabinet doors, and between the ladders and the walls to keep them from banging and tapping. You will pull your back out when trying to clean your ass in that small bathroom and the toilet is so small an average sized man can not get his weiner inside the toilet while going number 2 (do note most pee and poop during the same seating). On the way up to NYC the shower would not stop leaking so there was always water on the floor and on the way back the toilet lid would not stay up as you were standing to pee and the bathroom door would come unlatched and open on its own exposing your ass to the world. Oh, and on the way up the closet door latch was broken. The new viewliner already has cracks in the fiberglass and even the staff said they do not like the new design. And OH there is this, all the way up and all the way back we enjoy the smell of sewer gas, aka shit fumes, and it took a day after each trip for it to clear out of our noses. The food also mostly SUCKED... burger was good, our breakfast was good (coffee sucked), and the mousse cake and cheesecake were good. The fancy LOOKING meals tasted like cheap frozen dinners. The tracks were horrible throughout most of the trip, we rocked around almost the entire trip. Nothing like paying $2,600 to experience a living hell. All of those a-holes promoting Amtrak on YouTube will find their little special place in hell alongside the Amtrak CEO and upper administration. Our family will NEVER ride on another Amtrak train and we will surely spread the word about our horrific experiences. And to think our taxes subsidize Amtrak…Review fromKevin C

1 starMy train broke down Sept 8 headed to Boston, we got kicked off the train an hour away from our destination with no resolution from amtrak.
I had to spend over 120 dollars in Ubers on top of the 100 I spent on train tickets.
I filed a complaint with the company and they never got back to me.
Our trip couldn’t even get us home so I had to take another Uber and a bus to get home. Still no word from Amtrak.Review fromLAURA W

1 starAMTRACK is disgusting.
My elderly parents got seats on an overnight train and Amtrak had oversold their seats so my parents did not get seats until 2am (after boarding at 6pm!). They were left to sit in the dining car surrounded by 20+ teenagers being rowdy and loud for 8 hours. Other people were in the same predicament in the dining car with them. They were told when people get off at other stops, they will get seat when they become available. They should have given the first available seats to elderly people but instead just randomly gave it to several other parties (young couple in their 20s, young family). I called them and left messages and emailed and was begging for someone to help my parents. I never received a call or email back to this day. My poor parents. They had never taken the train before and had heard it could be a fun experience. It was a NIGHTMARE. I am so disgusted they would treat elderly people like this. They could care less about our complaints or requests for help. I would never give them a cent of my money and I hope nobody else does either. Buyer beware. You can buy and pay for reserved seats and get POOP for it and your complaints will fall on deaf ears.Review fromAntonia S

1 starWorst travel experience ever! The staff was beyond rude! The train is not family friendly. The amount of times the staff told me and my family that our kids were too loud. At some point the kitchen lady told my sister to keep her one year old from screaming to use her inside voice. A 1 year old is supposed to understand? The staff was aggressive and hostile. No hospitality skills whatsoever or patience for familys with young kids! And they advertise as a family friendly train! Never again will I come back!Review fromBradley S

1 starHorrific customer service experience.
I'm traveling to another city today to see a show, visit some friends. Amtrak informed me my train was delayed a full hour, which would ruin my plans.
I called to swap to another train that'll get me there on time (there are two). The first is sold out, the second is the Acela, which requires a +$150 upcharge, doubling the total price of my round trip.
Amtrak's stance was, take it or leave it, they would offer no discount/accommodation. Despite the fact that I booked a train that would get me there with extra time, and had to change due to their lapse in service. Unbelievable. Their only recourse? "Pay us for the more expensive ticket then beg corporate to reimburse you." My hopes are not high.
Should have flown.
