They don't respond to emails. They do not allow customers to set up auto debit until the debt is due. They do allow early payments, or at least will not take the money out of your account and will fail to provide notice, or a reason.

Student loan forgiveness ending, I got mail from NELNET, Student Loan Service Provider, that my loans are due, & I need to start repayment, & in June I received that mail. I told them I was still in classes that I registered for in May 2023, & they might go back a couple of years to verify my attendance, as a continuing student. In 2019, Covid hit, I legally changed my name from Stephen Kadle to Stephanie Kadle. I gave them copies of the legal documents. I got notice a few weeks later stating they could not find the colleges I attended, Sacramento City, Cosumnes River, and American River Colleges. I stated they were under the Los Rios Community College umbrella, but I was denied. I sent them my attendance at the beginning of August. They sent a note that they would review my paperwork in the next 10-20 business days, but I still owe over $5K NOW, while they are investigating. They claim since I was attending multiple colleges, they don't consider it half time. I spoke to a financial aid officer at American River College & they said it should be ok. The start of 2023, I was recovering from major surgery & infection, that put my life on the line. NelNet claims that they will NOT go back & honor the doctor note. I thought if you are disabled, you can ask for a deferment, which they claim I don’t qualify for. I was off work for approx 90 days on disability, I was on opioids for pain, & in class, & had professor that was willing to work with me. I took 3.5 units from the original 6 paid for units, before the court made their decision. Manager at Nelnet berated me, called me names & a liar, and I said that I should have put a photo of me in the hospital in an obituary & talk about their attitude towards students. I said that maybe during surgery I should have died because of the way they are treating me. They called the police to do a welfare check on me, NelNet took my analogy too far, & put my life at risk. I am back to work & will attend class beginning Fall 2023.

They are falsely reporting information on my credit report. They're saying I owe them $41,000 and I don't. It is affecting my credit.

They charged me an extra over $3500 on my account. I tried to call them and they were unresponsive and inattentive. It is quite obvious that my school refunded the money and NelNet was just not aware enough to do their part. They are incredibly disorganized which is the last thing that you need when you're dealing with great sums of money. I no longer trust them at all and I highly recommend that you do not trust them either!

Nelnet took 6 months to discharge the loan of my deceased son and now I was told it will take
about one month to receive a refund of my overpayment on full payment of balance of my wife's account. On the website, they said to call them to verify the refund. After over 45 minutes on hold,I was told there was no reason to call them, but the refund would take a month to process.

I have been trying to set up my repayment account for when the CARES Act ends and haven’t received any response. Nelnet recently acquired my loans from Great Lakes. I emailed the help desk and they only said that a rep would contact me in the order it was received (that email was sent June 6, it’s been over a month). Great Lakes customer service said that I should be able to use my exact information from them to create my account with nelnet - which was confirmed to said call with Great Lakes; but nelnet voicebot says that information is incorrect. I’m trying to be proactive about this but nelnet is impossible to get a hold of or get past the information input. I’m starting to get really concerned.

My loan recently transferred from GL to Nelnet, I registered my account with them after the transition window opens, then made one payment on June 9. Here I'm writing this review on July 7 and such payment has not been recorded to my loan account. After 3 phone calls with agents and 2 emails exchanged about the transaction, including all proof of payment and confirmation from Nelnet and my bank, the amount has not been recorded.
I wonder why DoE transfer our loan to this servicer which they appears to have a very bad service review. Do we have choice to change to other servicer that more competence and reliable?
In between, I need to rate star and it is not allowed to leave 0 star, but they definitely deserved it.

My first contact with nelnet representative wasn’t good. Representative was condescending and rude. Not very helpful at all. Not sure why my loan was transferred to them and hopefully I don’t have issues like I’ve read in some other reviews.

My student loan got transtered to Nelnet, I created my account and was shocked by how poor the security on the website it. For a company that is storing a lot of user information including banking information and socials, they are not serious about security. Firstly passwords can have a max of 15 characters and they DO NOT offer two factor authentication. Weak password and lack of authentication will make it more likely for users accounts to be compromized

My loans were transferred from Great Lakes in May 2023. Ever since I’ve been with Nelnet I’ve been given misinformation and had to complete new applications 4 DIFFERENT TIMES. Advisors are inconsistent with advice and don’t care about the delays. They continue to quote “policy” yet it’s not the same.
      Highly Frustrated & Highly Unsatisfied
