I signed up for an M&T Bank checking account because they were providing the mortgage on a home I purchased in August 2024 and doing my HELOC on a home I sold. I was told that opening a checking account would provide a discount on the mortgage and would not cost a monthly fee. I then purchased the home and was told I would start paying my mortgage in October. I signed into my account several times to set up auto-pay, but never saw the mortgage. I convinced myself that I had the date wrong and confused October and November for the payments to begin because I had no way of seeing or paying the mortgage. On or around October 17th, I received a nasty call from a bill collector informing me that I was past due. Since I had the money and sought out the opportunity to pay my mortgage several times, I gave the bill collector my bank account information and he said that he'd make the payment for me. We obviously discussed the fact that I could not see the mortgage, and he transferred me to an online account person who admitted it was an error on M&T's side as it was never added to my account. In this process, I also learned that I was paying $25 per month for what I thought was a free checking account. The week of November 4-8, I received another nasty call from M&T bill collection stating I was still past due, which should be impossible since I set up auto-pay and even gave them my account info. I explained the situation, and this collector said it must have been a clerical error on the last collector's part. This is now on my credit history, at no fault of my own, and I am disgusted by M&T. I have been charged late fees, and unauthorized checking account fees, spent way too much time trying to have this fixed, and now have credit damage as everyone will always see that I supposedly missed mortgage payments.Business Response

I am writing to file a complaint against M&T Bank regarding their failure to honor a promotional offer for $500. The promotion I participated in required me to make a deposit of over $1,000 within 90 days of opening my account. I used the promo code "UC," which I was instructed to use during account opening, and I was informed in writing that I would receive the $500 bonus once I met the requirements.
I opened my account and made a total of four direct deposits amounting to $9,854 from my employer over the course of the promotional period. Despite meeting the stated requirements, I have not received the promised $500.
After further research, I learned that some individuals have reported that the "UC" promo code is not eligible in my region, but at no point during the account-opening process was this limitation disclosed to me. In fact, I received a letter from M&T Bank explicitly stating that I would receive the $500 bonus once I met the criteria. This misleading information and lack of transparency has caused significant frustration, and I feel I have been treated unfairly as a customer.
I respectfully request that M&T Bank honor the terms of the promotion and issue the $500 bonus as promised. I believe the bank should also provide clarity regarding why I was allowed to use the "UC" promo code if it was not valid for my region.Business Response

I opened the m&t account via promo code TN at a local branch. They comfirmed at the time i was elligble for the promo code TN which is a 350 bonus with a 500+ direct deposit. However i called m&t inquire about the status of the promotion as i completed the direct deposit required they told me im not elligble since i live in PA. Even though the promo code was accepted at the branch during the opening of the account and manager there read the terms and found no issues as long as the direct deposit was completed. What m&t did is not ethical as they are misleading customers and hoping they will forget about the promotion.Business Response

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID ********, and have determined that this does not resolve my complaint.
I have attached the online offer with the terms in the attached PDF. M&T is doing bait and switch if they are leaving out key information on their online offer. They are stealing customer information and forcing customers to open new accounts with intention of never paying the bonus. I have also confirmed this with the local branch as they confirmed this offer is valid after looking at the online offer and read the terms. I will be documenting there interactions in court and this will be going to court if it is not addressed in 1 week.

Inferior customer service. I am a director at a local non-profit childcare center and have had difficulty with this bank. My most recent complaint is needing help to merge all of our business accounts. I have called, left messages, and messaged the online portion of M&T. I have not heard from anyone for a week. I have a meeting with my Board Of Directors next week, and I can't access my statements because of this issue.Customer Answer

I gave my social security number to open an account- they opened said account sent me a card and checks and closed it without telling me any reason why- and posted something against my credit. I didn’t apply for anything only open a checking account.Business Response

While reviewing M&T Bank website for checking account options, I observed an offer for a sign-up bonus upon meeting certain conditions. I completed signup (9/17/2024), including using the advertised promotion code, and met all required conditions as laid out in the clearly defined terms and conditions. After weeks passing without receiving the signup bonus, I contacted M&T bank to determine why. I was told that the promotion was intended for a specific region, despite there being zero mention of that during signup or on the original promotion page.
M&T has since added a zip code eligibility check, but this was not present at the time of sign up (confirmed via website archive snapshot on 9/12/24).
I have attached the archived webpage screenshot showing lack of a zip code check, and no mention of the offer being regional. Adding it after the fact is a clear case of bait and switch. Providing a promotional offer and then later saying it is zip-code specific after the fact.
Requesting the bonus ($500) be added to account as promised by the terms and conditions.Business Response

On 07/24/24 I cancelled my order with ***** for $565.85. The ***** company explained that I had to file a stop payment with M&T Bank to cancel payment since I used an online check form of payment. I called M&T Bank, said they could not stop payment. This resulted in not getting my money back, and two overdraft fees which would not have happened if they put a stop payment. I currently live out of state and I have no idea how to get this money back for a product I never purchased.Business Response

On 11/1/2024 I realized I would not have enough money in my account for the scheduled automatic ACH draft on 11/5/2024 of $2,933.59. I called, but they were unable to cancel the ACH draft 5 days in the future. I asked that since I’m calling to try and prevent a returned payment fee, whether they could waive the fee. They claimed they could not.
This outcome is ridiculous, that I have to pay a fee because they can’t change a scheduled payment 5 days from now.Business Response

Due to being in a coma in the ICU at the hospital, I missed a couple payments on my mortgage. I'm currently behind two months (August, September) the bank is REFUSING to take my payment to bring my mortgage current and starting a foreclosure process. I’m on disability. I have a SSI check that goes into the account every month. I was given a scam check, that I cashed didn’t know it was a scam and had handled it with M&T bank. I have had an account with them for 6 or 7 years maybe a little longer. I had all that taken care of. My account was in working condition, now all of sudden I have no access to my account and no reasoning. I have been hung up on, given no information about why my account is being closed or has restrictions on it. I would like that information. As I get my check in that account for the last 7 years. Randomly putting restrictions and account blocks on my account is redundant. I am disabled and being rudely treated by this bank. The way the bank handles business is by far unprofessional! I will be having everyone I know switch banks and close their accounts and all file complaints against this business. We will take our banking to a different place. A lot of my family, friends, and bosses use this bank. Seeing they can’t treat us with the right respect we will no longer use them. They don’t treat their clients with professionalism by any means. They can’t seem to know why or have answers to any questions about account information.Business Response
