Do not recommend buying a car via private sale through Autotrader. What would make sense is for Autotrader to require a vehicle inspection by an authorized dealer before sellers are allowed to post a car for sale. The vehicle I received is not covered under the platinum power train warranty even though it clearly states each issue the vehicle has in the fine print. Luckily, they redeemed themselves on the warranty side by refunding my payment towards that. The seller listed in the description that the vehicle needed front wheel bearings and tires. I took the vehicle to an authorized dealer less than two days after the sale. The mechanic told me to my face that the car is NOT safe to drive. This was exceptionally upsetting considering I drove myself and my toddler 1.5 hours home from the seller in a big thunderstorm. The dealer concluded that the vehicle needs over $8,000 worth of work. The seller was dishonest and Autotrader does nothing to protect buyers. I will never recommend this company and will make sure everyone knows.

All dealers with low ball offers and no private party on there. This is a horrible company save your money and time.

These guys sand-bagged me MID-SALE about not having my paperwork up-to-date, which it was because I wouldn't have been able to initiate a sale otherwise. Also - they have NO customer service after-hours?! Nothing is said about this - how can I sell a car outside their business hours? They left me and a seller (whose money they took, without clearing the car - leaving us both upset) - you know, the exact situation they claim to avoid. The woman who sand-bagged me is a SCAMMER - This company is run by crooks and their app DOESN'T WORK! It doesn't WORK AT ALL! You can't access your own dashboard in the app! AVOID THIS SCAM SITE AT ALL COSTS!

Dont do it. We were out of town (7 hours) when we initiated purchase. My credit Union sent them tracking information and all pictures needed to leave with the vehicle. Then the seller is told at 3pm, sorry title **** is closed cant make the deal until Monday. Luckily the seller let us take the vehicle. We then opted for a month warranty for peace of mind on the trip home. Guess what, we made it home without any other instructions to have it inspected, luckily they refunded the warranty. That brings me to the next step. We purchase June 12. On July 7 I reached out asking about the title and registration. We were informed it would be mailed within the week. Mind you the temp tag expires July 25. So July 21 rolls around, nothing. I emailed back asking about it and this is the response We are emailing you out a new temp tags to your email ******************* tags will be delivered by end of day today. Your paperwork is being processed and may take some more time, please be patient with us.Is the email on your deal page still valid?Thank you,***************************** AutoTrader Vehicle Title SpecialistI emailed back stating yes. Today is July 25, 2 days before my temp plate expires, still no extension, still no paperwork, still no tag. What a complete cluster fug.

A horrible business. Took them almost 2 months to ship me my paperwork to get my car registered. When it showed up it was wrong. Ive talked with them 4-5 times on the phone: they are rude and unhelpful.

I have continued to have problems with Autotrader.com not showing all my photos for a 2021 Dodge Challenher **** Pack. I have made 7 attempts to resolve this. The ad id is: *******. When I do a private party search outside the confinement of 'manage my ad' I only see 5 of my ************************************************************************** my life. Plus the only responses I get are scammers who either want to send you a bogus cashiers check and pick up your vehicle before you cash it or idiot's that try to entice you into doing a phony vin check where you pay an average of $35 never to hear back from anyone again.

Shame on Autotrader. I used to love this site. Now I am forced into using their online exchange simply to buy an ad and list my car? This wasnt explained and will be shared with the *** given that its a gross misrepresentation. Ill just kiss the $49 goodbye and go to a competitor because Im not about to simply connect my bank account. They must be insane. Terrible business strategy.

I bought a vehicle almost 8 weeks ago on AutoTrader Private Seller Exchange. Autotrader's site said I did everything I needed to do, and to just wait for my plates in the mail. Then, about the time my temporary tag was expiring, I got a packet of forms to fill out. It was all really suspicious. It came from "NewWorldAuto" (which I guess is the legal name of Autotrader?) the Odometer Statement form was from ****************, I was supposed to send the packet to a place in *******, and the purchase itself (both buyer and seller) are in **************. It wanted me to give like 40 people power of attorney. There was a registration to do list that said I needed to email my insurance documentation to a mystery email address (the domain was tred.com, which certainly doesn't look like AutoTrader). I tried contacting AutoTrader support but I never got anything back. I emailed the email address asking if it's legit, they didn't reply. Finally I just emailed me insurance documentation (it's been almost 8 weeks and I'm pretty sure I don't own the car I bought yet)... and they finally email me back asking if I'm sending the rest of the packet. I responded back with questions which were promptly ignored.Anyway, this whole thing is an absolute mess. The website process itself seemed great, but the website instructions don't really reflect what's really happening. Now my lender is sending me threatening letters because they don't have the title too.So yeah, stay away from them. Or find a private seller on AutoTrader and buy it the old fashioned way, not through AutoTrader.

Placed an add for my classic vehicle and started receiving messages within a week and was dealing with 3 potential buyers. After exchanging numerous emails and text messages, started receiving bogus cashiers checks the following week exceeding the amount of vehicle. This is a classic scam and waste of my time!!! Dont know why AutoTrader doesnt screen potential buyers more closely to protect their customers, asked for refund and was given basically nothing back!!! Totally unacceptable and wont ever be using this service or recommending it to anyone!!!

What a horrible idea. I have used auto trader for years. This new private seller system is ridiculous. I had no idea it was required when I listed my car. Do not waste your money. It forces the buyer to buy the car online which is the very reason they are using auto trader as the buyer does not want to buy online. What auto trader was thinking is beyond me. They want all your personal information as well as title copy and then take a percentage of the sale! I want my money back! I feel misled and ripped off! I am sure your competition loves your new system!
