I don’t have the energy anymore to write another horrible review. I’m writing this as I’m on hold with them AGAIN for a problem they created and have yet to deal with. The customer service is incompetent, unreliable, and impossible to get ahold of. I applied for a new repayment plan back in June and have had to call SIX times with a total hold time at this point of about 8 hours total because of problems this company has created and continue to create on my account. I got approved for a specific amount in a new repayment plan. Not only did they not update my auto debit like they said they would TWICE, but someone on their end decided to manually change the number I was approved for and increase my auto debit without consulting me or getting approval. This company is horrible, and I wish I could give a zero-star review. Still on hold….

Recently got changed to Nelnet. Waited for almost 3 hours until hanging up because I had stuff to do. I sent them an email back in October 2023, still haven’t received a response back. (Jan 2024)

I did receive an email about how I was on a forbearance due to getting onto SAVE. I log into my account today and lo and behold, I owe them money during a forbearance. They never sent me an email my payments were due either. I know it’s not the same amount with my SAVE either. It’s whatever Nelnet had when student loans started back up again. Even after they confirmed I was on SAVE, they sent me emails for months that they’re still working on my IDR plan.

I never had issues with Great Lakes. Easily got a hold of them via email or phone call. Able to pick a specific date for repayment on their website. Never once said I owed them money during a forbearance.

Based off of reading reviews, it appears even if I ask them to change the due date, they won’t do it. Not exactly surprising considering they’re not honoring the forbearance on my account.

This is absolutely shady. Something needs to be done with their negligence.

      SCAMMERS!!!! Avoid at all costs.
I received a letter today from Nelnet along side the US Department of Education letterhead. Deceptive! The letter was from their "Total and Permanent Disability Servicing Unit" on how I can get my student loan forgiven. I haven't had a student loan in many years. And they listed no student loans on the letter. Yet they asked for all sorts of information about if I had a disability and evidence to support it. Not today scammers. You get no information from me whether I have health issues or not.
Other red flags in the letter:
      - No phone number to contact Nelnet, but yet a lot of info on how to contact the Department of Education. They make this appear to have come from the government.
      - Nelnet.com is not a government website
      - The letter also references disabilitydischarge.com. Also not a government website AND it's registered in Great Britain.
      - For email about disabiltydischarge, you contact someone at nelnet.com. Odd.

Customer service support is terrible, I have called at least half a dozen times at different times of day and have been on hold for 45+ minutes each time and have yet to reach someone. Filling out a response form on the website got a response 60 days later.
Nelnet does not have the option to setup an auto-pay for an amount other than what they specify. The 'auto-debit' option only lets you set it up to pay the current amount due. So if you want to pay more than the minimum you have to go in each time you want to schedule a single payment. If you did make a manual payment it then skips the auto-debit for that month. You are also not able to schedule payments further out than a month or so.
You can setup bill pay through your bank but it is difficult to find the correct information to send the payments to. Some of these issues could be resolved with help, but support is so hard to get a hold of it actually feels intentional. It is too bad you don't get a say in whether a negligent, useless company wants to buy your debt.

This company should be looked into for fraud. I've been trying to get off of the income based repayment plan with them for about a year now. I've paid my bill to current then they put in a "request" for a different standard plan...after waiting hours on the phone. Month later I'm still in the income based repayment plan because they filed a request for a new plan but failed to file a request to exit the IBR plan. Now I'll have to pay for another month of their mistake and wait to see if they did their job for next month...after waiting hours on the phone. Hopfully i dont have a magical third form to be processed. Dana, Brandi and Mark say so.. If they really work there. Customer service is zero.

I wish there were the option to give Nelnet zero stars. I am not a complaining customer looking to be moved or transferred into any different plan. I am simply trying to pay my student loans aggressively. I have now submitted three payments, and as I log into my account, payments have yet to be posted. I can tell Nelnet that I have waited on the phone for well over two hours to speak with someone about my issue of trying to repay them money. This is insane and an awful, unorganized, and understaffed organization. I will either open a lawsuit against them because I have confirmed payment confirmation emails from them for the previous three payments that have not been posted to my account, and unfortunately, now I have even higher loans due to incurred interest, or I will be consolidating my loans with another loan servicer. This is a terrible company, and, with a 1-star review on the Better Business Bureau, they do not care. This is a nightmare and an awful company underserving people who have money to pay.

My student loan was originally under US DEPT. OF EDUCATION/GL, without my consent or approval it got switched over to NelNet on March 1st, 2023. Under the previous provider my loan was listed as 1 item in my credit report. This provider listed each semesters money as a separate loan so my report lists it as 4 separate loans and my credit score dropped by 25-27 points and my credit score still hasn't recovered! As if that wasn't bad enough, the payment options on the website are absolute garbage. With my old provider, I had immense control over my automatic payments and the amount I wanted taken out. With this provider, they set the automatic payment amount. If I want to change that amount, I have to get them on the phone. When I called to speak with a representative, I was on hold for 20+ minutes and finally hung up. Tried another time, again an excessively long wait time. I've resorted to making 1-time payments but even then, those have restrictions. I can't make a onetime payment more than 3.5 weeks out. I tried to submit a one-time payment last weekend and again just now but it will NOT process my payment and a pop up appears saying the website is having technical difficulties. I would not recommend this provider to anyone or voluntarily use them again.

Nelnet doesn't even deserve one star. I moved last year and opened a new credit union account and was in the process of clearing out my account at a credit union where I used to live. I went on the Nelnet website and entered my new information and removed the old credit union account. I can log into my account on Nelnet and there is no sign of my old account there, yet I got an overdraft notice from them because Nelnet took my payment from that old account anyway. They are wholly incompetent and useless. Now I just tried four times to make a timely payment, and I keep getting an error message. I'm seriously considering transferring my entire balance to credit cards and paying it off that way so these idiots don't damage my credit score.

The company prevents you from setting up automatic payments on school loans until the interest starts to kick in. I even contacted the company to make sure this was the case as I couldn't believe that someone would do this. This obviously makes it harder for people to pay off loans. By preventing people from making payments early, they also increase the amount someone must pay as making early payments before interest begins is a huge way to lower overall school debt. Shady practice that takes advantage of their customers, and this is the ONLY place I have seen that does not allow automatic payments on loans / debt. The fact that I did not consent to them taking over my loan from Great Lakes, who did allow automatic payments, makes it all the more irritating.

Whats worse is they even have a method to set up scheduled payments, but you can only do so up to a month in advance. I feel like this shouldn't be legal.
