1 starCase #: *********** I wanted to raise a concern over Roto Rooter practices of taking advantage of the clients by concealing and then inflating water remediation bill out of proportions. We had a misfortune of clogged sewer pipes and enlisted help of Roto Rooters. We were quoted $15000 for the overall job that included $9000 for pipe repairs and the rest for water restoration in basement. However, Roto Rooter representatives multiple times, and over and over repeated that all water restoration will be covered by insurance. Assuring us with all confidence that $9000 is all we will have to pay out of pocket. Once work in the basement was completed, we received a bill for $13,000+ in addition to the $9000 that was paid the first day. The work that was done in a 200sq basement included removal of laminate flooring and 2 panel walls, spraying walls with herbal solution, couple of fans and a dehumidifier. All the external contractors whom we contacted afterwards did not quote anything more than $3,000 for the same work. My insurance company generously sent a check to Roto Rooters in the amount of $7800 to cover the cost of the water restoration. However now, Roto Rooters are billing us for the remainder of the amount and threatening to place a lean on the house if we do not. The negotiation that Roto Rooters proposed, took less than $1K off the bill. Speaking with the Insurance company, Roto Rooters also failed to justify all the charges. Roto Rooters prolonged negotiation with the insurance and did not present required documents in a timely manner before the claim was closed. Insurance has reached out to Roto Rooters in December to request justification for the inflated bill, which Roto Rooters did not provide. Now that the claim is closed, Roto Rooters are saying there is nothing else they can do and that remainder of the bill is payable by us. The practice of misleading customer, inflating the bill, and concealing the final amount is as close to fraud as it can get.Review fromP. W.

Took advantage of our situation and they did unnecessary work. I have used Roto Rooter in the past, so I called Roto Rooter to install a new tub drain seal. We had been having some issues with water leaking under our bathroom floor. We had our building maintenance come out and he did not see any evidence that the water was coming from the tub pipes, everything was dry. He suggested we get the drain seal replaced; it had some corrosion. So, we called Roto Rooter. I told the scheduler our situation, with the water leak and the tub drain. The tech came out and brought a mitigation guy with him. My husband let them know that we thought the leak may be coming from the sprinkler head. The Roto Rooter mitigation guy ran his scan tool on the wall and said he did not detect any water leaking from inside the wall underneath the sprinkler head. The plumber insisted it could be coming from underneath in the middle of the tub. He proceeded to cut pipes, and replaced the overflow and the * trap which was in our underground garage. There was no evidence any of it was leaking in any of these areas. He completed the work in 3 1/2 hours. The sheet showed $2485.00 but no breakdown of charges. I reached out and asked for an itemized statement. The parts that he replaced that did not need replacing cost $85.00 and he charged $2400.00 for labor. During the time the plumber was there, we had a mitigation team come in and they found the leak, it was coming from the sprinkler head. The plumber overheard our conversation. After handing me the bill, all he had to say was (it would have leaked eventually). I spoke to the manager of the local Roto Rooter branch. He just kept telling me, we charge by the job not the hour. He said, if it would have taken 8 hours, we would not be having this conversation. That is how they get you; they won't tell you how long it is going to take. And the best part is, my tub was not leaking!Roto-Rooter

**** *********** *** **** **** ****** ** *****. I spoke to Rob S*** on 2-6, he said the best he could do was give me $250. He credited back to my card. I am still very dissatisfied with the result of our conversation, the quote was $1900 to $2500. My point was the labor charge, for only 3 1/2 hrs of work. My complaint has nothing to do with the workmanship or the plumber professionalism. I told Rob, not even the surgeon that saved my life from lung cancer made $600 an hour. I have used roto rooter in the past and felt they could be trusted to not overcharge. Not anymore.Review fromJohn P

What is the point of them sending a camera down the drain line if they can't see a whole over the size of a quarter??? We were being precautious and asked them to snake the drain line from our washer because we had a backup after a freeze. They also sent a camera down the line and left saying everything was fine. The technician, Curtis, who did the snaking said he was relieved that the camera didn't see any issues because he thought he had gotten caught up on something. Well - He did! The next day I did some laundry to find water all over the floor! I cut into the drywall and found a hole over the size of a quarter! It was suspiciously similar in size the the head of the tool they used to snake the drain. There was also spray of brown splashes all over the walls behind my washer - they had made no effort to clean up after themselves. I called back for them to repair it and I was literally in shock when the plumber who came told me it was not going to be covered under warranty. Apparently, there is a "hold harmless" clause on the back of the paper work. I spoke with a manager named Joseph who was incredibly condescending and even sounded a bit sexist. So, I had to pay a couple hundred more dollars to get the issue fixed. Don't call them! They create problems and don't stand behind their work!Roto-Rooter

1 starFirst & last time I use roto rooter. I was charged 408$ for lies & plumber that doesn't know his job. I told him , there was a hot water leak. I even told him where it was coming from. He said it would cost 2400$ to bust the slab in order to fix it. He offered to turn off my hot water until I get it fix & use the cold. Anyways, he cut the pipe to my hot water heater. Because the valve wouldn't shut off.. I agreed to that, I had a diffferent plumber r over . All he had to do was cap off the spare bathroom . That's what I told the guy from roto rooter. It took the second plumber to, fix Anthony's work to, my hot water heater longer. Than capping off the pipes that busted. Plus, it took me 3 days to get someone out. And, I was charged a weekend fee. It fell on a Saturday even though I called & kept waiting on someone since the middle of the week. Talk about frustrating. Everyday I was told a plumber was coming. That's why I didn't call for a different company.Review fromChristopher M

Roto-Rooter completed work at my home that was unnecessary and now I can not get my money back and they will not return any of my calls at this point. Roto Rooter was called out to unclog my cleanout in the front of my house, in the laundry room and in the kitchen. The tecnician unclogged the cleanout in the front and in the kitchen, but he couldn't figure out why the laundry room cleanout was still clogged. The technician recommended replacing the 2 way tee that was connecting the laundry room piping to the kitchen drain line, assuming that a clog existed within the tee. The technician came back 5 days later to replace the tee. When the technician openned the wall behind my washer and completed the replacement of the 2-way tee, the water was still not draining out. At this time the technician became very apologetic and said that he thought that his recommendation would resolve the issue but it didn't. I immediately asked the techniccian for my money back and the technician went to his van to call a supervisor. The supervisor said that he'd come out to my home with his camera to look down the pipe and to resolve the issue. The supervisor came to my house, with a different technician, and they made an assessment. The technician removed the new tee, ran a snake and was able to clear the line. Now, I have a hole in my wall that needs to be replaced and Roto Rooter will not refund me for unnecessary services. I contend that if the 1st technician had ran a snake, like the 2nd technician, in my laundry room that was longer than 20 feet that the line would have been cleared and I would not have needed a 2-way tee replacement. Roto-rooter will not return any phone calls and I am just fed up with their poor customer **********************.Roto-Rooter

1 starRequested a plumber to fix/replace a water pipe going into my house (which bursted during the latest TX freeze). On the bright side, they were very responsive and lined up a technician within 4 hours. Now to the ugly: first they will charge you a $99 fee for the visit, despite me sending pictures of the issue which was pretty straightforward. Second, when the technician showed up, after looking at the cracked pipe section for no more than 30 seconds (which tells you how easy it was to diagnose), he claimed the job would cost me $1,200! Just ridiculous. When I protested, he went on to ** me about having to wait for the PVC pipe to dry out, etc. Again, they will simply assume you are completely ignorant and overcharge. Come to think of it, they leverage the fact you already invested $99 to try and get even more money out of you. As mad as I was having to pay $99 and send the technician away, I did it and called another company (*************************). It took them a day to come over but in the end the job (labor and parts) cost me $498. Roto-Rooter tried to overcharge me by 2.5 times!! I thought about giving RR a two star review just because of their responsiveness but the way they will try and take advantage of you and the situation is inexcusable.Review fromDana K

1 starThe cost for Roto rotor to clear a drain is $650 at minimum. When you call to make an appointment they will not give you any sort of estimate. $650 is more than double the going rate but there you are with somebody in your house and drain that isn’t clear and not a lot of options. I called to complain and the customer service rep was rude and told me that was the going rate and not giving estimates has been their policy for 80 years. I should’ve done my homework.Review fromVictoria W

I think Rotor-Rooter is a rip off. I was charged $580 to clear a bathroom pipe that took 5 minutes to complete. Prior to the technician coming I was told they could not give me a price for the cost. I asked them to give me an approximate price to clear the pipe. They could not tell me. I found an $80 coupon on line. I have seen other clean outs for $99 on line, so I figured it couldn't be more than that price. I was shocked to find out it was going to cost me $500 with the $80 coupon. Doctors and lawyers with years of. college, do not get this amount of money for five minutes of work. I had the job done and contacted the manager from ** who handled the territory. He finally called me back and said this is the way we do business. He said if we told you our price on the phone, you would not hire us. That is correct, I would have gotten a plumber, who would charge $99.00 to do the job. I have asked for a refund of $400 but was refused. This is not an ethical way to do business. I see why you have a 1.9/5 review. This is highway robbery. ********************Roto-Rooter

We recently experienced SEVERE price gouging with Roto Rooter located at **** ** **** St in Jacksonville, FL on December 21. We had a break in our water line and we were charged $2580.00. It took the serviceman only about 2 hours to dig up the dirt and replace the break in the line. There is NO reason that this should have cost nearly this much especially when we received callbacks from other companies after the contract had been signed with Roto-Rooter and were told that their estimate was closer to $700. One of our neighbours who had experienced the same issue confirmed to us that they had paid less than $700 to resolve the issue. Worse yet, only hours later after the water line repair was done, water flow into our home was nominal, at best, and we had to call several times and escalate the issue to management to get them to send a serviceman the next day to restore the water flow. This is not acceptable to take advantage of people during a time of stress, no less during the holiday season. I truly expect a reimbursement of the difference between $700 and the exorbitant $2580 that we were charged. If I could give them 0 stars, I would.Roto-Rooter
