I signed up for Stamps.com, apparently years ago. I have not once used the service because I'm not really sure what it was really offering. In fact, I don't remember any sort of notification that the charges began, and upon logging into my account, it does not state ANYWHERE the charges that have been made. Typically you can log into your account on a website providing a service, and see a portal of the charges that have been made with dates. There is no information, so it's really difficult for me to see how long this has been going on. I had my husband log into his credit card account and he said it looks like they have been charging us for years, and it is hundreds of dollars. The only reason I realized this was an issue is because they suddenly started sending out emails notifying of the monthly charge. In fact, when you sign up for the account, it is only down on about the 3rd page or so that it says anything about the $15 charge. This is very misleading and I have read many website talking about this scam. It's horrible that this is allowed to happen for a service that does not provide anything worth $15. I feel sorry for the rest of the folks that have been scammed by this service and continue to.

    Dear ****,
Thank you for your inquiry. In addition, immediately after sign-up, new customers are sent a Welcome Email with the same terms outlined, along with information about the monthly flat rate fee if you choose to continue past the trial month.
The fee we charge gives you access to services of the *********** and the license to print official U.S. postage. Its a flat fee that is not determined by how much postage you print.  Stamps.com is a vendor licensed by the ***** and all paid postage goes directly to the ***********. In order to offer our standard service, we do charge a monthly subscription fee.

We never charge people without their full agreement and awareness during our online registration process.  Our service fee is not based on usage or activity.  The monthly subscription service fee that Stamps.com charges is for access of the Stamps.com software, which allows customers to print postage from the comfort of their home or small office using just a PC and a printer.  Our service is a monthly subscription service so its not based on usage of the software, but rather on having access to using it.

During registration for a Stamps.com account, we explain that your credit card will not be charged unless you continue past the four-week trial or buy additional postage and Online Store products.  We believe the monthly fee provides a good value for customers who need to print not only just Priority and Priority Express Mail shipping labels, but also Shipping Labels for other classes (we support ****************** Mail, and Parcel Select Labels), NetStamps, and postage printed directly on envelopes.  We do have a wide variety of customers over a million customers- who enjoy the experience of not having to rely on expensive postage meters and who require more functionality and features than what other PC ******* services currently offer.

On our main page at www.stamps.com, we explain our fees under the section "Here's how it works..."  During the registration process we do make sure that our customers are aware of the monthly service fee in that we have it detailed on the webpage titled Why do you need my credit card information?

We do this so that customers can see the price before they complete the registration process. We also have the billing policy detailed in our Terms and Conditions at:

I am rejecting this response because:

This is unacceptable. If my account was active for 20 months and I was being charged all that time completely unaware, the math doesnt add up. At between $15.99 and $17.99 (Im really not sure what I was being charged, and when), that makes at least $319. A refund of less than half, at the $15.99 amount is not acceptable.

    Sincerely,

My complaint is the same as many others about Stamps.com. Namely their "silent subscription" is an extremely deceptive business practice. I bought a few stamps from stamps.com and unbeknowst to me, I was signed up for a subscription which has charged my credit card $19.81 per month for at least the past 2 years. I only checked and realized what was happening when I received an email notification that the subscription price was changing. I hadn't even been aware that I had a subscription. Prior to that there was NO communication--Stamps.com has NEVER sent me an email receipt confirming payment each month, which is the norm with other monthly subscriptions. I called them a couple days ago to cancel my account but to also complain about being charged. The person on the line acknowledged that I had NEVER used the service. They offered me a paltry refund of $107.94 stating that "normally because its a subscription we don't give refunds." I see on the complaints others have received greater refunds. I should be refunded $367.50, which is the past 2 years ($19.81 x 24 months) minus the $107.94. See attached credit card statement.

My prepaid postage and return shipping costs have not been returned I was Charged $25.00 for Postage and I paid $35.00 to return the entire package with the postage. Stamps.com misrepresented their service and stated that I could ship packages and recieve discounts on *** shipping, however both the scale and service did not support it. Their ads do not state there is a monthly charge above postage for their service. I never used anything after I realized it was a scam

    Business Response

    Date: 03/20/2023

    Dear ******,
Thank you for sharing your perspective.  We apologize for any misunderstanding regarding our services.  Purchasing postage is separate from the monthly service fees.  While the monthly service fee does provide unlimited access to your Stamps.com account, it does not add postage funds to your account.
Rest assured that any remaining purchased postage on the account will be issued in the form of a check.  Please allow 6-8 weeks for processing and delivery.  In regard to store returns, the shipping costs associated with the return are not refunded, in accordance with the Store Returns Policy.  We apologize for any misunderstanding.
Rest assured that Stamps.com supports shipping packages and many other shipping and mailing types.  Stamps.com gives you access to pre-negotiated discounts off *** 2nd Day Air and *** Ground Daily Rates services.  We apologize for the experience and appreciate your feedback.  We sincerely believe in the value of our product, and it offers considerable value to customers who need to print not only just Priority and Priority Express Mail shipping labels, but also Shipping Labels for other classes (we support ****************** Mail, and Parcel Select Labels), NetStamps, and postage printed directly on envelopes.  We do have a wide variety of customers - over a million customers- who enjoy the experience of not having to rely on expensive postage meters and who require more functionality and features than what other PC ******* services currently offer.

I originally looked into Stamps.com for stamps for my wedding stationary. I never ended up using any of their services. Stamps.com accounts cannot be created without customers indicating that theyve read the terms and conditions. During registration for a Stamps.com account, we explain that your credit card will not be charged unless you continue past the four-week trial or buy additional postage and Online Store products.

We believe in full disclosure, and information about our fees is available on our website, interface, Terms, and FAQs.

We also have the billing policy detailed in our Terms and Conditions at:

    www.stamps.com/conditions

Customers are required to review and agree to these Terms prior to completing registration.
In addition, potential customers can review and compare our pricing plans, as well as other important information, to determine which plan best meets their mailing needs via the Learn More section which is accessible from the Stamps.com home page.  We offer FAQs that answer questions about pricing, plans, and specific and general benefits of using Stamps.com:

Dear BBB Team, in 2020 I needed to mail a letter and explored if the US *********** had a service to purchase a single stamp online because during COVID I did not want to go to the post office. I came across stamp.com which had the **** logo on the website and appeared to be associated with the US *************** On June 26th, 2020 I registered on the web site assuming that there would be no charge until I purchased something. I received a welcome email that stated that I could start the service by clicking on the red button in the email. I never clicked the red button and never bought anything from the stamps.com web site during the past 2 1/2 years. I also never received any emails about my credit card being charged. I feel misled that my credit card was charged $17.99 per month for 31 months (a total of $557.69) for absolutely nothing. On February 17th, 2023 I noticed the charges on my credit card and called the 800 number to cancel. I received a confirmation of my cancellation the next day. I asked about a refund but the customer representative explained to me that was not possible. In total I payed $557.69 but received absolutely no service and no product in return. I am devastated.I believe that it is deliberate of stamps.com not to send email notifications when the credit card gets charged in the hope that customers will not notice. I also believe that the **** logo is intentionally used on the website to create the impression their service is an extension of the US ***********, i.e. a legitimate service. Putting a red button in the welcome email to start the service is misleading since monthly charges were placed without clicking that start button and without having ordered a single item through their website. Finally, putting verbiage about the $17.99 monthly service charge in fine print at the end of the welcome email is designed to hide the charges from the customers. Please have stamps.com return my money.Thank you.

    Better Business Bureau:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID ********, and find that this resolution is satisfactory to me.

I am delighted with ******************** prompt and courteous response. The refund amount indeed shows up in my credit card account list of pending transactions. As **************** states, a welcome letter was sent to me on 7/11/21. I just retrieved it. It was certainly never my intention to extend the trial subscription indefinitely at a monthly charge of $18. I don't recall even giving Stamps.com my credit card information. I think my non-intention is borne out by my never once having availed myself of the program's benefits. I have been paying for stamps and package postage at my local post offices all this time. I do appreciate the business's immediate refund, and I hope other consumers did not unwittingly allow their trial subscriptions to become permanent. Other companies regularly remind subscribers of ongoing subscriptions and usage. Perhaps Stamps.com should be doing so as well, to forestall future complaints.

    Sincerely,

    *****************************

At some point I must have signed up for a free trial for stamps.com, but I have never used their services. Apparently, I did not read the fine print that my account would continue to be charged $17.99 beyond some sort of trial period. I never received notification that the trial period had expired and that I would start to be charged. An honest subscription service will actually provide some sort of receipt or invoice when they make these charges. The fact that stamps.com does not inform people they are charging their card is irresponsible and a borderline scam. I can see from searching online that I am not the only one who fell prey to this trap. Im not even sure how they were still charging me because the card they have on file is long since expired. In fact, in September of 2022 they charged me twice. As much as I feel foolish that I am only noticing this now, shame on stamps.com for using such shady business practices.

I signed up on my iphone. During the sign up process; some of the pages I progressed through werent optimized or displayed well enough for mobile use. But I was able to continue on & complete the registration. It wasnt until after I signed up, that I landed on pages & received user interface notifications that informed me of incompatibility with content being displayed on mobile. Additionally, while attempting to navigate my account, I was notified (after registration) their ******************* interface was not optimized for the Apple/Mac device I was using. After this realization, I simply decided to not fund my account or purchase any postage. Two months later I discover my account had been billed twice for a pro-plan that I wouldve never agreed to- had the registration process not been so bugged with mobile-optimization errors. These ******************************* details were lost to me through an ****** complicated, unoptimized registration process, and I was entirely under a genuine impression that I had to actively fund my account to complete any service. Im seeking a refund for the two months I have been billed. I did not knowingly subscribe to any pro-plan.

    Unpursuable:
BBB is unable to locate the business.
I mistakenly signed up for stamps.com subscription but thought I was just getting free package to see if I wanted to try to print stamps from home. I never used it. Did not print one stamp. Did not realize for a year that I was being charged $19.97 per month. I did not get any emails during that period to remind me or alert me to (unused) subscription. When I called to complain they sent me months of account statements while I was on phone - so clearly their emails werent going to junk mail or anything. They just hadnt sent them. They only agreed to refund me $35 of the $225 in aggregate I was charged even though I understand they are able to see from their end I never used the account or logged on. Clearly a mistake. I would like a full refund. I think the lack of communication to remind me of auto renewal is a scam.

    Dear *******,
Thank you for your inquiry. We appreciate and consider your feedback and take our customers concerns very seriously.  Normally, a customer is responsible for all service fees.  However, rest assured that we have issued a courtesy refund totaling $215.49 over 2/15/23, 2/19/23 and 2/20/23.  We show that your account is closed.
We show that a Stamps.com account was fully activated on 3/5/22.  We show that a Welcome Email confirming activation had been sent to you on that day.  We hear your concerns and we always aim to fully disclose our fees before any account can be created.  We do not advertise or offer a free or pay-as-you-go service, and as disclosed and explained during registration, we do charge a monthly fee after the 4-Week Trial Period, which ended on your account on 4/3/22.  We show your account was closed on 2/15/23.
We allow all of our customers to evaluate our features without signing up for an account. We provide extensive FAQs and demos in order to answer any queries that a potential customer may have in regards to the ********************** service and software.  When you visit our website, you have the option of viewing various pages that offer more information and background on our postage printing product.  You do not have to register in order to receive information about Stamps.com.
To create any Stamps.com account, you must complete the multi-step registration process at www.stamps.com.
Registration requires you to enter your name, mailing address, phone number and credit card information, in addition to creating a username and password and selecting two security questions. Also, you must review and agree to our Terms and Conditions:

    www.stamps.com/conditions
To best serve our customers, we provide the terms for Stamps.com accounts during the registration process. Stamps.com accounts cannot be created without customers indicating that theyve read the terms and conditions. During registration for a Stamps.com account, we explain that your credit card will not be charged unless you continue past the four-week trial or buy additional postage and Online Store products.

We believe in full disclosure, and information about our fees is available on our website, interface, Terms, and FAQs.

We also have the billing policy detailed in our Terms and Conditions at:

    www.stamps.com/conditions

Customers are required to review and agree to these Terms prior to completing registration.
In addition, potential customers can review and compare our pricing plans, as well as other important information, to determine which plan best meets their mailing needs via the Learn More section which is accessible from the Stamps.com home page.  We offer FAQs that answer questions about pricing, plans, and specific and general benefits of using Stamps.com:
