I have had the same e-mail address with ************************** - free e-mail for nearly 20 years with no problems. Back in January, 2025 Yahoo, without warning, changed the platform of the e-mail page to one that was hard to read, hard to use, missing icons, cannot print, etc. Then, suddenly Security Alerts began to appear when I attempted to log in. I complained to yahoo, but they would not go back to the original format. On 2/25/25, I was locked out of my e-mail with no way to enter. I called yahoo, com, and told them to fix this and get me logged in with a phone code. They refused and told me that NOW I HAVE TO PAY THEM $12.99 PER MONTH, TO GET MY E-MAIL ACCOUNT BACK. This is extortion. It also resembles A RANSONWARE DEMAND. I refused to be bullied into paying them with a credit card. Now they are HOLDING MY E-MAIL ACCOUNT HOSTAGE, and I have alot of important documents on it that I cannot access. I tried calling them again today, and again was refused help unless I paid the EXTORTION MONEY DEMANDED. Through an online search I have found MANY SIMILAR COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE NEW YAHOO AND ACCOUNTS BEING LOCKED DOWN FROM MANY PEOPLE FILING NEGATIVE REVIEWS. No help from Yahoo. I need my e-mail account # ************************************* fully restored to me. I would like communication from the company and true help. If Yahoo no longer wanted to give free accounts, they should have warned people that they intended to charge and offered us a plan to set up a ****** or other e-mail account and transfer our documents. THEY HAVE NO RIGHT TO CHANGE TO A DEFECTIVE SITE THAT SHOWS NON EXISTENT SECURITY ALERTS AND NO RIGHT TO LOCK DOWN OUR ACCOUNT AND HOLD OUR IMPORTANT INFORMATION HOSTAGE. Please get me a resolution to this problem. Today, I had to open a g-mail account, but I need those documents and important people now cannot e-mail me. I am 75 years old and need the help of the BBB. I live in *********, but Yahoo is based in **********. ************** is my number. Thank you.Business Response

I have a business email address with Yahoo I know the password however they're wanting me to reset because they don't recognize my device for some reason. I can't get the reset code because the phone number on file is no longer valid. I asked if they could please add my new phone number and they will not do anything to help unless I pay them I think this is a very shady business practiceBusiness Response

February 2025 when I noticed interface change with my yahoo email account, don't know how to send an email, no send link- tried many times how to fix something so ridiculous with so-called c.s.-want to charge to get an answer on help page. Even a chat link for help, can't believe it., will re-direct help for a fee. Haven't encountered anything like this scenario with other companies-ready to leave yahoo, have to waste time on beautiful morning with this stuffBusiness Response

Had a phone where I had the Yahoo app and email. That phone is now dead and my phone number has been given to someone else. When I put in my password, I know it's the right password, and it says "oh we still can't log you in, so log in with a device that has been logged in before". Well that's the now dead phone that won't charge and the battery is not removable. When I click that it doesn't solve my issue, the website says I need to contact customer support. So I call customer support and they suddenly want to charge $12.99/month? Since when? I have never had a service ask for payment for account or tech support. I am able to answer all security questions, the number it was tied to, and everything else to prove it's me. Everything was fine until I questioned the paid service. Why would I pay $13 for a month of service that I only need for ten minutes? Suddenly they "can't help me" and "we have no way to verify the account". What do you mean you can't verify the account? I can answer every single question they throw at me to verify the account is mine. This is absolutely ridiculous and I think they know people are migrating to other platforms so they want to strongarm people out of money before they leave Yahoo for good. This really feels like they're saying "Nah, if you want to leave and forward everything to someone else, you gotta pay us first." How shady is that? They're essentially holding peoples' accounts ****** and this needs investigated immediately.Business Response

I am rejecting this response because:I successfully answered any and all security questions and other identifying criteria and Yahoo only backed out when I inquired about them charging to release the info to me. They continue to "move the goalpost" so to speak. They are effectively holding my account ******. I do not trust any of their responses are in good faith and I do not trust them to not misuse further personal information such as my home address, etc, in retaliation for my complaint.
I will continue to pursue the matter in conjunction with my attorney and any further correspondence with Yahoo will be done through their law firm.
Sincerely,
****** MBusiness Response

Complaint: 22989813
I am rejecting this response because:I answered all identifying questions and Yahoo only backed out when I questioned their pay policy (which is ridiculous). Friendly and cordial before that, and DID say I verified the account, but when they brought up payment and I inquired further, they CHANGED and said they couldn't help me and "the system" couldn't verify the account and became a broken record and refused to progress further.
I'm trying to access information for a custody case. Because of said case, I now record all my phone calls. I HAVE the phone call with Yahoo to prove Yahoo's representative said I verified, then their sudden change in answer. The recording has already been forwarded to my attorney and they will be contacting Yahoo to access that information as we need it for the custody case.
Yahoo, I do not appreciate you flat out lying. I answered everything on the phone with your representative correctly and your representative CHANGED THEIR DEMEANOR when I inquired about your paid support policy (which is ridiculous in itself).
Here are the steps of that call:
I was asked for my email; I was asked the name on the email which I answered correctly; I was asked a date of birth which I answered correctly; I was asked my security questions and answered them CORRECTLY; I voluntarily offered my password that your representative verified as CORRECT; I was asked a recovery email that I also answered CORRECT (but that email is no longer in use); your representative CONFIRMED verification of the account and then asked for payment; I asked about it because I had not been aware you were charging - I did NOT say I wasn't going to pay, I was merely asking details on it; your representative then stonewalled me and refused to answer any more questions and refused to proceed unless I paid; when I commented that it was messed up that I just verified everything and was being denied access, your representative CHANGED THEIR ANSWER and all of a sudden said I was NOT verified and they couldn't help me AT ALL even if I did pay (a flat out lie); your representative essentially shut down and became a broken record, repeating their script over and over; THAT was when I said forget paying and hung up; then, in your message to me through BBB, you were asking for even more very sensitive personal info.
In a world of scammers and spammers, you must understand how suspicious this seems on your part.
But, in essence, you are holding my account ****** because you are greedy. There's no two ways about it.
I, personally, am done dealing with you. You will soon be hearing from my attorney and we'll go from there.
Sincerely,
****** MInitial Complaint

Without my knowledge or consent, Yahoo has deleted a Yahoo account I have had and used for over a decade. By reason of "disuse", when I have continually used it for auxiliary services to this day. The Canadian website offers no customer support line or manner of addressing this issue, only eventually leading to a cycle of links which will push you to their "premium customer service" a service which does not exist for Canadians, despite being advertised by the Canadian website.Business Response
