This company relentlessly bombards you with ads to up sell you up on additional services every time you log into your account to pay your gas bill.
They roped my dementia-ridden mother into buying a type of insurance called "Home Service." When I looked at our records, it started at $5 and the price creeped up to nearly $10 by the time I took over the account. When I took over the account, I decided I wanted to cancel enrollment into this "Home Service" insurance. When I was passed to - what I assume is -the retention department, I was told I didn't have permission to cancel the policy. I needed legal paperwork and they didn't accept a death certificate. Let me restate - CenterPoint Energy and their "Home Service" Insurance was a policy they sold to a parent with dementia. And upon her passing, I was told I had no rights to cancel the policy unless I provided difficult-to-obtain legal paperwork that would require lawyers. The Home Service retention agent I was speaking to claimed her name is Emma Smith.
Ultimately, I decided the easiest option was to close down the family's gas account completely, even if we went without hot water for a period of time and start a new one strictly under my name, free of any of these policy attachments. I expected I would need to pay a "start service" fee, which I did pay right away. $80 (plus one other additional charge of $40 I was told to expect) to start a new account under my name, all because of these impossible-to-cancel & questionable add-on services. This was a complete lack of customer care on behalf of both CenterPoint Energy and whatever this "Home Service" thing is. I don't know if those services are actually a part of CPE or a separate entity completely that collaborates with them.
I did not need to pay $80+, but I did, because this company would otherwise keep my family on the hook for an insurance policy sold to a dementia-ridden family member that passed away years ago. I don't know how any of this is legal.CenterPoint Energy, LLC

Thank you for allowing us to address your concerns. A script is read before a customer is enrolled in any add-on services. The customer must then provide authorization for enrollment. In addition, terms and conditions are mailed to the customer for review. Agents of CenterPoint Energy are not privy to a customer's health status and were unaware that the customer suffered with dementia. As a one-time courtesy, we have agreed to waive the $80 security deposit for the inconvenience associated with the HomeServe issue. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.

1 starThey have the worst employees/technicians on the planet. They came 5 different times because each single one would tell me something different that was wrong and why they couldn’t turn on our gas. The first one should’ve pointed out all of them. But it took 5 different people. Then I called to make sure they were coming today and I got told yes by two different call center employees I call the 3rd time because it’s close to 4 which is the time they stop coming and then I get told that it’s not scheduled until Monday. So another weekend without gas!! I’ve gone 2 weeks without gas/hot water and I have a 8 month on baby. This is absolutely ridiculous and I will be calling the federal business bureau on them.Review fromLindsey s

Im looking quickly to change my services from Center Point and Highly Advise any potential customer to derail this Company (Center Point Energy) I have never had any problems when named ******** once the ownership changed, they are money hungry and seemed to have brainwashed their employees, maybe with threats or incentives. My current bill has a disconnect date of May 27, 2023. They disconnected me on May 18th and charging an additional reconnect fee and deposit. Why am I paying the additional fee’s. This is the corruption in our world and we are all subject to erroneous charges because we rely on gas usage to live. This is in no way to run a business and keep customers.CenterPoint Energy, LLC

We appreciate you contacting us regarding your concerns. In review of the account, there were a few disconnection notices that generated with no payment made. On the disconnect bills under "Important Information", it does advise "Your natural gas service is subject to disconnection at any time for non-payment of your previous past due balance as stated on your last bill and disconnection notice." Since there were previous disconnection notices with no payments, the account was subject to disconnection at anytime. 1 starCenterpoint's most recent offense is their all-out effort to sell natural gas leak insurance for your home. First, they sell you the gas, bragging how great it is, then (after warning you, “If you smell gas in your home, leave immediately”) they sell you the insurance.

We used them for our home in The Woodlands. When we moved and canceled services, they said we owed $1040 as a final bill due to a budget or deferred billing plan. When I called to inquire on the bill, I had to call 4 different times, one of which I was hung up on, only to find out that they are not able to provide proof of that election enrollment. Who elects this type of plan and how is that a budget plan when that amount could bankrupt half the country. We will never use them again. Rod was the most pleasant and competent Customer Service Rep I've had the pleasure of talking to in a very long time. When I asked a question, he explained in a courteous manner, and having a good sense of humor made the experience even better.

I have sold a property where we had CenterPoint. They are continuing to charge me for services after the sale date.
I have told them about this multiple times, but they continue to push the responsibility back on me to get the new owner to register. I don't have any authority there nor am I interested in working as their salesperson.

This entire company is staffed by morons!! A couple of years ago they disconnected my gas service a couple days before a massive snow storm despite 10 the fact i had NO outstanding balance and the bill was not due for several more days, and 2) it was legally too cold for them to disconnect service to begin with regardless of status. The company forced us to pay early along with a reconnection fee when yes, it was confirmed the bill still had several days until it was due!! We were waiting for the next paycheck which would arrive in plenty of time to pay the bill, but then had to choose between eating and getting gas reconnected right before a snow storm due to their mistake. Even the supervisors we spoke to made us pay a reconnect fee to get the gas turned on and we had to go an entire day without heat and stay at a family members house to not freeze in our home because even after paying they took nearly a full day to reconnect. Fast forward a year later and they randomly started sending my father's bill (who owns our house but lives at a different address, to our home). Despite multiple calls to get his bill sent to his home, a year and a half after the fact the stupid company cannot figure it out and just "change" the address to send his bill to the correct place... Multiple calls and representatives later. On top of that I receive nonstop calls each month threatening disconnection if I don't pay when the bill is not even due!! When I go to pay, the automated system decides somehow to work up until I need to submit payment, every check payment is lost, and they can no longer locate our online profile?!? Makes paying the bills a hassle every month. Most phone representatives are clueless. Makes me hope someone better buys this company out or that I move where Centerpoint doesn't exist. They are all idiots who cant do anything right. Something needs to be done about this... Nothing but problems!!CenterPoint Energy, LLC
